annie Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 but also a lot of local stuff thrown in.Oh right, I forgot about Billie substituting the name of whatever city he's in into the same line Like "From [insert city] to the middle east" in JOS or saying that Jason Freese (or one of those extra guys, I don't remember) is from that city. How very original.

How very original.I was actually talking about mentioning local sports teams, bringing back stories from last being in the city. That sort of thing.
BabsBurnoutGirl Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 I don't mean calling it punk; I mean what constitutes punk.

How very original. The guy was Ronnie Blake XD And to be fair, I went to a few AI gigs and they were all different. No, they weren't as spontaneous as they have been in past years, but it is still a brilliant show to watch

Hermione Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 I think they should do that stuff at every concert Ha ha wouldn't we all love Nah, I don't mean to say their normal concerts are boring- I wouldn't have spent hours watching so many of them if I thought that! It just doesn't bother me that much if they stick to some kind of setlist. They seem to have worked hard over the years to put together and build up their show so that it's as effective and impressive as possible, I think they do it to make sure every show goes well and is enjoyable for the audience
annie Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 I don't mind a setlist, I mind the fact that it seems all of Billie's lines are scripted.
Viva La Junkpile Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 I can't believe I'm going to stick my foot in this dragged-out mess of a topic... because it seems never ending, and I suppose there's a decent enough reason why it's never-ending; punk cannot be truly defined because it is only what you take from it. You know what it embodies, and that is clear within the band members, and in some very non-punk bands. It's the people. It's one thing to play the music (which, to be honest, the bands aren't categorized properly in punk's genre), but it's another thing to BE *punk*. Hell, the "original punks" didn't particularly enjoy being labeled as such, so why put a label on it in the first place? Be yourself, whether it turns out you being you means you're what can be considered "punk" or not. Don't go hunting for things to be... just...be. And that's what Green Day are. So whatever that means is up to you. They are a wonderfully relateable and down-to-earth band. They're AI concerts embodied pure ROCK. And that's just great. They're showmen. Brilliant ones at that.
Hermione Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 I don't mind a setlist, I mind the fact that it seems all of Billie's lines are scripted.Hmm I dunno, I've heard him repeat himself a lot in the past too. When he likes a phrase he sticks with it . I honestly think with the A.I. tour that could be a part of the big spectacular show thing too- when he introduces the band it's like a circus or something, he wants to have grandiose lines to say so he's like the ringmaster. And also some of the things are kind of for sentimental or nostalgic value, so it's like something to share between him and the audience.
Boston Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Very well written and not spoken out of the writer's ass. I really like this piece. Thanks for the post, Andres.Hmm I dunno, I've heard him repeat himself a lot in the past too. When he likes a phrase he sticks with it . The same setlist, scripted lines, etc. I would have killed to see them early on, even 8 years ago promoting Warning.
Trotsky Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 i'm pretty punk has always been bigger than one person.Or one band. People who credit the Ramones for punk especially earn my rage.
Boston Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Or one band. People who credit the Ramones for punk especially earn my rage. You can credit them for mobilizing the punk movement, just like you can credit Green Day for doing the same thing in the '90s.
JunkiexHeart Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 How did Green day mobilize punk in the 90's? 0.oPunk carried on though..
Boston Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 How did Green day mobilize punk in the 90's? 0.oPunk carried on though..They mobilized [a watered down version of pop punk] to become popular.I are does grammar good.
JunkiexHeart Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 That's not mobilizing punk then. That's just being a pop punk band.
Guest Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Green Day are punk... Although i do think they shift between genres.
Hermione Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Very well written and not spoken out of the writer's ass. I really like this piece. Thanks for the post, Andres. The American Idiot tour was so bogus. The same setlist, scripted lines, etc. I would have killed to see them early on, even 8 years ago promoting Warning.Look at some setlists or videos from the Warning tour, or especially the Pop Disaster tour. They had almost the same running order and antics at every show. They only really did extra special stuff at "special" concerts at the time (eg. festivals, smaller venues). The normal shows at big venues were very much planned. Then in the American Idiot tour it was the same- planned in big venues, but at the smaller "special" shows (eg. the Warfield), they did spontaneous stuff. In all their tours it's the same. They played small venues in their early tours and for Nimrod, so spontaneous stuff happened. But during Dookie / Insomniac, Warning, and A.I., they played bigger venues so it wasn't always as easy to be spontaneous. As Billie Joe has said, at a big venue they try to create a spectacle, in a small venue they try to create intimacy.
M1KEY Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Hahaha Not all Billie's lines are scripted...Like in Montreal in 2005, Billie was about midway on the catwalk and fireworks started exploding in the sky from a theme park a few blocks away. He heard the pops and bangs and stopped dead, cocking his head and looking thoroughly confused and hilarious. He walked out to the end of the catwalk and looked out to his left and saw them and he shouted, "what the fuck is that?!?!" Followed by telling the fireworks to "Shut Up!!!"LMAO Close to the best moment of the show, telling fireworks to shut up was just the funniest thing to me.
Hermione Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 ^ That's awesome. I would have loved to see them during any era. Every Green Day show I've ever seen a video of has looked amazing, from every era.
Guest give me novacaine-jos Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Green Day are punk... Although i do think they shift between genres.that's true... well in greece some "crazy" people call green day and especially Billie Joe emo.... that's really annoying
