Green Day Haters / people bashing you for being a Green Day fan?

My parents like Green Day, so at least I don't deal with any "Green Day hating" at home. I don't think they get the extent of my love for Green Day (mostly because I could never express it correctly in words), and even if they did know, I'm sure they wouldn't understand it.

My mom does really bother me when she talks about how I love Green Day. She thinks I just love Billie Joe. Which is true, of course, but that's by far not the only thing about the band that makes me love them. My mom especially can't understand my love for them other than the superficial analysis of why she thinks I like the band: I think Billie Joe is cute. :/ Every once in a while she brings that up, and it's so condescending. She'll talk about her favorite bands and say "Well, of course, I'm not in love with the lead singer like you are" or when I make a comment about how brilliantly I think a Green Day song is written she'll go real sarcastically "Oh, I'm sure you think it's just great." I know I'm 16, but I've grown up around music and appreciate it. I respect the guys deeply as musicians and songwriters. I've always felt that music is a part of me, but my mom simply isn't like that, and doesn't understand people who are.

Grr... that may actually be worse than them bashing Green Day, come to think of it.

Am I embarrassed to tell people I listen to Green Day? Yes. You can thank American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown for that.

Ugh, it's brutal at my school. Whenever I wear a GD shirt, I get bombarded with insults from insensitive pricks. People are SO creative and say "Gay Day" and such. "Emo" was the popular word of choice in 2005. It's so annoying.

I used to get really mad and sometimes go off on them, but now, I'm just like, "Whatever. Go listen to the shit you call music." Seriously. I've got a brain and I enjoy using it, and the music on MTV nowadays (whenever music IS on there) isn't what I would classify as good at all.

I just look at it was it being their loss, and my gain.

My mother doesnt mind atall. She does the annoyed face when i come home with a new green day poster because they take up too much space and its got to the point where im putting my new ones over the old ones. My father was into the sex pistols and the ramones and the clash back in the day so he would be disapointed if i didnt like rock an roll. He gets terribly annoyed when i have the remote and put on the pop chanels, he gets up and walks out of the room. My brother was a BIG green day fan up until American Idiot came out. He says there new stuff is complete shite and refuses to listen to them anymore. Hes been to alot of green day shows an has told me of all the shows hes been to, and there has been hundreds, the green day shows will always be his favourite. I may be a loyal green day fan but that doesnt mean i only listen to rock music. I listen to EVERYTHING but aside from green day, dance music/hip hop would be my favourite. Then my friends are another story. One is a big time fan like me theres another one who likes em but aint too big into them and another who likes the odd song. The rest are always like "oooh green day are shit, why ju like em?" Another thing is nearly EVERYONE knows i like green day. People i know but i dont know that well i just talk to them when im out or if i bump into them just seem to know i like them, i dont know how. Last weekend was really weird. I was down in the pub and the DJ goes "now heres a new one from green day its called 21 guns" and half off the pub just started looking and smiling at me. I honestly dont know how people know i like them.

Wow that was long

I get the "why do you listen to that emo s***?" all the time from my older brother - meh, he's a d*** anyway - he thinks slipknot is the heaviest metal band around so go figure lol

Hah, this is how it went yesterday:

Me: Yeah, I like Green Day. Christie Road is their best.

Shit-break: Green Day sucks. Listen to metal.

Shit-break turns around and talks to Butt-fuck. I listen in to the entire conversation.

Shit-break: Yo, Jeezy, yu heer dat playa on MTV wit dat white stuf?

Butt-fuck: Da 1 wit dah pad wit da bliiiiinngg and the chiiing?

Shit-break: Nah man, da one wit da brains on drugs. Heeee!!!!

Butt-fuck: Heeeee......playa. Ladyagakanyewest50centjizzynigafiddywoo.

After hearing this, it became clear to me that the people that bash Green Day have the IQ of an uncircumsised VAGINA.

LAMO!!!! thank god that i like GD otherwise i wont be able 2 graduate or even talk human...

The thing is though, talking about all of the times you have got stick for being a fan proves that you do care; It has left such a mark on you that you want to slag off what the other person said to you.

If you really didnt care, then you wouldnt bother to voice what has happened to you in the past. The way I see it, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, its just how they voice their opinion which can be of a concern.

but yea... thats just my opinion, dont give them what they want. By talking about the shit they gave you, proves that they have won. People like that are not even worth talking about.

If you like something, you shouldn't be embarrassed to tell people about it. Who cares what they think?

Most people at my school are scared of anything remotely Alternative, and like R&B clones whose songs are only popular for a week before they get 'old'. I've had people come up to me and ask if i'm an 'emogothpunk' LOL. My friends are like 'OH GOD...' if i ever mention Green Day, and a couple of them go on about them being 'the ugliest band ever'. My mum just teases me by calling Billie 'pretty boy'. It's all kinda annoying, but I don't really care, people are just stupid.

oh yeah my girlfriend gives me shit all the time

she thinks im gay now cause i talk about billie too much lol

Haha. How could you be gay when you are with her.

That would be stupid to think.

I used to care but now ive realized people giving me crap about likeing green day are the people listeing to 3oh3 so i usually just luagh at them.

very very true

It seems that if you haven't been a fan since pre- American Idiot you aren't worthy of being a Green Day fan. Therefore I lie and say that Nimrod was the first album I heard.

and thats bull shit cuz some of us didnt get a chance to listen to new music untll we were about thirteen, wich to be honest is when i got into green day and that was last year. but im going to be honest and say i heard dookie first because a friend gave it to me ^^

I get that kinda thing all the time, not just for liking GD but because I love some things that "fell out of fashion" some years ago, for instance I like pokemon and play the games, thus I am known as pokemon freak who gets "PIKACHU" shouted at me wherever i go, or sometimes it's just because I like rock music when I'm "supposed" to like trance and gangsta rap, the least i'l say is that there not my favourite genre's... but It just dosn't bother me, if anything I don't wanna fit in with the sheep and the people who have no real intrest in "popular" things but wanna be in. I just think at least I have a life were I am happy when doing the things I enjoy rather than pretending.

as long as we are willing to be ourselves, why not, hell i still play pokemon from time to time. im with you too, why should we try to reform to be accepted? honestly if people dont like me for me i give em the middle finger and move on.

I get shit all the time. It seems like no-one gives us a chance. Really, no-one else gets given shit for their bands. I get told I'm a guitarist, and guitarists aren't supposed to like Green Day they're supposed to like guitar gods who solo on stage for hours.

Same here, at least there's no real bullies in my school :) Except for the preps, and I can handle those.

I've had people laugh about be being a Green Day fan before, but what they think doesn't really bother me. It's what i think that counts. I just ignore them, because it's usually a reaction that they want.

My Dad likes to take it out on me because i like Green Day and Pokemon, but i just ignore him too, because he likes to try and irritate me.

^I've grown out of that whole Pokemon phase.

Thank God i did.

I'm very loyal to all of the things I consider to be "my favorite". My favorite shows, favorite movies, favorite band - it's not something that changes often if at all. So to the people who tell me that Green Day "isn't popular anymore" or is "an old band" or "not 'in' anymore" - LOL, who gives a crap? It's not my problem if the rest of the world has a shitty attention span. I love what I love and I'll be loyal to the things I love forever. Green Day isn't a fad for me. I don't care if they sold 2 million copies or 2 copies - they're my guys.

I couldn't agree more :D

Since when did people start to lose interest in stuff only because it wasn't "in"?

Posted

^ Many people are shallow and only want to like what's in RIGHT THIS SECOND. Sad but true. And, I mean, it is natural to like the things that are popular because you see it everywhere (see: Twilight ). I'm just not like that.

I can't remember when things weren't like that. Where I live, everything is determined by what's popular/"in". Green Day isn't too popular where I live. Therefore, people think it's cool to mock GD. It's annoying, but what can you do? :/

Or, in simplest terms: because Abercrombie & Fitch said it was only cool to like this or hate that. A&F brainwashes people, but it hasn't worked on me. It's just ruined my life though, i'm alienated at school for not following trends. Abercrombie & Fitch is Hitler with trends. Hollister is Fidel Castro. Aeropostle is Che fucking Guevara.

If Abercrombie and Fitch said it was uncool to breathe, almost everyone in my school would be dead. I'd be standing there on the side, laughing my ass off at the schmucks who jumped on the bandwagon.
