justcause Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 hehe thats one of my secret favorite albums ever. Billie just likes whatever he likes - proper order, too! No music should be put in a taste-ghetto.
justcause Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 my favourite part yeah, people either say Insomniac is their favourite GD album or they don't like it at all. i never heard enybody called it like 3rd fav album or something. i know bigest bullshit i heard and people keep saying about it is that it's just Dookie's follower, continuation, you know. i myself never noticed any similarity between those 2 albums. acctually, there are no two similar GD albums at all and i think it's what i like the most about them You're so right - I don't know how anyone could think that Insomniac was like Dookie unless they'd made their minds up about it before they even heard it. I also agree that every Green Day album is different - no-one saw American Idiot coming, did they? I just think Insomniac was radically different. I was just talking to someone today who considers it to be their worst album - people complain because it's the shortest playing time. It never seems short to me - it's very intense and involving. And it's one of those rare albums that feels different according to the mood you're in when you listen. If you listen to Insomniac when you're in a dark mood, it really speaks to your anger or depression - it's very special.
Guest Immortality Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 XD, I love the Billie clothes part, considering he did it and was so frank about it.
Dannit Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 insomniac is my favorite album, just because of the sound, its not really more raw than dookie, just the attitude of it . . . and the fatter (?) sounds of the guitar and what not . . . i liked dookie for the guys and the songs, but insomniac for the songs, it is adicting, the artwork goes perfectly with it, and i think its awesome
myfuckedup truth Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I've seen people complain about Green Day talking shit about other bands...now I know where that comes from. But I think it's great, heh. At least they've got the balls to be honest. hah. yeah and Billie Joe sure made a point of that! Thanks (thread started) for posting that interview!
Blu Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 The early sound is clean and simple and the songs are really strong, and there's all that eagerness to them. It's also that each of the songs is about one thing, like loneliness or love - or coming clean, and they allow your head the space to just dwell on that. 'Pasalacqua' is such a beautiful song - if you saw them do it on Fuse lately, it stands up just as well today. I love "Going to Pasalacqua." It's my favorite song off 1039 SOSH, and I saw the one from FUSE, I love it. The simple sound is the really nice part. Nothing is complicated. It is really easy going. I was listening to Kerplunk last night and I love how its simplicity is so relaxing. I'm not a huge fan of love songs, but I don't mind the ones on Kerplunk. I like Insomniac for not having any of those kinds of songs. The first four albums they released are great in my opinion. Everything is straight forward and simple, and you can relate to so many of the songs, even if only on the emotional level.
Parley Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 It has to be said that a lot will count on how Green Day maintain their political stance - if it gets to look like a pose, then people will become disillusioned. I agree, but if you've been observing Green Day since the 90's, you see that their political stands have remained quite consistent through the years. I've never seen anything to indicate that they have done any "posing" in this area.

I think that the really big deal about Green DAy is the emotional level, I think Billie Joe really strives for honesty when he's exploring his own feelings - and essentially, nearly every Green DAy song is Billie Joe trying to figure himself, or his relationships, or his destiny, out . So you're always listening to this one, honest voice, and that's what makes it so simple and clean. He can't complicate it , because as he has said, his songs are how he works things out. I think that's why so many people relate so strongly to his lyrics - and you see people quote them all over. That's not even counting the kick-ass music tht goes with it. I've liked - even loved - the music of many bands over the years, but I've never come across anything like Green Day. It's hard to explain to the non-fan, but they're really fucking special.

I've never seen anything to indicate that they have done any "posing" in this area. I don't think for a minute that they're posing, I think they've always kept their integrity, and never cared about other people's opinions of it. What I meant was that they may need to be as visible in their follow-up as they have been in their denouncing of Bush. Though I have to say that Billie JOe waving a crutch above his head during 'Holiday' at the Billboards was a bold and stark message to send, when they could have just enjoyed their own triumph - maybe that was their mission-statement.

I love the driving, punky guitar sound, and Tre Cool plays a fucking blinder too, it's a really tight album musically, lyrically inventive, and I think Billie Joe's vocals are expressive and really moving on songs like 'Stuck With Me'. Awesome is right.
Terrbear Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 Ah! This is from hmm, guitar world! An awesome article, I thought it was great. They were pissed, but they were speaking the truth.
girlaxia Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 i remember reading this! cool to read that again.

Too true. Honesty is something I value more than anything. When you listen to the songs you can tell everything that is being said is honest emotion. It is so hard explaining it to others. It is something you just have to feel. I haven't been a Green Day fan for all that long, but after listening to American Idiot and all the other records over and over, I can honestly say that I've never heard another band that expresses themselves as clearly as Green Day. There's a song for almost every emotion you can have. What Green Day does with their music is so rare. They aren't afraid to put themselves out there and be completely honest. It is one of the things that helps make them so great.

I love Green Day's music all the time, and on different levels - a lot of the time is just rocking out to it, but even then there'll usually be some line that makes me think. But when you're feeling bruised, you hear it in a whole other way - it's got these different dimensions to it. The other thing I found - and I know for sure I'm not alone here - is that when you've been listening to Green Day for a while, you suddenly find you want to live your life a whole other way! Coming from Dookie and 'She', I know all my doubts are someone else's point-of-view - and coming from AI, there must now be millions of people who don't feel any shame and won't apologize! Green DAy empower!
mbk Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 I'm really loving this thread. I almost don't want to butt in. I agree and I won't add anything. (btw, please don't make these huge quote pyramids )

Green DAy empower! I think I know what you mean. You can listen to a song a million times, but every time you can learn something new. One line can make a ton of difference. All of the sudden a specific line will just click and it will make you realize something. I love that the most in American Idiot, but it happens a lot in the other records. A couple months ago I was listening to She and all of the sudden the song just clicked. A vale is lifted and you see the song in a different light. At the same time, you can make a realization that can help you in your daily life. One little line will make everything feel easier to an extent. The first time I heard the song Warning, I realized I'd been taking life too seriously and needed to learn to relax a little. Dookie says similar things to me. I love the way you can identify with almost every song in its own way and it feels applicable to your own life. That's the mark of a true artist, in my opinion.
justcause Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 ^^^^^^^^^^ Hi, Blubazooka - hope you find this! Yeah, I'll bet everyone has a clutch of songs that are special to them for different reasons, and then, as you say, other ones sort of 'reveal themselves' to you at different points, in a 'flash of inspiration' sort of way. Billie Joe is a brilliant songwriter, far more complex and subtle than many people realise - I know a lot don't even read his lyrics - and that's why his songs keep unfolding and unfolding like you said. There is so much going on in American Idiot - layer after layer of images and wordplay, not even taking that big emotional storyline into it. The individual songs are just crammed with stuff. I took my screen name from my favourite line in Holiday - 'just cause because we're outlaws' - I didn't get that line until one day I saw George Bush on tv, and he opened his mouth and those two words, 'just cause' dropped out , describing his attitude to the war in Iraq; but Billie is saying it's only a just cause to us because we're outlaws - flouting the U.N. All that in five words - no wonder Holiday took him two months! I have songs that I love because they have particular associations for me, and other that I love just because they're great - I love FOAD because it just rocks, and the quiet little vocal going 'my belly's aching now to say...say',before the whole thing just explodes in guitars and venom. Haushinka doesn't have anything deep to say -I love it because it's just beautiful.
annie Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 Haha this is a great interview. I love how they'll talk shit about a bunch of other bands rather than kissing their asses. Its great. And I love the part where Billie says "I'm gonna take my fuckin' clothes off and wiggle my little dick at everybody." Thats so fucking funny..

Haushinka doesn't have anything deep to say -I love it because it's just beautiful. I like how you chose your name. I wish I could say something like that about my name, but mine is just a mix of old stuff from my past. I never noticed that line in Holiday too much before, but now that you've said that, that whole section of the song seems more important. I never knew Billie Joe spent two months writing Holiday either. I love Holiday. Every time you hear it, you can see new things in it and it keeps bringing you back. When I think of beautiful songs When I Come Around comes to mind. It is one of the few songs that I don't really look to for lyrics. I was attracted to the sound. The song itself is just tantalizing. The melody is so calming. I can't really explain it. When I hear it I just seem to relax more. Lyrics are something important to me. I take so many things to heart. I go day to day at school with a line of some song driving me all day long. I post a new line in my locker every day. Right now, my favorite line is from J.A.R.: "If you could see inside my head, then you'd start to understand, the things I value in my heart." No one around me seems to understand why I do things I do or act the way I act. This line is a perfect example of that. By the way, FOD is a great song. I love how it starts off really quiet and then gets to the point you mentioned and just bursts out really loud. I like the transition in Christie Road for a similar reason. I like how it changes in the middle. It makes the song more interesting in a way. It kind of makes you pay attention to it.
