Kingunderpants Posted January 5, 2006 Author Posted January 5, 2006 Yeah, you will. It has Stuart and the Ave, which makes for good listening...always! And great cover/inside art.
Lotus Eater Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Yeah, I'm gonna get it. I don't have that or Warning...or Kerplunk. I suck.
Kingunderpants Posted January 5, 2006 Author Posted January 5, 2006 Kerplunk and Warning are 2 must haves of the Green Day collection - moreso than Insomniac. It's the two best albums, in my opinion. Well, they tie with 39/smooth.
Amber Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I like that song 'Glycerine'... SCREW YOU BILLIE JOE! There is no way they would say those kind of things (well, in such harsh ways) today. They seem to care more about how they're comming across and some might say that's a bad thing but I don't think it is... is there a point to this? Well.. there was..
Blu Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 That was the best thing I've read in a while. Thank you for posting that interview. The thing about Insomniac is that for the people who like it, it's kind of compulsive - you just want to play it all the time - I talked to a guy on another site who told me that the first time he heard it as a kid, he had to play it about three times a day for the longest time! I think the idea that it was a pissed-off response was what other people put on it, not where the album came from. I think people had a prejudice towards it, because it wasn't 'Son of Dookie', they went, 'oh yeah, so now you're trying to be hard-ass punks again'. I don't think that was true - I think GD tried to do something brave and different, and nobody got it. I agree it's not to everyone's taste, but it has its serious fanatics! To me, Insomniac wasn't exactly about experimenting. I think it was a way for the guys to get some things off their chests after the chaos of Dookie and the events that came with it. You can kind of hear their frustration and anger with the happenings in their life around that time. I love that album. I don't listen to it often enough, but when I do, it is awesome every time.
J.A.R. Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I liked that interview. It was filled with so much joy.

Well, they tie with 39/smooth. I have 39/Smooth, and while I agree that there are some good songs and you can definitely hear the potential of the band, I can't seem to stretch my mind far enough to understand why some of you pick that as your favorite album. They've progressed leaps and bounds since then. Shoot me, but I think American Idiot is my favorite. The others are great, for sure, and so nostalgiac, but I like my albums as cohesive units. And that AI definitely is. I like that song 'Glycerine'... SCREW YOU BILLIE JOE! I think it's a good song, but I agree about the sound quality of the guitar and vocals. I know they were going for the whole grunge thing, but you don't have to go overboard.
..whatsername.. Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Yeah, I'm gonna get it. I don't have that or Warning...or Kerplunk. I suck. woah that really surprises me. i took you to be a fan that has anything and everything in green day music. you really should get kerplunk asap
Lotus Eater Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 woah that really surprises me. i took you to be a fan that has anything and everything in green day music. you really should get kerplunk asap Yeah yeah, I'll get around to it. I don't own any band's entire catalogue of albums, even my favorite bands. I'm just lazy, I guess.
Kingunderpants Posted January 5, 2006 Author Posted January 5, 2006 I really like 39/Smooth because I really like power pop/pop punk. The guitar style is much like that of Fifteen, which I like a lot, and the vocals are perfect for that kind of music. It's almost like it's a different style of music. I just love it so much.
ArmatageShanks39 Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 wow, they were pretty harsh, lol. oh well. i liked that last little paragraph about punk, its so true.

I will give you that the guitar work on that album is probably better than anything after it. That's one thing I hope BJ will experiment more with on the next album.
Blu Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Yeah yeah, I'll get around to it. I don't own any band's entire catalogue of albums, even my favorite bands. I'm just lazy, I guess. Yeah, definitely get Kerplunk. When I bought Dookie the guy at Tower asked if I had Kerplunk. When I told him no, he told me that I should get it. He also said it was one of their bests. I bought it about two months later. He was right. Kerplunk is pretty good. Gotta love people who work at record stores and actually know what they're talking about.
Lotus Eater Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Pretty good? That doesn't make it sound like one of their best.
Blu Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Pretty good? That doesn't make it sound like one of their best. Depends on your personal taste. I have to be in a weird mood to listen to it. I do love it though.
justcause Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I have 39/Smooth, and while I agree that there are some good songs and you can definitely hear the potential of the band, I can't seem to stretch my mind far enough to understand why some of you pick that as your favorite album. And that AI definitely is Really, you just need to have all of GDs albums, they each have their qualities, and although everyone has their own favourite, there isn't actually a dud in the whole bunch. I know what you mean about 39/Smooth, the production is pretty stark and Billie Joe's vocal is underdeveloped, but the songs are superb and really extraordinary for kids their age - it must have been quite something to see them live. My own favourite, apart from Insomniac, is Nimrod, and I'm surprised no-one has mentioned it, it maybe their finest songwriting on it - 'All the Time', 'Scattered', 'Worry Rock' - the glorious segue between 'Jinx' and 'Hauschinka' - you have to have it! American Idiot, I keep changing my mind about all the time - and also, it's a totally different animal live, isn't it? Billie Joe puts the whole thing across so passionately, he totally takes you with him. Yet I just don't find myself playing the cd as often as the others. Sometimes I think it's because there's so much going on in AI that it would have been better off being expanded and put over 2 cds instead of compressed into one.

I do love Nimrod, though I wouldn't say it's their best songwriting...especially the songs you mention are really pretty simple. They're great melodies, for sure, and I've nothing against a good and simple song, but I just think that the things they pulled off with American Idiot are amazing. But King For a Day will always be one of my favorite of theirs. I guess my taste is for more complex music, relatively speaking, because I grew up on the Beatles. :/ And I'm a sucker for any rock opera. (Tommy ) But as you say, I really should own all the albums. They are each very unique. That's one of the things I love about Green Day, and what sets them apart from a lot of other bands.

I agree totally - you have to take it on its own terms - as if it was a whole other band, which in a way it is - and then it works for you. If you come to it having heard the likes of Dookie first, you'll find it stark and lacking in polish, but it has this great raw quality and great songs. Warning? My least favourite! When I first heard 'Warning' was when I started to think that GD really might split up, as the rumors were, because it's sort of lacking in life or energy, with the exception of the singles. I know other people hold the opposite opinion.
Lotus Eater Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I really like the song Warning, and I LOVE Blood, Sex and Booze...but of the others I've heard, eh.

I'm just lazy, I guess. im pretty lazy with that stuff myself but as soon as i really started getting into green day i just went out and got everything i could..and the rest i got from my one gd obsessed friend. but when you do decide to buy them i would get kerplunk then insomniac then warning

Now, its my favorite album. Theres good variation in the songs and there's just something about it...I get a good feeling whenever I listen to it. I think its quite a masterpiece especially for their age.

That album makes you feel good in some way. I think that's why I have a hard time with it a lot. I'm not usually in a good mood. But it is fun to listen to. Some of the songs just make you happy inside. It is really hard to explain. I like 1039 SOSH and Kerplunk for the early sound. For some reason I like bands' earlier sounds at the moment. I like the raw feel. It is almost refreshing after you hear all the polished stuff out now.
