I'm digging ballyhoo, even if the lyrics are a bit awkward at times. I'm also hearing some Linda Lindas influence in the melodies lol

For those who care, Apple Music lists “Ballyhoo” as being recorded by Chris Dugan and produced by Rob Cavallo :D

So what does that even mean?

It's definitely better than Smash It Like Belushi. I didn't really care for that track when I first heard it but now I'm already completely bored of it. This would've been a much better track to release first even if it's not anything to write home about either.

It means extravagant publicity. Anyway, I’m hooked on this one!!! “So no hard feelings, climb the ceiling, madness ballyhoo!!!!”

Oooh, really love Ballyhoo. That falsetto made my heart skip, Billie’s singing in this song is fantastic. The lyrics don’t especially make a lot of sense to me lol, but the sound of the song is just so cool.

Really, really, like this song. I love the falsetto, but the best part is the "Madness, ballyhoo" part. It's raw.

The only thing that I don't like as much is the "hey, yuh" part - it's too "pop" if that makes sense.

Love both SILB & Ballyhoo.

According to Wik' GD have released over 200 songs.

Does anyone else come close to Billie Joe's amazing song writing skills, both lyrics and melody. Not imho.

Way yer go Billie Joe, your awesome. ❤️

“Yuh” is like Ariana Grande’s favorite word so I understand what you’re saying.

I can’t already see Fantanos next weekly review of songs. He will put this one at the bottom, just shake his head and say it’s typical pop punk, and move on.

loving it! might be even better than belushi

its nice to see the direction they are going/sticking to

new songs, recorded after the last lp, but they are still very good

and i can totally see the trilogy influence somehow

its not as generic as back to the usa was, they use different chords, mixed with different song structures and bridges etc

hopefully we will get to experience those new songs during their european tour next month

Are these newly recorded or are they from the 1972/Saviors sessions?

Ballyhoo lyrics:

[Verse 1: Billie Joe Armstrong]
Hurry up, hurry up, get moving
Just to fall down again
I'm looking like a jerk, looking like a jerk
And I'm feeling like a lunatic
Fuck it up, live it up, and give up
Stay-at-home wanderlust
I'm gonna lollygag in a sleeping bag
I'm as useless as a dumb and a crippled ballerina

[Chorus: Billie Joe Armstrong & Mike Dirnt]
Some days I'm reaching for a blade, I gotta let it go
Sometimes I'm reaching for a knife, I gotta let it go
So no hard feelings, climb the ceiling
Madness, ballyhoo

[Post-Chorus: Billie Joe Armstrong & Mike Dirnt]
Hey
Yuh

[Verse 2: Billie Joe Armstrong]
Listen up, listen I've been drinking
Touched by the hand of luck
I'm waiting on the sun, waiting on the sun
Like a star that's blowing up
It's a curse, it's at worst a blessing
God and his only son
Ah, mama raised the bomb, chewing bubblegum
With a head full of trouble and a lesser main offender

[Chorus: Billie Joe Armstrong & Mike Dirnt]
Some days I'm reaching for a blade, I gotta let it go
Sometimes I'm reaching for a knife, I gotta let it go
So no hard feelings, climb the ceiling
Madness, ballyhoo

[Instrumental Break]

[Chorus: Billie Joe Armstrong & Mike Dirnt]
Some days I'm reaching for a blade, I gotta let it go
Sometimes I'm reaching for a knife, I gotta let it go
Some days I'm reaching for a blade, I gotta let it go
Sometimes I'm reaching for a knife, I gotta let it go
So no hard feelings, climb the ceiling
Madness, ballyhoo

[Outro: Billie Joe Armstrong & Mike Dirnt]
Hey
Yuh

To me it sounds like a common topic recently which is how he feels with his on again off again up and down struggle with a harmful habit. Reach for a knife, let it go, live it up, give up, it’s a curse, the worst, mama raised a bomb.. it’s in his nature to be a hellion but he fights against it.

A couple of images I love are “useless as a … crippled ballerina” and “waiting on the sun like a star that’s blowing up”. It’s like another way of describing himself as a dead man walking. Like disaster has already struck but he doesn’t know it yet.

He might write a lot about a short list of themes but no one captures the human condition and describes feelings in a simple yet relatable and emotional way like he does. He somehow always avoids sounding too self indulgent or self pitying. Like with Smash It Like Belushi the message is when you’re feeling this way just keep your head down keep going and rip shit up. It’s empowering 💚

You're the best 💚

Sounds like sex drugs and violence from the trilogy…seems to cover suicide/self harm drinking and a lo of other topics. Wonder what song the music video will be for?

Really loving Ballyhoo. After Smash it Like Balushi I was expecting these to just be rejected Saviors songs, and maybe that's what this is -- but it's a very strong one IMO. With Holy Toledo, Saviors and these new tracks it feels like the guys have really found their footing again, with a sound that's still *new* Green Day but with enough of what we love left in.

I've spoken a few times about how Saviors feels like a taste of all their previous albums: I feel like this one could have easily sat somewhere on Saviors as the trilogy inspired track.

I think it has Longshot vibes too, both the music and the melancholy message it’s giving Chasing A Ghost and Happiness.
