New Song: "Here Comes the Shock"

Recommended Posts

The song is definitely growing on me despite the lyrics. I just wish the chorus had even one more line...

Here comes the shock

Here come the martyrs

Here comes the shock

Here comes the shock

Of course if it was a Network song we'd have:

Here comes the shock

In a chemical future

Here comes the shock

Give me anesthesia (with some clever backing vocal in response from Tre)

Just me?

really hope this isn't indicative of anything to come in the future because it's really bad. I wasn't expecting a chart-topping song since this seems to be a one-off but come on, guys. It's super embarrassing.

Absolutely, so much so that the preview actually sounded better than the full song. I listened to it several times to make sure my ears weren't deceiving me, but yes, it really is that poorly written and repetitive. Thing is, what needs to happen now is that enough people (preferable those in some sort of contact with the band) need to let them know (if they don't know already) that this really isn't great by any standards and certainly not by Green Day's "usual" standards. I just hope that they've hit a low-point and that it's all uphill from here...

New song.. not good. Honestly, Nightlife is much better.

I think the main thing about Green Day is that they need to send their EBPM crew on vacation for some time, stop working with people like Butch Walker and accept the fact that they're gonna be 50 soon. I think there are too many yes men around them and it hurts them so much in my opinion. Like Steve Jobs said, if you're gonna work with people that aren't as good as you, you'll become a country of midgets. Elvis did a similar thing and look what it did to him.

I hope they'll get really angry at the world someday, like they did after Warning, and make a truly great record again as Green Day. As Billie gets older I'm not sure if he even wants to achive greatness anymore. I feel like he fears it a lot. Especially after I read that Rolling Stone article called My Life in 15 songs. Just look at what he said about writting 21 Guns. After they released 21st CB he said many times that the record broke him. He put so much into it that I think he really meant it in some small or bigger way.

With that said I'm 100% sure that he didn't lose anything from his songwritting abilitites. He just struggles with choosing what music of his belongs to Green Day.

What's EBPM?

Good point. They literally could have replaced 1 or 2 "here comes the shock" lines and it would have been much better.

East Bay Punk Mafia (ie, their inner circle crew)

Proably it would fix it a bit for me. I highly dislike one line choruses.

For instance, I think they need to stick with Butch Walker. I love the guy and his approach to music. The master class he did showing the demo of FOAM was great and it shows why he was chosen to work with them. The song doesn't suck due its production. The production is quite good. The problem is the song itself, especially the chorus. But anyway, that's how it is

Well Rob is the only producer that they've had for multiple albums so of course you can't say that about their other producers who've only produced 1 album for them

21st Century Breakdown is my favourite album and imo their best album. So I wouldn't mind seeing Butch Vig back.

Butch did well but the sound was overly compressed.

So what they were doing on The Trilogy? If this is a return to form, then Lord help us.

It is.

He will.

It's his favorite band, after all.

Despite being a huge fan of this song, I do have one complaint.

Billie Joe on backing vocals, man.      You have Dirnt, man.   Put him in the game, you son of a gun!

I know you guys are all realistic with your "it's not gonna be on the album" shloch.

BUT.

I'd be fine with "Dreaming" and "Here Comes the Shock" being on Album 14.

;)

Some of you guys that were counting "amyl"s and "nitrate"s  are complaining about the repetitive nature of this song.

23 times is a bit much.    I think if the chorus had one other line, this song wouldn't be getting hated on as much.     One more line.   You're gonna give me one line?

This is a joke.  a Freaking joke.

I dunno.

its decent, not amazing but chorus doesnt do a lot....but I reckon a lot of the people hating on it saying its worse than nightlife would still rock out to it at a live show

If they played this at a concert I was at, that would be used as an opportunity to go to the bar, or the bathroom.

This distinctly reminds me of British punk from the 70s - not sure how I feel about it.  It makes me want to put on the Buzzcocks, who were obviously quite good at that... being, you know, a British punk band from the 70s.

Besides Misfits, I just thought of another thing it sounds like. Listen to the end when it gets all crazy and then Tre shouts “You’re doing it fucking wrong!” then listen to the Beatles’ Helter Skelter and the last minute where it does a similar thing musically and ends with Ringo shouting, “I got blisters on my fingers!”

From Kerrang (includes lyrics)

Seeing the full lyrics (and deciphering that he says, "This isn't rock and roll, this is genocide!" near the end), basically confirms in my mind that these lyrics are about the BLM protests last summer.

From whose perspective?

I can't make heads or tails of these lyrics.

I see it from the perspective of the protestors towards the world at large. The "Here Comes the Shock" refrain feels almost mocking given the context of the other lyrics, like, "Wow, people are surprised this is happening again?" when seen through the lens of being connected to an unarmed Black person getting shot.

I could post a longer analysis about how each line connects to what I think is the central idea, but not sure if anyone would want to read that.

I would rather watch Oh Love than this new video.

Oof I don't even know if I hate the video that much.

I've only heard the song a handful of times but I'm not impressed. It's okay. It's fine to hear like I won't mind listening to it. I'm sure if I'm in the right mood it'll be a banger and it seems like it'll be really fun live but otherwise I was very underwhelmed.

It's just fine.

Weezer aren’t embarrassing themselves. They just put out a new album with a really mature sophisticated sound

I love weezer and i think they're miles ahead of Green Day nowadays. I meant the raditude era or even pacific daydream or the black album. FF doesn't have one of those. I'm really excited to listen to van weezer and love ok human but that album is just not for every mood. Know what I mean?

I'd probably say OK Human is better than the new Foo Fighters. Tho I'm not really unbiased there. Could be that I also expect more from the foo fighters. Other than a few songs in the last few albums, I haven't liked much of their new stuff. But none of those bands can hold a candle to the Network. All hail the Network

Being a fan of both albums and been waiting for both for a bit i think I prefer medicine at midnight. It's more varied and just overall fun. Ok human is perfect for what it is but it's a bit irrelevant and i think that's because it's so mellow idk. But without questions both are miles ahead of foam
