I totally agree. I think 21CB is truly some of their best work. They were putting on phenomenal shows, and truly seemed like they were growing into themselves as the more “grown up” version of Green Day.

None of this is to say I believe you can’t have fun and let loose when you’re older or anything, but they just seem very adverse to embracing maturity for any length of time. I know RevRad didn’t climb to the ambitious heights of 21CB, but I felt in attitude and feel, it struck a nice balance of them getting back to more stable, mature place where they kinda accepted themselves as they were.

You know, contrary to what most people think, I've always thought that it was 21CB and not AI that truly marked the before and after in their lives. With AI, I feel Billie put his entire soul, and as a band they were able to deliver this amazing album because there were no expectations and it was a "all bets are off" situation. But with 21CB, they had to prove themselves with the eyes of the entire world in them, and I truly think they managed to challenge themselves creatively like never before (I honestly think of 21CB as their magnus opus), but it was at the cost of Billie putting his mental health on the line, which took an evident emotional toll on him, as Billie himself acknowledged in the Rolling Stone interview that his drinking and pill consumption started to really take off during this era. I mean, even in the way he described the narrative of the album, as Christian representing his self-destructive tendencies and Gloria his idealistic side, you can see that a part of him was able to recognize that this starry-eyed side of him was going to be ultimately consumed by his harmful ways (nothing kills me more that hearing ¿Viva la Gloria?, especially the line "you're just a junkie preaching to the choir"). And that's not even counting the musical, which saw them not only at the top of the world yet again, but also indulging into this new dangerous dynamic where the lines between the personifying characters and reality were getting blurrier.

After this huge creative effort, where do you even go from then on? I think any person would have tried to back-track a little on the grandness, even though I do think they tried to have their cake and eat it with the trilogy, with them having the paradox of a super grand back to basics era, but when you get to the point in your career where you are standing in the highest part of the mountain and you don't know how to come down, I don't blame them for thinking jumping down would seem to be the best bet. And as much as I love RevRad, deep down I think they were over-correcting for the failures of the trilogy by doing exactly was expected of them by their fans and general public (though it doesn't take away the fact that those lyrics are some of the most personal in Billie's career), which showed from the singles choices (like Bang Bang being the ultimate fan-service lead) to their interviews in which they opened up about Trump right after his election even when it seemed to be a really sensitive and emotional topic for Billie that early into his presidency.

So I think, more than an issue of maturity (though I do agree with you that the media image of them as never growing up is really eye-rolling inducing and they like to play up this a little bit more than I would like), for them it's an issue of not catering to what people desire (and sometimes demand) from them. It seems that whenever they're are in a crossroad situation in their career, they like to intentionally go for the exact opposite direction that people expect from them (like in Insomniac or Warning), except in 21CB, where they aimed even higher and, in an Icarus way, flew to close to the sun, and RevRad, where they probably felt the dangers of falling into a safe creative space. And this almost stubborn desire to not settling to expectations is the basis that drives FOAM, like they really graphically illustrated in the album cover. Now, in the light of the discussion in this thread, I do think the album dances on the knife end between being a cathartic release or a motivator of this self-destructive tendencies, and some marketing choices made are really not helping define this lines any better (like I just realized that the billboard poster was written in coke wth?), but ultimately, I'm glad the boys are still looking to challenge themselves artistically even +30 years down the road, and I can only hope music continues to be a freeing process for Billie to channel his emotions in a healthy way without the burden of any preconceived notions, because I want the guys to express themselves exactly how they want and for a long time.

If Billie is reading GDC, he's read some much more upsetting things than people politely expressing concern for his wellbeing

Of course not darlin. They don't have to worry about the 100 people on this forum, we would come even if they played King for Day for 2 1/2 hours. (That would probably be great!!!). They need to play to the other 34,900 people at the show.

This got me thinking about how many people in the world are poor and how many are rich.   I've heard many times that if you have a place to live, you're rich by most standards.   Even if you're living in a condemned pile of garbage, you're doing better than a lot of people.

So what is the average worldwide income.........

The median annual household income worldwide is $9,733, and the median per-capita household income is $2,920, according to new Gallup metrics.

WOW, that's loud!  Sure cost of living is different everywhere, but I couldn't imagine living on either of those amounts.

So if you're feeling poor, just keep in mind it could be A LOT WORSE.

And I've certainly felt poor.  The last time my car broke down, I was looking at cars less than 300 dollars.   They are out there, but don't expect a working engine or a non-blown head gasket.   Haha.     "CAR RUNS GREAT, JUST NEEDS AN ENGINE PUT IT."    "CAR IN PERFECT CONDITION, EXCEPT THE ENGINE IS ON FIRE"    haha

If they just played Last Ride In a hundred times I would gladly fork over my money.

I wouldn't crawl though lmao

That's my favorite GD song of all time

What if they took a poll on their website for each show and fans can pick one song. Then they run it to see what songs got the most and pick like 20-25. 😱

I hope for a live stream show that we can choose the songs all live and they'll play it and we'll watch it. I don't know they've done it before but when Muse did that it was so great. They basically played a dream setlist and being able to watch that and involve the show in a way with all of the fans around the world made me so happy.

I'm gonna sound like an elitist asshole right now, and maybe rightfully so, but I have a fear of Casual Fans™ ruining anything like that. Every time I'm at a concert I hear people screaming for songs that more often than not are the most popular ones that always gets played no matter what. In Green Days case that would be the annoying fucks that desperately scream 'pLs PlAy BaSkEt CaSe' over and over again. However, GD won't ever give us the opportunity for something like this so it won't be a problem :P (:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:)

And there are posers in concerts like don’t really have an idea about their stuff but acting like that. I might be one of them for some bands tbh lol and I witnessed some of them in other bands’ concerts. It was hilarious lol

Well let's hope Youngblood never leaves the setlist - that song is so bloody great live☺️

It's not hard - they just need a section in the setlist that is a change up - not the same bloody moves, speeches, songs every concert. :)

Someone has even written an article about this (although I don't think it says anything we didn't already know):

True, but this is the first we’re hearing of Billie actually confirming it. Hurts like hell to see..

I'd love for GD to ask fans what they want to hear more often. When they did it at Leeds they played Armatage Shanks but as you can see from 8:35 people were shouting out "Jaded", "Basket Case" (even though Basket Case is always on the setlist 🙄) and "I love you Billiieeeee". I'd love for more older songs to end up on the setlist in this way.

Don't worry to sound like one, because Casual Fans™ is the most common denominator in bands like Green Day. There a very few cases (like Muse) that something like a "show by request" would work and brings us rarities in a ton. Metallica did this on 2014, and only TWO sets were friggin awesome, from a list of 26 possible shows. Then the next year they played the leftovers they practiced to perform on that tour but never were played because such fans. So, the band did a better picking than the fans.

The worst case scenario, that bands tend to avoid is to get dead or very little response from the crowd, so that's why setlists get stagnant and repeat over and over again. To ensure crowd response. And Billie Joe before that he feeds on that. I remember that in one particular show (Brasilia 2010) he got pissed, thrown away the guitar and then resumed with most known songs.

It can be worse tho. The band is getting tired of playing the same. Maybe something will change this time.

I hate that. If you're paying to be at a concert, even if they play something you don't know, go wild and have fun anyway. We have the worst crowds in my city. People mostly like to just stand there, and get mad if you bump into them. 🙃

Red Hot Chilli Peppers changed their setlist throughout their last OZ tour & their set was short - GD have soooo many hits - all would appeal to the so called casual fan - I can always dream :)

They have so many hits right now that they could easily fill up a full length set with them and still not enough time to play them all 😂

Peppers have 43 singles

They were tied with Green Day but now Green Day have 47.

I'd be okay with an all singles show.

Only single people allowed and only singles allowed to be played.

Heck, a ton of their singles ARE rarities for the stage!

The.

Exactly! I made a post in the other thread about set lists that has a list of all the singles, all of them back to back would be about 2 hours and 40 minutes, but there is some stuff there they haven't played in years and I mean YEARS and overall it would be a pretty kickass setlist, covering most of the band's albums so there's something for everyone.

I would absolutely love to hear stuff like Working Class Hero, The Saints are Coming and Maria, but ehhh it's probably never going to happen, not exactly like that anyway, but it would be fuckin' sick.
