It doesn’t sound anything like them? That’s called experimenting. My worse fear with this album is that it would sound like Rev Rad or Longshot, which would mean that Billie was in a songwriting rut. It couldn’t be more different and I really like that. You’re just stuck on the point that you don’t personally like this song without being able to see the bigger picture. And you might love the rest of the album. People just need to quit being so fatalistic about this one song. It’s an overreaction.

I wasn’t asking for you to try to reach this person, just trying to figure out how the original info was received. Can you recap that for those of us who weren’t paying attention at the time?

Its not an experimental project. Its like they came up with the simpliest melody that is similar to dos and added falsettos. Its the same green day-ish structure but more boring and unoriginal.

Why so nasty? I asked a simple question. Whether you like it dislike the song is irrelevant. Other than Billie trying to do a bad Frankie Valli imitation it sounds exactly like what everyone would expect of them. There is nothing that they haven't done before with that song.

Usually the first single is the song that is supposed to have the broadest appeal. If the dedicated fanbase is split on the first single, it doesnt give much hope for the other 23 min.

Then throw in the immature, obnoxious title, that will surely be a turn off to many people, it doesnt say much for the rest of the album.

Now who is not looking at the big picture

Whether or not a person likes or doesn’t like the song is not irrelevant. It’s called personal opinion. I respect that you don’t like the song, but many people on here seem to have a hard time with the idea that some people do. The fact that some of you are still asking people  about whether they like it shows that. It’s also  your opinion that it’s “expected”. For many people it isn’t. Can we just accept that it’s a polarizing song and quit trying to convince people with all of the reasons that it’s bad, in your opinion? It’s not gonna change minds. You either like it or you don’t.

Whether you like the song or not in relation to it being experimental is irrelevant. I never once tried to convince you to not like the song. I personally dont care if you do or dont. I simply asked why you thought it was experimental. Which you have not answered. Simply it doesnt sound like them is not really an answer. Did they use a different chord progression, did they use different instruments, etc. I can say alot if songs sound like them but they really aren't experimental.

You are the one getting upset because I asked a question. I was trying to have a discussion and YOU are the one that got upset. Now who is the one that vant handle someone having a different opinion from them

Of course I think everyone likes the song (even if it's a lil bit), It's still Green day and we wouldn't be talking about that much otherwise. The fact is that it is undeniably weak, with debatable bad production (vocals), common and I see to much re-use, the guitar sounds exactly the same of Fuck Time, the lyric are a mess and he re used again the "I woke up to" intro verse changing the end

It's like GOT 8, you love it because you can do anything else but you have to acknowledge things should have gone better and there are cracks

I don’t agree with everything you said, but what I don’t agree with the most is that your opinion is undeniable ;)

This thread reminds me of all those “Here’s how Bernie can still win” threads on Reddit lol.

Still hope there is something to it though.

If those who hate the song aren’t trying to convince other people to hate the song, why are you repeatedly listing reasons as to why we should hate the song?

Are you referring to me?

This board was split when Oh Love first came out, and hell even with Know Your Enemy there was the "too repetitive, unoriginal" crowd.  This happens at the beginning of every new era.

Loved both, even tattooed Oh love's refrain on my arm. What I said is that likeable or not they were very solid and undeniably well produced. KYE is incredible how it sounds still so well after 10 years

Have we ever had conspiracy theories about an era being fake before? 😂

Im still a little worried he just worded more singles wrong. Like usually when a band talks about another single they word it like "New music's coming tomorrow" when they mean a new single. So for all we know Billie could have meant "Oh there'll be more singles before the album release :)" or whatever, since a 26 minute long 10 track album getting more than 1 single sounds weird.

He talked about the new music in relation to being free from Warner. That did make it sound like he meant other music than other Warner album singles

I haven't read all this thread yet but I really couldn't care less if Foam was their only musical release or at least album as such in 2020. It perhaps won't be since Billie spoke about releasing more. But after making a trilogy and suffering from the backlash of releasing these numerous songs back to back followed by a forced interruption of the tour, it may be another sort of fuck you to release a 26 minutes album (thank you @Little Boy Named Airplane for the definition of an album that has to be at least 25 minutes, that sure is funny), like saying: "ppl weren't glad about 37 songs, all that at once? Well now they're getting 26 minutes, the strict minimum. Still not glad? Meanwhile we still rock and we are beyond all this" lol. I feel like this could be the only real message behind all this and would still be great (and enough as far as trolling as well)

Nope.  This is all new territory!   For what it's worth, if they are faking it,  I'm loving it!  The song by itself, took a few listens to really get into, but I'm digging it.

We definitely will get more singles. 1 single 6 months prior to the album release wouldn't make sense

The new song is definitely experimental in the vocals, that's undeniable. Billie was experimenting with his vocals, trying to sing in a way he hasn't before and even though I'm not a fan of it and much prefer his natural voice, that's definitely experimentation. Musically, it's not that much different for them but the instruments still sound loud and awesome imo in this track

I'm actually hoping for a new single soon (even though we've just got the first one) because I just want a new song that I love and I really can't say that about this first one. I feel like the next one they release will probably sound more like Billie, at least I hope so

EDIT: Btw when I say soon, I mean in like maybe a month

Yeah most people don't know how to feel about changes in sound and just changes in general. The thing with Oh Love and Know Your Enemy though was that they still fit in that 2000's Green Day formula. They're two different songs of course and they have things unique to them but essentially fit into what you might expect from a first single. Oh Love I thought was a bit too slow but the vocal phrasing definitely fit into the formula they had at the time.

This time that Green Day formula was not present starting right off in the beginning with the vocals. I heard lots of negative things about the vocals but not one person actually said that it was technically impressive. I did see one review video online where one person was like "Wow he goes into falsetto for that entire verse not many singers do that or can do that".

I feel like this single is not really for Green Day fans but more for indie stations that are playing modern indie stuff. This song is a fusion of a lot of different sounds from a ton of different eras and hence here we have something new.
