I tend to listen to the music more, especially early on, but that's one that the lyrics really jumped out on their own and I noticed how dark it truly was. Yeah it took me so long to understand what it's about 2 Quote
Billie Joes Eyelids Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 These lyrics sound more angry than sad to me. 1 Quote

It's simplistic but not in a bad way. These lyrics have a quite heavy emotion to them. Calling the lyrics lazy or meaningless doesn’t seem fair to me. Artist is the one shapes his work with his own point of view so it always depends on him. You may not like it but it doesn’t mean he is careless or not being honest 3 Quote

killjoywhatsername Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 I was slowly getting more on board with this after Oh Yeah! and now seeing the lyrics... this is definitely going to be like the trilogy for me. It’s gonna take some getting used to but I’ll ultimately like it a lot. Except FRA. I still can’t stand that song. I haven’t listened to the live version but it’s the only new Green Day single since I started listening during the AI that I haven’t put on repeat at some point. 2 Quote

There's a certain ugliness to it that seems to be an artistic choice. He's singing about stuff that isn't nice and he's not glossing it. The kitchiness of the visuals plays into this too. Now that I think of it, Madonna Inn is featured in Umberto Eco's On Ugliness, so yeah, it's a literal textbook example of a grotesque aesthetic. And it makes sense in the context of his disgusted imagery (crawling on the floor, spit), it's a contrast and there's also a lot of cynicism in it. There's some cruel mockery in that, "rock'n'roll tragedy / I think the next one could be me". Yeah, I definitely see it as an deliberate artistic choice, reading the lyrics now I can see the lyrical inspiration he took from artists like Kendrick Lamar, like he explained in interviews. I didn't know about the link between the Madonna Inn and Eco's book, but now that you pointed out, it's an interesting point, and while they probably didn't use it thinking about that essay, it shows the association some people make of kitschy aesthetic and ugly imagery, kinda like The Shining also used a lot of maximalist and colorful rooms to contrast the gory scenes. 5 Quote

Yeah, exactly, it's the fancy party and lavishness that topples into the disgusting. Madonna Inn is a perfect place for that. The Shining comes to mind, and maybe also Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas. I don't know whose poetry I'm reminded of, but it's on the tip of my tongue. 3 Quote

The lyrics could be simple but also have deep emotions Oh I'm sorry, I can't read. Yeah, you're right. It's not lazy, it's just a choice to write in a simple way and maybe eventually that can convey meaning better than more complicated writing. Plus if the idea is that these songs are meant to be raw, it's necessary. 1 Quote

The Grohl Posted February 1, 2020 Posted February 1, 2020 Nah. Warner seems to be hellbent on keeping this thing locked under, which is totally fine with me 2 Quote
