I hate when Green Day gets pigeonholed into being like a campy cartoony kid friendly band. I like when they’re fun and real and kinda dangerous feeling. Spontaneous and strange. I like it. Long live these parts of the Trilogy I LOVE OH LOVE (it’s like it’s new to me again right now I always loved it and long live Foxboro Hot Tubs and long live the Longshot and I applaud the Longshot for playing Stay the Night and Fell for You and Wild One. Love exploring these themes and this side of Green Day. Can’t wait to see what happens with the FBHT reunion rumours and the Longshot and seeing if any of this will influence new Green Day and get the inspiration and fun and ideas pumping again.
Hermione Posted December 2, 2018 Posted December 2, 2018 This is the most love for the Oh Love video I've ever witnessed! I quite liked it so this pleases me

PleasedToMeetMe Posted December 8, 2018 Posted December 8, 2018 Oh Love video, in my opinion, was generic crap. Have always really enjoyed the Holiday video, especially the "Zieg hiel to the president gas man" part. THAT'S Green Day, not some horny middle aged married men acting like prepubescent boys cuz there's a boob

Didn’t know it belonged on the unpopular opinions thread but I hate the Oh Love video. Maybe they were being ironic but one thing I love about Green Day is they’ve never been a misogynistic band. This just isn’t who they are, even if the songs are about sex. This just feels sexist. And personally, I think it would have been a much more interesting video if they would have made Billie the sex object with the girls all over him instead of the opposite where they just come off as pervy old men. If they wanted to play with the rock and roll trope they could have done something more like this:
BilIie Joe Armstrong Posted December 8, 2018 Posted December 8, 2018 I agree the video is very badly executed and it's so embarrassing that it makes it difficult to even thirst which is a shame because Billie is HAWT in it possibly hawtest ever.
jengd Posted December 9, 2018 Posted December 9, 2018 I so agree with @pacejunkie punk and @Jane Lannister. I can’t believe these three guys who I love so much meant the Oh Love video to come over the way it did, it appears to me completely out of character, not true to them and made me pretty uncomfortable. If they didn’t make videos like this in the 90s, why start now?

I like when they try something new even if it’s misunderstood. Creativeness and trying new things is important. The video is far from generic if you look at some of subtleties or are mature about it rather than focusing on the fact that there’s a boob.

Hermione Posted December 9, 2018 Posted December 9, 2018 The trilogy is literally about being a horny middle aged man though lol. It's all about temptation and mid life crisis themes. They go into all different sides of it including more serious ones but Oh Love is about the lust part. It isn't the same as videos from the 90s because the content of the album isn't the same as in the 90s. Even though the video is poorly executed the basic idea of rockstars hanging out with models having fun and being horny does reflect the theme of the song. It doesn't have to be a literal representation of the band members, they can play characters in a video. If instead of just looking like Green Day and models being really awkward together (due to bad directing and acting), it actually looked like they were playing rockstars unlike themselves and they and the models were having loads of fun partying and being sexy with each other I think it could've worked. I think they claimed it was supposed to be something like that, but they failed

Virginia Lot Lizard Posted December 9, 2018 Posted December 9, 2018 The Oh Love video didn’t generally come across like it was supposed to but I think the hate for it is so lame and shortsighted. It’s not my favourite video but I applaud their bravery for trying something new. I like the video and I like how excited they were about sharing their new and different work. And to put the word misogynistic and Green Day in the same sentence is silly and uncalled for. Green Day is the epitome of the band that stands against sexism and they have an inherinent love for women. I’m proud of Green Day every time they try something new and step out of what is expected of them. I hope the new album does more of the same. I was happily surprised with the Revolution Radio record but I still felt that they were playing it pretty safe with that record. Even the set lists on the RevRad tour were really predictable and safe. I really hope this new record causes a fuss like the Trilogy and American Idiot did. Seems like Billie has a lot of inspiration right now. I can’t wait to hear the new record! Hopefully there won’t be a weird negative backlash if the record is something new or interesting and it isn’t a carbon copy of AI or Dookie. They have been Green Day for literally decades and they deserve to be able to grow and try new things.

No one is against trying something new and the criticism of the Oh Love video isn't based on accusations of misogyny in the first place - the main objection has always been that it sucks.

That’s what I was referring to when I said putting the word misogynistic and Green Day in the same sentence was silly. Not the whole criticism of Oh Love in general. It’s ok to have an opinion and it is generally agreed that Green Day love women and people. No racism, no sexism, no homophobia. But it seems that people are complaining about Oh Love but calling Billie HAWT and then there are things like the Green Day Fangirls thread. I think there’s a lot of hypocrisy. I think Green Day should be able to be sexy and fun on their own terms too.
Hermione Posted December 9, 2018 Posted December 9, 2018 I think a flaw in the video is that it could come across as sexist, simply because they didn't get that balance of the band being into the girls because they're hot models and the girls being into the band because they're hot rockstars and everyone having a great time right. Or alternatively had them playing really obviously over the top rockstar caricatures with everything clearly meant ironically. Because of the poor direction and awkwardness etc it does come off more like the models are being used as "accessories" with the band sitting around and looking wide-eyed at them. I don't think that was the intention or that it means the band are sexist/misogynistic in any way but it's just the way the video can come across. If the same idea had been executed better it wouldn't have that problem.

No matter how you spin it, it's a video with filthy old men and a bunch of models who are acting prostitutes. It may be just a trope but it still is a sexist trope.
Billie Hoe Posted December 9, 2018 Posted December 9, 2018 Calling something they did misogynist or racist or homophobic is not the same as saying they're bad people. Contrary to popular belief, your cis white male faves aren't perfect. They are still role models to me and I love them for all the effort they put into being good people, but they're only human beings who make mistakes, who have to unlearn conscious and sub-conscious racist/homophobic/sexist behaviors and mindsets like all of us, like everyone who is privileged in a certain aspect, and making excuses for them instead of acknowledging there's room for improvement helps nobody. It actually dismisses the concerns of those who are affected by racism/sexism/homophobia. How can anybody learn if they aren't allowed to fuck up? I used to idealize them (especially Billie) to the point where the mere insinuation that they made a tiny misstep would send me spiraling into an identity crisis and I felt the need to defend their every action head over heels and find any justification for it. Putting them on a pedestal and holding them to a standard they'll never be able to live up to will just bite you in the ass sooner or later. Loving someone and criticizing them at the same time isn't hypocrisy.
Virginia Lot Lizard Posted December 9, 2018 Posted December 9, 2018 Green Day are not perfect. They are interesting and flawed human beings. There should be mistakes. It would be weird if there wasn’t but there’s good and bad in a lot of things and there’s more than one way to look at art. Brilliance can be seen in the strangest ways if you choose to see it. 2018 looks like it’s been an inspiring year for Billie and he seems inspired and eager to write. I’m excited to see what happens next.
PleasedToMeetMe Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 I didn't like any of the trilogy videos except for the Nuclear Family and Stay The Night ones, which were essentially the same ones lol. Kill The DJ was alright but also seems like it didn't come out exactly like they pictured. Honestly one of my all time fav GD videos is "Back In The USA".
