Whatshername had a video and everything, so I would say it was the first would have been / should have been single.  American Idiot was so well received, it should have had 13 singles, gosh darn it.

Really? Whatsername had a video? I don't remember ever seeing one and don't see an official on youtube, do you have it or a link?  I love Whatersname to bits, Billie's voice is just awesome on it and the wall of sound toward the end makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up every time!

I absolutely love letter bomb, but I've always found it as an "album track" or story song. It's such a vital point of the story in the context of the album and I've never assumed it would work as a single.

It was unreleased but there is one for it. It's a terrible video though

God, you weren’t wrong, thank goodness that was never released, it’s awful!

It's a pretty hard question to answer in general terms, as songs I don't think sound good as singles are super popular, and songs I DO think sound good don't even make dents on the charts

However if I'm thinking of a catchy, radio friendly Green Day song that might have done well, I'd probably go with Brutal Love. Or maybe Drama Queen. Or Sassafras Roots maybe!

Not up to par with the other American Idiot videos by any stretch of the imagination.  It's just the girl from the Jesus of Suburbia video rolling around on the ground.  I believe that this video was not completed, that this is just footage that they were going to edit together with something else, maybe performance footage or SOMETHING.  Otherwise, it's a terrible video.   The song is so powerful and emotional, it really deserves better than this, and if this was the final cut, no wonder they didn't release it.  The song was supposed to be years after the relationship, and the video version just confuses that aspect of the song.

For the trilogy specifically....I get they didnt wanna do 3-4 singles per album since it may be a bit much to have 12 singles but i feel each should have gotten 2 and if they did i would pick

1.)  Nuclear Family - A nice short song thats more in line with their older songs, a nice way to show they're not going huge this time
2.) Stay the Night - A slower song but not as slow and boring as Oh Love was. Catchy and would work well as a single
3.) Stray Heart - Not much to say, i'd keep it as a single
4.) Wow! Thats Loud! - It has energy to it i really like and feel it'd have appeal. Most people i showed random green day songs to that dont like rock much usually like the song.
5.) X-Kid - Not much to say either, i'd keep it as a single
6.) 99 Revolutions - Not saying it SHOULD but im surprised it didnt. IIRC around the time, this was the song they promoted a lot. The tour was called the 99 Revolutions Tour, Billie said its one of the best he's written, they talked about it a lot, it was usually in trailers/teasers for Tre iirc, etc.

I LOVE Kill the DJ but i only wanted to pick 2 per album and feel Nuclear Family and Stay the Night would be better as singles ;-;

Other honorable mentions include Brutal Love, Missing You, Lady Cobra, Lazy Bones, Carpe Diem.

Insomniac is a funny one to me where none of it’s singles are in my favourite songs of the album, but I do think that they picked the correct songs to be singles. I love Stuart and the Ave, but Brain Stew is much more radio friendly. I do wish that song, Westbound Sign and 86 got more attention though.

I mostly just wish that East Jesus Nowhere was promoted properly and with a proper music video. I’d also have taken a song like the Static Age as a single over Last of the American Girls.

If I could only choose one from each album it would be these.

Dookie: They nailed it, nothing missing there
Insomniac: 86, it's catchy enough for the radio
Nimrod: Scattered! I'm convinced it would have been a HUGE hit
Warning: Macy's Day Parade because it's one of their most beautiful songs and deserved more recognition
American Idiot: Letterbomb for sure, just another hit of many on AI
21CB: Viva La Gloria. Just unbelievably catchy and one of those songs you love instantly
Uno: Stay The Night would have gone over really well with lots of people I believe with it's relatable lyrics
Dos: Lazy Bones
Tré: Brutal Love
RevRad: Forever Now. One of the best songs GD ever made. Full of emotion, catchy. Fairly long but hey, it worked for JOS.
