Coldplay was pretty much torn apart for that performance (everyone said it was boring), and for being shown up by Beyoncé.

True.

Everyone is shown up by Beyoncé. I wouldn’t say no to Green Day feat. Beyoncé, when I saw her a couple of years ago she didn’t bother doing single ladies and I feel like GD would be able to make that happen for me.

Oh I love Beyoncé. She should actually do every super bowl halftime show.

Green Day is kind of in a weird spot to do this at this point in their career. They're not mainstream enough to be an obvious choice but they're not old or irrelevant enough to be a legacy act. I think if they did it and paired up with a pop star, regardless of who or their reasons, they would look like they're desperately clinging on to mainstream relevancy. They could do it by themselves and put on a great show, but I think mainstream audiences kind of look at rock performances now as something very...out of place. Like an older adult trying to hang with a group of teens.

Green Day is better off just doing their thing on their terms and hanging out on the line between relevant and irrelevant. They're relevant enough to have tons of young fans and make some noise periodically on TV but if they push too hard in the pop world they're more likely to come off looking desperate. That said, if they did do this, I'd gladly tune in because there's no doubt that they'd do a great job.

It's really hard to call Green Day irrelevant. Their last album charted at number 1 (in many countries), and even when they realease a single out of nowhere like Back in the USA, it still reaches 10M views on Youtube. For a rock band (aside from Coldplay and Foo Fighters) that's pretty unheard of.

Maybe the proper solution would be to have Foo Fighters and Green Day do a halftime show together. They are different styles of rock, but I'm sure it would be pretty epic, and between the two bands, garner the fan base required to make it seem like a logical fit.

It’s up to the television station that is airing the Super Bowl. Glenn Frey said the eagles always got asked every time Fox got it, but always turned it down because they weren’t a “medley” band. Right now it’s all about pop artists and that’s all they’re gonna keep on doing because that’s the most popular music right now and it will bring the biggest turnout possible. And especially where the NFL is at rating wise with all of its protests they aren’t going to bring in a band that’s probable to yell “Fuck Donald Trump” for the halftime show.

I honestly don't think the Superbowl necessarily goes for the most popular artists; just the ones that can put on a show. Lady Gaga did it last year, and her album was only the 22nd best selling of the year it was released (2016). They have to choose someone who has a couple of massive hits coupled with performance ability, and in the streaming era it's getting harder to find those artists. I still think GD are a cert to do it at some point. And they'd be crazy to turn it down too, it's massive exposure.

With Trump being in this war with the NFL I doubt the NFL wants to alienate the audience with a group that is blatantly anti-Trump. That being said... GREEN DAY FOR HALFTIME SHOW 2019 & GO EAGLES!!!!!

Meh it's fairly easy to call Green Day irrelevant, because they kinda are. Most 'big' bands have albums that go to number one these days because there's so little competition. 'Run' also came from nowhere and blew up pretty quickly.

I don't think a two-band show would happen because the two acts aren't an obvious combination.

I just don't see the reason to make this observation so frequently :P

I THINK it would be fun and I like the idea of them a d lady gaga together

As a non-super bowl watching Brit, it feels like the only thing we ever hear about the Superbowl is how badly the national anthem got butchered by whoever was performing this year 😂

Seriously, I think it would be awful if they performed with Lady Gaga and can’t imagine it at all, they recently were extremely non-committal when asked if they liked Lady Gaga, they clearly couldn’t say no but it was totally what they meant.

p!nk might be interesting though, have thought for a while Billie Joe and P!nk might sound good together.

Billie has a lot of respect for Lady Gaga. She went to see him on Broadway as St Jimmy and there are pictures of them schmoozing afterward. She was one of the first people he followed on Instagram, and he posted a pic of her performing at the AMAs. He also took his family to see her show. She in turn is known to be a big Green Day fan and has said that Dookie was the first album she bought with her own money. Lady Gaga, IMO, is a talented and revolutionary artist. I would love to see them work together, but not at the super bowl.

I would rather be sodomized on Christmas Day, by Harry Reid, in front of my entire family

Yeah, I know about the Broadway visit and that she’s a big fan etc etc, but I still saw a Revrad interview where it was plain Billie (and from the look on Mike and Tre’s faces, they too) are very far from fans.  It may have been the Deezer one, I will see if I can find it soon.

Maybe a little far, but I’m closer to your camp than the alternative. 😆

A Fox commentator called Green Day irrelevant as a when they were discussing Green Day's comments on Trump. Later my conservative Dad said to called them "passe" (as a jab at me) so I looked at him and said, "So is Mozart or the Beatles. It doesn't make them less great."

Here’s the interview where they are asked “do you love Lady Gaga”.  Could be just me but I think they are just being polite. It’s right at the end, for info, it’s also the one where they say they want to put out more new music “sooner rather than later”.

Yep they're still great, just means they're less likely to get booked for this sort of thing

I don’t know why this cracks me up so much. I’m picturing a Harry Reid with his eye patch watching....never mind.

Why would it be awful? Lady Gaga kicks ass. She's more than capable of holding her own and is all for theatrics, just like GD. Pink would be alright but I'd much rather Gaga because I love her

Billie at least was a big Lady Gaga fan at one point. He posted a bunch of total fanboy tweets when he went to see her in concert, and then literally said the reason he stopped interacting with fans on twitter (after he'd been doing so for a long time) was because of people giving him shit for liking her. And they were well impressed with hearing what a big fan of Dookie she was, as well as the other things mentioned. It was a mutual thing and not just her being a fan of them. It's possible they're not as big fans of her newer stuff/their opinion has changed or whatever but I think in that interview they were just in quite a sombre mood in general because of the election :P

Edit: Found some sample fanboying tweets
