Green Day is already going straight into the studio?

@Kuromignonne yes, a chaotic mess of songs from a production standpoint. You can see it in Cuatro. They had over sixty songs going into the studio and they couldn’t figure out how to pare them down or organize them into any coherent theme or order. It also meant they had to rehearse and arrange nearly that many just to decide on the thirty plus to go with. That’s triple the typical studio load and yes a chaotic mess, even if as fans you are happy with the result.

Tre cool singing. Mike on drums and Billie on bass.

All lyrics by Tre Cool. All music mostly by Jason White and Mike.

I'm fine with everything as long as Jeff will be lead singer.

Can't forget the big three I suppose.  Jason Freeze will have guitar solos.  So many guitar solos.

What you describe there, I don't think it was new for them at that point! I believe for 21st Century Breakdown, for instance, they also had a great amount of songs they had to select and organize before recording.

Yes, the difference with the trilogy is the quantity they chose to keep as to make 3 albums of all these songs, which was certainly 3 times heavier in terms of effort and cohesion. I'm not sure if you're saying the result is still a chaotic mess, I don't find it so, in any case not more messy than another album.

No, we were talking about producers. I wasn’t commenting on the finished result I was saying the process of making it was chaotic and the producer (in this case Rob Cavallo) should not carry the blame for that.

I would love to see a live album. Or a American Idiot styled album wiht less compression and a bit more distorted guitars. I would also like to see a fully acostic album (piano, acoustic guitars, acoustic bass, orchestra, and soft drums). Or a full cover album that would be cool. But yeh mostly a live album or a AI ''2''. Just dreaming of a acoustic album.

I think right now I really, really want another concept album. I'm listening to concept albums a lot lately, from Tommy over Thick as a Brick and Dark Side of the Moon to The Black Parade, and I once again realize what a great piece of art American Idiot is. I would love something really epic. Bring back St. Jimmy and tell his journey to hell and back, Dante-inspired, like a modern Divine Comedy. Oh God I think I've read too many of @Too Dumb to Die(s) posts:lol:

What I want? Just Billie Joe, Mike and Trè with Rob Cavallo on the soundboard. That's it

Concept album called ST. JIMMY!   Black cover with the title splattered in blood.

Broken into two parts.

Rage / Love.

The first 7 songs will be very fast, hard and raw.  The final Rage song will be called Alcohol and Cigarettes and Valentines and be about 13 minutes long.

the Love songs will be slower songs.

The album will finish with an epilogue of 3 songs which are blazing hard rock and super different than any Green Day music that's come before.  They are sort of a trilogy of songs that wrap up the St. Jimmy storyline and reveal how Jimmy and Jesus are one in the same, but they are both dead.  Billie is Billie and is still freaking out.  But he's become comfortable with the sofa pillows, yet still doesn't put off revolutions for another day.  He's a true punk rocker, the one he's always wanted to be.  St. Jimmy is dead, long live Billie Joe!

The album ends with a massive guitar solo that starts out with a 1039 sound and works its way through each era, ending with a preview of what is to come on the wildly anticipated Album 14!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't they just re-release American Idiot? Add a few good songs that didn't make it and rename it to Amercan Idiot, Again.

Jk.

But it's so fucking good.

I hope GD are as enthusiastic about the next album as you are

"Hexology" is the word you're looking for.  Haha

That actually sounds really cool!

The Green Day Hexology!

Oh lord, you've got me going again!

I could realistically see the band doing a double album later on in their career, probably a few albums down the road.  All they need is some really good inspiration.  a two-disc album, not sold separate of course.   The Democrat / Republican album, where Green Day tackle tough political issues from the perspective of each side.  (I'm laughing so hard right now)

While I would love a double album, or even a dozen-disc monstrosity from these guys - one disc can contain a lot of music.  If they were supremely inspired they could fill up all 80 minutes of one compact disc and leave us fans satisfied with so much new music.  Around 20 great songs!

But a Hexology, oh boy. Each album could be a word in a sentence....each album would have 24 tracks totaling 144 new songs!  Some would be super long, and to make room for that, a lot of others would be super short, nasty punk songs with maybe one chorus.

Now to sort of get back on topic....Album 13 should NOT be 3 albums in one.  It SHOULD have more songs on it than the last four records.  12, 13, 12, 12.  Come on guys.  Get creative with your amount of tracks! The last 2 albums have the exact same amount, that's CRAP!

10/12/15/14/18/12/13/18/12/13/12/12

That's an average of 13.41 songs an album.  Get back on that Dookie/Insomniac/Nimrod pattern of freaking amazing albums with more than 13 tracks.  DO IT!  We've got FIVE albums with the old standard 12 tracks and it's driving me slightly mad.

Album 13 - 13 tracks.

It will be interesting to see how they continue to fit new songs into their career.

Check out the first set list by the band according to setlist.fm

https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/green-day/1987/rods-hickory-pit-vallejo-ca-7bd516d4.html

they've definitely changed it up since then! Those 1987-1993 concerts were all over the place, and it looks like the beginning of the 'standard' set list started in 1994, although I've got to say there is more change than one would think.  So "Longview", "Basketcase" and "She" are the Top Three staples of a Green Day show by a landslide.  They started playing those around 1993 or  so and have played them just about every night since!  "Knowledge", "When I Come Around" and "2000 Light Years" have also stuck it through nearly every phase of their career.

Looks like in 1997 the "standard" set got even close to today's, with the "Brainstew" - "Jaded" - "knowledge" - "Basketcase" - "She" part forming and basically staying for 20 years!

But overall, go through their average setlist section on setlist.fm

They've changed it up a lot with the exception of the highly successful hits/covers medley in the middle.

You say STOP and suddenly this thread goes silent.  I don't see Red Lights Flashing so I'ma keep posting.  :)

I was just over on the "overhyped and underdelivered" thread and as the debate about politics spiraled, I got to thinking about good ole' Album 13 again.....

I've never had a problem with Green Day's politics. I think it's fit in nicely with their music and without it Green Day could've gotten annoying really quick, singing about unrequited love from 1039 to present.  Sure Billie has the occasional song about Whatsherface but some guys make a career out of singing about not having a date to their junior prom and that's just garbage.

It's kept them real, as if they needed any help.  But it has.  And the politics have never overpowered the real heart and story of an album, even with Revolution Radio being the most overtly political.

They've been subtle about it, at least as far as songs go.  No Green Day song has once named a politician or anything like that. "Holiday" is probably the most direct, but even it has a wise-crack about democrats crossing the line and finding money on the other side.

MY POINT:

After SEVEN albums, despite the politics only being overt in a few songs - maybe it's time to give it a rest.  Not change their opinions because I agree with Billie on most things.  But just remove it from the band for a while.  I almost feel bad for saying it like that, but I'm not saying don't be political.  I'm just saying they've had a small bit of it in every album from Warning to Rev Rad and Green Day should be exploring other things.  There are other issues on the planet.

I'd be okay with Billie going inward again if he's ready.  I think THAT is what we've all been waiting for.

My name is Billie and I'm freaking out.

I think the songs should be more about issues instead of just generic political songs, like Bang Bang or Say Goodbye

Posted

So this era is possibly over.  Is there any chance we'll get to hear "Outlaws", "Bouncing off the Wall" or "Say Goodbye" live???? What are the statistics for them debuting songs years after they come out?   *researching now*   It does like there is hope.  "Walking Alone" was played for the first time in 2014 - an astounding 17 years after its release.  Unfortunately that's the only one I could track down on short notice, so I don't think they debut songs like that often.

Green Day have done a great job at playing most of their songs at least once.  From the 12 studio records, there are only 11 songs that have been completely, totally ignored.  And the recorded version of "Song of the Century" was played a lot, so that one kind of has been played.

Perhaps they will shift their set lists a bit while on the road for ALBUM 13 to include such tracks from Kerplunk, Insomniac, Dos, Tre and Revolution Radio once in a while.

I'm hoping Album 13 ushers in a new era of Green Day completely.  New sound, new set list, new....banjos!

I agree but I think those two are about issues (gun violence and police brutality). I guess they could be more specific but they're better than a really general one like Revolution Radio :P

Yeah that's what I meant. Songs more like Bang Bang and Say Goodbye. I just phrased it wrong but yeah. I mean songs more like BB and SG
