Yeah, it's not hard to find reasons why they did it... Not sure if there was a falling out, but it's quite likely, it probably wasn't a very good time for them.

It's just not a believable story at all :P, but I guess it doesn't have to be.

There was a falling out but they did talk about it, they said there was a lot of tension and thoughts of ending the band, and they basically realised they still spoke to each other like they were teenagers (one example they gave that I always remember is Tre apparently saying to Billie that Welcome to Paradise was a "shitty song" lol) and needed to give each other more respect and listen to each other. I think it's more that the real story was just that they realised the songs they were working on weren't good enough. They pretty much admitted that as well :lol:, but like you say adding in the mysterious theft bit made it a better story.
