What if Green Day had quit?

Yeah. If for some unfathomable reason Billie did music on his own, I highly doubt he would ever disrespect the other members by continuing to make music under the name Green Day just by himself.

Exactly. He's not so intellectually stunted that he can't think of a different shitty band name. Job done. I have no doubt that over the next 30 years Billie will have many side projects like he does with Pinhead Gunpowder on the go anyway so it won't be a big deal.

well he does write all the songs

I don't wanna get too technical, but the statement had nothing to do with his song writing ability. It was that he's the face that people remember.
As true as that may be with him being front man, I can't see him go on (as Green Day) without Mike and Tre.

Mmmmm, I really highly disagree with this statement.
I don't think (and I really am not 100% sure, but I am almost certain) that I probably wouldn't listen to Green Day if it were JUST Billie and some other replacements.

I figure it would be a problem for most diehard fans but the general public wouldn't give two fucks.

Not all bands have as stable line-up as Green Day, and it's not an issue at all.

Do you even know what a fact is?

Yes.

This topic reminds me of the great article that Green Day posted on Facebook the other day, it said: "If you'd asked for the numbers on the band pulling through in 2013 and 2014, when they were beset by issues and essentially out of action, you might have got 30 per cent they make it and 70 per cent on a press release announcing they had broken up."

And this reminds me of how unbelievably grateful I am that they didn't. They've been on the brink of breaking up before and made it through some tough times, but the crisis in 2012/13 was different. But they made it and grew together as friends and a band even more, I think that's what we can all feel at the live shows right now. I'm pretty damn sure that as long as they love doing what they do (and they obviously love it) and as long as they stay healthy, they will be around for a very long time just like the Stones.

So, to answer your question, if they had broken up after the trilogy, I'd be still mourning their loss. Sad, sad life.

Yes, we've all, or nearly all, gone off topic.  I would be gutted if they had broken up at any point and really, really hope they will be around for a long time yet. They are highly successful, obviously happy and are 45, sometimes it sounds like people think they are about 90!  Quite happy for side projects, charity work, coffee companies, you name it, am fascinated by what they'll do next.

It's not the kind of music I normally like but I like the album. And it's really cool he did something like that, it's my grandparents' kind of music and I think it's absolutely cool that there is something Green Day-related for them to enjoy.

To me, that was the best thing about Foreverly - the fact that it gave people who don't listen to Green Day, especially older people, a chance to appreciate Billie's work as a musician.

I feel like some of you are not taking into account the reality that everything has to end at some point. Try for a second to imagine them as 70 year olds, still playing shows regularly. Then think about the fact that it is three different people who must all find satisfaction in sacrificing their time and energy into the band. As one said, Green Day is Billie Joe's life - that and his family probably - which is totally understandable as he is the brain behind Green Day in many ways. He writes the songs and most of the music, and is their face outwards to the world. It is his thoughts that are projected out to the public, and so he's bound to be really invested. Mike and Tré on the other hand, they have different roles. Important roles yes, but don't you think that playing bass or being a drummer gets redundant after 30 years? I'm not saying that they don't enjoy playing in Green Day, but don't you think that they would want to do something else with their time, now that they have the money and opportunities to go into another business? Out of the three guys, you see that Mike and Tré are pursuing other things outside the music industry, where Billie Joe mostly stays within it - doing solo collabs, writing for musicals and doing the odd acting job on the side.

What I'm getting at is, yes Billie Joe will probably do music until he's not physically able to do so anymore, but isn't it highly unrealistic for Green Day to keep putting out records and going on tour? At some point, don't you think other things in life will call to them? I'm not saying an official split, but that they will not keep going like this for very much longer.

I think that they will still be around when they are 70. Obviously, they probably won't release as many albums, or play as many shows, but I think they will still be around and they will still be making music and enjoying it.

Also, I think Billie does more outside of Music than Tre does.

The only person needed for Green Day to exist is Billie Joe. That's a fact. Everyone else is replaceable but he's the face people remember.

I agree that a lot of people will remember Green Day as Billie Joe. However, I really don't think Mike and Tre are replaceable. Green Day could exist without them, but I don't think Billie would continue it without them. As we all know, Billie is a very loyal person. He's been best friends with Mike for 35 years, he's been in Green Day for 30 years, he's been friends with Tre and Jason for 27 years, and he's been married to Adrienne for 23 years. If he continued Green Day without Mike or Tre, I don't think he would enjoy it. To him, Green Day is him and his two best friends doing what they love the most - making music together. He wouldn't want to change that.

The other time GD could have ended was 2012.

Billie Joe could easily have choked on his own vomit when he got very drunk.

I really wish they would include more songs written by Mike or Tre on their albums. I love Billie's songs, but J.A.R and Haha You're Dead were both written by Mike and, in my opinion, they are two of the best Green Day songs.

I don't think he'd want to do that, but it would be possible.

I honestly think that the only reason that Green Day would ever break up would be if something serious happened to one of them.

Possible, but highly unlikely.

I wonder what would've happened if Billie had died in the summer 2012 due to his alcoholism?

Would Mike and Tre have released the trilogy in Billie's honour?

It could've had mainstream success, just as Amy Winehouse music had a spike in success oafter her death

i wonder if Mike and Tre would do anything in his honour - would they do a show together ever again?

That's a bit morbid. :ermm:

I do think that Mike and Tre would have released the trilogy in Billie's honour. They would want the world to hear his last pieces of music and be proud of him and celebrate his life.

Obviously, they wouldn't continue on as Green Day and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't try to replace Billie. They would probably have got together for a show on Green Day's anniversary or the anniversary of Billie's death or something like that.

Billie is alive and GD is still making great music!
