When i began listening to green day shortly after american idiot can out when i was 9, i bought the album and my mom listened to some of the songs on it and absolutely hated it. I remember her looking at me and telling me what "horrible lyrics" they had. Not horrible as in poorly written but horrible as in she basically thought they were bad people trying to be a bad influence on the listeners. I'm not sure what my dad thought, though i know he doesn't like them now. My brother hated them too and thought they were immature and people trying to be cool. He actually one day took my american idiot cd and scratched it up so i couldn't listen to it anymore. I remember he even made a home movie with his friend that was supposed to mock skateboarders who make those really cheesy skate videos(though it was honestly pretty funny). But he purposely used st jimmy as the soundtrack for it because he wanted to use "a song that sounded real bratty." In middle school and high school a lot of kids knew me as that kid who loved green day and i took a lot of crap for it. Even though the other asshole kids would bring up green day to mock me more than i ever brought the band up in normal conversation.

Oh my god that's mostly horrible but honestly makes me laugh how people can see them that way. Kids (all ages) can be cruel! Hope GD have brought you some joy too over the years :D

Green day and my family don't mix well. My aunt and uncle have also briefly mentioned them in the past and said they thought they were horrible. Even though i know if i had my family members listen to a green day song without them knowing, there are several they would each like.

In an age where the majority of teenagers are into pop and rap music, most people at school think it's strange that I enjoy rock/punk, in particular Green Day. (There is a small group of us though that couldn't care less what others think and listen to whatever the hell we like because that's who we are! )

As for my family. My brother frequently comes into my room while I'm listening to a GD record and implies that I'm an emo. I just tell him that it shouldn't matter if I am or am not, who is he to define the person I am?! My dad continuously makes fun of Green Day (calling them losers etc - I have the pleasure of being accompanied to the Dublin gig with him in June :P) and my mom just rolls her eyes (although one time whilst listening to AI, she came into my room and began dancing to St Jimmy)

My mom thinks I'm crazy, but likes the band. Girlfriend likes it, but doesn't get it, makes sense, she can't relate to it. Nobody in my family gets it, they don't see why I like them so much or that it has kept me alive and breathing all these years! Doesn't matter, I like having the personal feeling of loving them and not having others understand. Like Jesus Of Seneca said in his post, they don't have a choice, so they better just do themselves a favor and try to enjoy it! Will be a very Green Day year.

My parents don't mind Listening to green day. My dad enjoyed holiday back when i was still in high school. My Brother has been to 2/3 shows with me. and is coming with me to my next 2 (London and Toronto) ,my sister probably was sick of me playing them when i was in high school ,and my 2 best friends are each joining me for 1 show (tickets are there birthday gifts). as for my boyfriend he doesn't care. he wasn't interesting in going to any of the shows (including the cancelled Toronto gig :() I'm okay with him not being into them.. i try to to let my fangirling get to over the top. (though he bought me some GD vinyl for Christmas) ,though we hadn't started dating when the trilogy was released. now we live together.

It's interesting to reminisce. When I was a teenager and my love for them was perhaps more apparent, my dad would try to lecture me about why I couldn't put the same effort into liking Green Day into other more life-related things. At the same time, he likes them casually. I think he only ever owned Nimrod and/or Dookie and for a little bit he had this "I knew them first" ageism thing going. A good story about this, though, is that he took me to see them for the first time in 2009. I told him on the way there "This will without a doubt be the greatest concert you have ever been to." Of course, he blew it off and was like "Yeah ok. I've been to a lot of concerts so whatever." On the way home, he agreed that it was the best concert he had ever been to.

Beyond those anecdotes, there's nothing else interesting. I keep it mostly to myself. Although I will say that...either with my age or with them being less public, I am a lot less nervous or "embarrassed" about naming them as my favorite band than I used to be.

Me and my sister love Green Day, and we saw them live a month ago. :)

My mom liked them back in the day, but she grew out of them recently.

My brother likes a few of their songs but he's not that into them.

My dad knows Green Day but he doesn't listen to them. But he's fine with their songs though!

But they all think that Rev Rad is a great record. :)

I became a fan when I was 13 (the Dookie era) and at that time, if I told anyone at school I would actually get called a freak so I ended up keeping quiet about it for a long time. I got my taste in music from my Dad and I got a lot of grief for it growing up. Growing up I was listening to things like David Bowie, Queen, The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Ramones etc and when I heard Green Day for the first time I was hooked. My Dad likes what he's heard of them, my mum doesn't get my fascination with them at all but has admitted she really likes Still Breathing. My husband absolutely despises them lol. The only people in my life that like them are my sister in law, niece and thankfully my two sons (who have inherited mine and their grandad's taste in music).

I'm at the point now in my life though that I really don't care what other people think though so pretty much everyone I know now knows I love them

Nobody really cares for them enough to sit down and listen to them properly, except maybe my dad.
My almost 3 year old (believe it or not) is diggin' RevRad hard right now. She sings along to Still Breathing, Say Goodbye and most recently Somewhere Now.
It's slowly working... corrupting her little mind!

Awesome!! :) I pretty much developed my own taste. My mom is fans of Metallica, Guns n' Roses, Faith No More, Chopin, and etc when it comes with her music taste. While my dad likes George Michael the most! :)

For me personally that would be reason enough for a divorce  I can't be friends with people who hate Green Day

Yeah my mum's more of the George Michael, Pet Shop Boys type stuff lol. I will listen to most music depending what I'm in the mood for but I do have my favourites :)

I've been tempted many times  nah my husband isn't that into music at all really but he does support me in what I like. He doesn't have an issue with me going to gigs or playing music as long as I don't drag him along  He'll even listen to me going on about them so its not too bad.

Ah, well  As long as he doesn't constantly remind you how much he dislikes them when you bring them up, then I guess it can't be too bad :P

No the most he says is when I'm playing their music is 'not this headbanging stuff again' I have to try and keep reminding him that he's younger than me and saying that just makes him sound like an old man

Haha that's cool. :) Nice, I do the same. I can pretty much listen to anything depending on my current mood. ;)

But my top 6 artists of all time are Green Day, Blink-182, Sum 41, Avril Lavigne, Patent Pending, and New Found Glory. :D

I do like all of those. I don't think I could choose a top 6, a top 3 would be Green Day, Queen and David Bowie, after that there are too many I like to be able to name them :D

Awesome! Sweet, David Bowie and Queen are great too. :D Haha I totally understand that. When it comes with listing my favorite bands, there are just way many to mention!

That's horrible, but a little funny. Actually those last two sentences are my life to a T :P

Yaknow, the funny thing about that is whenever I meet people at school and they say they appreciate the punk and rock stuff, and then I'll never hear them ever listen to anything remotely like it. Or they're just in the straight up shit music camp, or they're in the camp of, they'res no good rock after the 80's/ 70's. They're are literally only 3 people in my school that completely understand/ appreciate/ share my taste in music, and two of them are teachers

Until i started writing that post, i didn't realize how many people around me tried to get me to stop listening to green day. I have a few friends now who like them though.

Most people I know are very supportive of my love for GD. None of my friends like them a whole lot, but they don't hate them. My mom likes Green Day quite a bit. She actually recognizes their songs and likes listening to them. And she always calls me to say when she sees one of the guys on TV or heard their song in the store. She's always on the lookout for any GD shirts and she's actually picked up a few of their albums for me. Also, she thinks Billie is hot so, she never had a problem with GD on the TV 24/7

My gf likes them okay enough. She doesn't listen to them regularly, but she does like American Idiot a lot and she puts up with a lot of GD in the house. She actually went to see them with me and said it was a really fun show. She'd like to see them again :D

I have never had any friends who have been fans, they have liked a couple of songs (singles) at most but that's it. Infact I have never had friends who have been big fans of music at all, no matter kind. No music oriented fandoms whatsoever. Which saddens me a bit sometimes

My love for Music and foremost, my beloved Green Day has always been met with a healthy dose of sceptism from newcomers or people who are less close to me. Like it's odd or even childish to have a favourite band, who you go to see in concert more than once in your life or the fact that you know their bio and full names. I even got a ton of shit thrown at me when I took a leave from school to go to a few shows in this tour. Mainly because I apparently had money to spend on something to ridiculos, of course while wearing an outfit that could have paid for my entire fucking England trip. :fuckyou:

My family is different. Bruce Springsteen is the house god and there is a lot of love for rock n roll in our house. Always have been. They like Green Day and the band has become a part of the collection because of me. My siblings are huge and passionate fans of music, but they don't have their number one band or album, neither has my mom.

My dad, however, has loved and adored Springsteen for the past 40+ years of his life. It's his number one, always. The soundtrack of his entire life so to speak. And that is Green Day to me. So me and dad have some common ground in this, having your number one. Watching pretty much the same concert night after night, because it's always great and it's always magical and it's your conncetion. You listen to the same albums all the time because they don't wear out to you. They're yours, in a way. So I think if anyone really gets my love for Green Day it's my old man

My Mom says she's heard a few of their old songs, said they were "okay" :P And every time I wear a GD shirt, my Dad asks what in the world they are, and my brother claims to not like them, but you can hear him singing Boulevard of Broken Dreams all the time.

Posted

My family all quite like them as well (though nowhere near as much as me). My mom, dad, two sisters, and brother in law have seen them at various shows with me including Birmingham, Wembley Stadium, Emirates Stadium, Reading Fest, and are all coming to Hyde Park. My one sister is coming with me to California in August to see them in Oakland!

My friends all say I'm obsessed but my 3 closest friends came with me to some of the UK shows last week and LOVED them!

My coworkers think I'm mad going to all the shows but love it! I was a little worried about asking my manager for the week off last week to go see them in Leeds, Manchester, and London as it was an inconvenient time with work (I work in schools and it was during school time) but he encouraged me and said I should go to as many shows as I can and that if I run out of holiday I can, if I want to, take time off unpaid.

A lot of my friends love Green Day. My best friend and I are massive fans and anytime they've played in Scotland I've always gone with her. So yeah. It's more GDC that people get confused over.

'Who is that you're talking to?'

'Aw a friend from GDC'

'...what?'
