My favorite songs live are the ones that are not extended by 5-10 minutes. :D

Same. That's the way Ramones used to think. 2 minutes songs, no interruptions. We absolutely need the raw power of Insomniac... BOBD is so weak live. Worst song of the concert in my opinion. It could be easily replaced with 86 (put in the middle of the setlist, maybe before Scattered)...

This doesn't apply to suites like JOS and the best GD live song ATM, Forever Now.

Agreed. So they did Amy tonight, but not in full?

Welcome to Paradise is up there at the top for me. I just love the break in the middle, it's phenomenal!

I also love Hitchin', EJN, 21CB, JoS, Scattered, Stuart (despite how little it's been played!) and She

:o how dare you!! I love BOBD live, it's beautiful, and when he lets the audience sing...

My favourite songs to hear live include Holiday, Burnout, Hitchin A Ride, Brain Stew (I hope they still do the flames for the ending? I LOVED that), and, yes, KFAD :tired: Tbh everything sounds good to me because of the whole experience of being there  21CB sounded amazing as an opener as well.

Like 15 seconds or so :P

I liked Good Riddance and 2000 LYA most from tonights setlist. SWTRLF is also one good ass song to hear live.

Even when they were touring Insomniac they dragged songs out to 10-15 minutes though :P (for example check out Paper Lanterns from that time). They've always done it that way, messing around doing extra stuff and involving the crowd. If they just blasted through songs it wouldn't be Green Day and they'd just be the same as every other punk band.

I like the dragging out of songs as a Green Day trademark though. It's a sign of their showmanship - dragging out the bit before the last chorus because they know the crowd will go nuts, or using it as an interlude to address/connect with the crowd. It's not unlike the way Michael Jackson used to pause at the start of songs for ages, because it builded anticipation, or Queen is another example. I love their dedication to making a show an event rather than just playing the songs and then leaving. (Though of course I'd still be happy with that, lol)

Don't most bands tend to drag out songs alot?  At least most of the bands I've seen do.  I saw the Allman Brothers band once and they played the intro to Jessica for 20 min.  That was a bit much, but I think it is pretty standard for any band to do that

Yep pretty common to extend songs to fit a certain time frame

Yeah a lot of big rock bands make songs take a long time. Although it tends to be in ways that Green Day have made fun of before, like with "15 minute cocaine wank guitar fests". Green Day do it in ways that I find a lot more entertaining. I mean, they're one of the best live acts of all time so stopping doing what they do in favour of just playing through songs like any random band doesn't seem like the best idea to me :P. Seems to be a popular suggestion but I don't see the appeal.

I remember reading a GW back in the 90's and had a band of the metal scene talking if they didn't like the crowds or they were in a pissy mood they'd just extend songs and just jam out or make useless noise just to end the show faster

Wait, I'm not saying "play 28 songs in 56 minutes" (like in the Ramones' live album "It's Alive"). I just think they could drop songs like BOBD (that live lose their potential) and make like a "middle part" with songs from Kerplunk/Dookie/Insomniac with no interruptions. But that's it, 6/7 songs. The rest of the show should be the way you (and we all) like it. Because as you said GD are unique. :)

My young friend, how many concerts have you been too?  Jamming out and extending songs is very common.  I honestly don't recall seeing any concert where the band did not do that.  Plus, to me, it actually makes the concert more fun.  There is nothing worse than going to a concert and they play the songs just like they are on the album.  I've gone to concerts like that and I've actually fallen asleep at one.  Changing a song up makes it more exciting.  Now they are not going to do that with every song, but it just makes it more fun to do it with some.

Them not doing BOBD?  The chances of them dropping one of their most successful songs for some older songs is slim.  Plus, they already do quite a bit of Dookie.

Fair enough :). I think they already kind of do that in a round about way though. They have the songs they extend but they do rip through some as well, especially the older ones. Looking at a recent setlist it seems those ones are quite spread out at the moment but there's been times when they've done them more in a row like you suggest. When I've seen them there's been a pretty good mix of extended songs and quick songs, the way they've planned it out I've always been really caught up in it and it never seemed like it dragged on.

Like looking at this of course there's some that they drag out but there's a lot they play straight through too:

How many metal shows have you been to then? Metal bands never have time in a set for that shit actually. They don't take breaks, or mess around too much generally. Not in thrash anyway! Personally, I prefer it done live the way it is on the album because then I can see how well they perform it. AND, then they'd have time to play a few more songs instead of messing around for a bit which is really taking a break. :D

Even if they are doing it just like the album, the live sound is a bit different every time and the energy levels are never the same because people are people, so it would still be just as interesting night to night.

A few of my favorites are/were The Grouch (so much energy and emotions), BOBD (I loved the song the very first time heard it and I really relate to it), Minority, Stuart and the Avenue (It was the first song the played the very first time I saw them... ironically was also my first concert), Hitchin' A ride, EJN, and DLS/ABM (gotta love Tre).

Pasalacqua live is so good compared to the studio version. Obviously cause of the lacking quality on 39/ smooth. The guitar just punches through so well.

SWTRLF so fast, so raw especially that bridge build up. Just watch the Reading performance for it. So great

Brutal Love one of the best endings to a concert, billies voice outstanding.

21CB best opener and I don't think any song will be as good as a show opener. The build up progression is just perfect "green day" show

Brain Stew. I don't even like the song that much but the live versions are always amazing, and were especially so on the American Idiot tour.
