11 of Green Day’s most unforgettable moments

From mud fights to pyromania that would make a firefighter sweat to launching secretive side projects shrouded in denial to landing the story of a disenchanted suburban kid on Broadway, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool have done it all in their 30 years as a band. Here are some of their most unforgettable moments.

I haven't seen this here, so there you go, Green Day on the next Kerrang!

My Barnes & Noble hasn't put out a new Kerrang in like two months.  So they carry it, but just not in a timely fashion, it would seem.

Been the same way for me with Rolling Stone. Haven't seen a Rolling Stone magazine in stock for weeks... :P Which sucks, because if I remember right, Green Day was on the cover, and I haven't seen a single copy anywhere haha

Same. I went to B&N tonight and couldn't find Rolling Stone! :(

In Defense of Green Day

Green Day doesn’t suck. You suck.

Punk as Fuck is a monthly column in which Collin Brennan discusses issues in punk music and culture. With Green Day releasing their new single, “Bang Bang”, on Thursday, this month’s column makes a case for the band’s continued relevance and explores how they’ve survived the “sell out” tag at every stage of their career

You know those folks who always piss and moan about their favorite bands “selling out”? They’re usually the same safety-pinned crusaders who balk at paying $10 for a house show because, well, it’s real easy to exist outside capitalism when mom’s the one cutting monthly rent checks. The next time you encounter one of these lovely people, offer them a penny for their thoughts onGreen Day.

You’ll likely be met with a spittle-laced tirade against posers and mall punk and bullshit Broadway musicals, because no band wears the dreaded “sell out” tag more brazenly than Green Day. This is the band that got 86’d from Berkeley’s 924 Gilman for signing onto a major and then wrote a fucking song about it. But that was just the warm-up pitch. Among the thousands of other ways Green Day have supposedly betrayed their fans, there’s thatcommercial they filmed for Rhapsody, their ill-fated partnership with iHeartRadio, and that one song that’s played at every graduation and wedding reception since 1997.

It would be one thing if Green Day had quietly renounced their punk credibility back when they put out 1994’s Dookieand sailed off into a sunset of cocaine and cashmere bathrobes. But nearly every artistic decision Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool have made in the subsequent two decades seems to openly mock the very idea of punk credibility. They’veexperimented with folk rock and written straight-faced songs about going to church on Sunday. They’ve lined their eyes with mascara and booked sold-out tours in Asia and written not one buttwo punk-rock operas, both of which scoff at the notion that punk must be short, fast, and to the point.

Here's a cool little video about underrated GD songs. Seems like this guy is a huge GD fan and has covered them in other videos.

I'm sorry to hear that. What's the reason? If you don't mind me asking.
Hope you are well, after all.

Jup. B-sided aren't what they used to be (see American Idiot with Too Much Too Soon).

Yeah, I get that people don't often buy physical singles these days so B-sides mean less but it'd be nice to have something that good.

Indeed. I get it, but I'd still like to hear some bonus tracks which didn't make the cut (even if they're in the vein of Youngblood). Know Your Enemy had Lights Out and Hearts Collide (two very underrated songs, particularly the former).

Oh yeah, Lights Out is fantastic. I even think Governator is underrated, they've always had such quality in B-sides.

Certainly. More than a couple of the earlier ones ended up on Shenanigans. I'd be surprised if at least Japan does not get a bonus track on their CD version.
