Sonjj Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 I think billies voice has been a bit dry during revolution radio area. Its so sad that the performance has only been watched like 40k times.

Hero_Of_The_Hour Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 Assumption - Billie is "emotional" and "nervous" Fact - Billie sounds bad

jabharty Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 Has anyone worked out why he wears his guitar during Still Breathing every time he plays?

They were on Jimmy Kimmel about 3 weeks ago performing Bang Bang and Revolution Radio. Kimmel has like 8 million subscribers on YouTube and Bang Bang has been on the charts for so long, yet only 100,000 people have watched GD's performance on his show

I think it's a barrier of sorts - I believe the first time they played it he didn't wear it, but has since. Maybe he feels weird without it?

For songs in the past where he has not played guitar (e.g. St jimmy) they are fast songs and he can run around the stage like a lunatic. Still breathing is a lot slower so he couldn't really do that, so he'd just be standing there singing. There would be nothing wrong with that either but my guess would be that Billie does not feel comfortable just standing there singing, having the guitar around him is probably just a comfort thing.
Thatsername Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 There seems to be something really strange about the sound quality in the studio. We've definitely seen better performances of that song, but I think we shouldn't read too much into this. SB is a really tough song to sing, not only for Billie's voice, but also for his psyche. The situation is completely different than with any other song, even WMUWSE. When you've experience some life-threatening shit like this not so long ago, it is hard to even speak about it. Unfortunately I know it from my own experience. I can't imagine how hard it must be to sing about it in front of a big (TV-) audience. Plus we have to consider the fact that Billie used to perform drunk / under the influence of pills which took away a lot of his nervouseness. He even said that in many recent interviews. I really don't wanna know what kind of storm is happening inside of him from time to time now that he's performing sober, especially when it comes to such a personal song. I admire this guy for his bravery to sing SB, which is - in my opinion - the most personal and honest song he's ever written. I understand why he's nervous. And I wouldn't worry too much, we well see better performances of SB in the future, I'm absoutely sure!
letsdanceon Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 Y'all are making a lot of sense to me. Glad I'm not the only one who didn't think it was awful and who thinks it has a lot to do with Billies mental/emotional state when performing it.

Imo, when he doesn't play he tends to make weird gestures.
PursuitOfEpicness Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 I actually was surprised how he did not do as well on the verses but did better on the higher notes in the chorus. Overall I enjoyed it.
BilIie Joe Armstrong Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 I haven't watched the SB performance yet so I can't judge, all I can say is that Billie's singing on that song usually isn't his most perfect but it's never really bothered me. It sounds less polished than the album version and maybe thanks to it I can see some emotion in it. When I heard the studio version, I thought SB was a quite cliched song and even though I liked it musically, I didn't really get what all the fuss was about. It's grown on me a lot since I heard the live versions.
Mar Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 It wasn't their best but it was OK. Nice that they got exposure to a less-traditonal audience.
Heather. Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 Anyone else watch SB and think "This is bad, but I kinda like it better?" I'm with Andres in saying I don't think he was "overcome with emotion"... perhaps a little nervous about being on Daytime TV (but I honestly doubt it), but mostly just, as y'all have said, it's a tough song to sing and BJA, while I love his voice and he has improved a lot over the last ten years, has never been a "singer" singer.
stories and songs Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 At my concert he didn't wear the guitar while singing SB, and he looked so damn cool. I think it's a comfort thing, which I totally understand, but he genuinely looked like a badass frontman without it, imo. It wasn't awkward at all, but he may have felt that way. Personally, I appreciate the vulnerability and nervousness that shows whenever he performs this song. He's always an absolute rockstar on stage, but when it comes to this song, that stage presence drops a bit and he just goes back to being a person singing about something deeply emotional. By the end of this performance I felt choked up.
petros Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 Man what are you guys talking about sb sounded good. If we're to be bashing something this should be american idiot cause it was too slow and they seemed to have no energy while playing it. And that's normal that's a song they've been playing for 12 years now how can they still feel as they did while playing it? Just odd they decided to perform that song.
lizziebix Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 Ok, maybe not their very best performance, but it was still very fun to watch.
The Grohl Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 I just watched it last night and I thought both performances were a little off, but it's okay. I do think he may have been nervous and maybe just flat out tired. I guess we don't really know when this was recorded but they've been doing a lot of promo for RevRad. It's not the first time Billie's been a little worn out. But I loved seeing it and I loved that shirt he was wearing Also it was fun to see all the painfully obvious moms jamming to GD. Some knew who they were, others seemed like they were being polite

Because when I watched that performance it seemed like they were having a great time. Jumping around and a bit of yelling, I thought it had a lot more energy than when they performed it 12 years ago on Letterman

gnash Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 Confused by some of the comments on here, Still Breathing sounded far less off-key to me here than it did on the other proshot videos of it and of other live versions I've heard. Voice still isn't at 21CB levels but it seemed solid enough to me

It didn't sound as bad during the live shows because the audience drowned it out a bit

Billie Joe and his band, Green Day, may have just put out their last album. Billie was trying to seek the fountain of youth and was unfortunately not able to find it. This performance was hard to watch. Green Day has washed up and will hang it up. The next 2 albums Reprise and GD will put out are B-sides, the 'lost' Cigarettes and Valentines songs, etc. ... Awesome fucking band but, in your heart of hearts, (after watching GD on Ellen) can you really see Billie Joe and Green Day going on another world tour after RevRad? Peace and Love. Illuminati. You gotta be kidding me? Billie and the gang were so friggin' awesome on the show! Oh please. You're just an attention seeking whore with you're crass posts. I hope you F.O.D.
