With no AI the massive world tour probably wouldn't have happened, or all the award shows and interviews and stuff. Which means they probably would have returned to the studio sooner and maybe rushed out another album or two. Perhaps they'd be in a Bowling For Soup type situation, maybe doing fan-funded albums eventually. I definitely think they'd keep making music and doing shows because they seem to genuinely love doing it regardless of success.
Second favourite son Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 It would really depend what Green Day had done instead of release American idiot - they were in a place in their careers where they could have done anything from re-record C&V to go in a different, non-AI direction, continue touring playing old songs perpetually, or just call it a day and work in offices. I'm so glad they made AI, my life would be pretty damn different without it. I'd probably be listening to Bieber right now
platypus136 Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 Well, this album is probably the most well known album because of the songs Holiday, American Idiot or Wake me up when September ends Green Day would probably not be so famous without these songs.
Ric503 Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 If they hadn't released it probably I wouldn't know them and probably hadn't been in to music and I couldn't play guitar or bass. Or maybe not because I love some songs that are suposed to be from C&V but I got into them because someone showed me the AI video that was trending all over the world
Jesus of Seneca Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 I'd be dead. They'd be dead. We'd all be dead. Bye bye. *meanwhile seagull is king of the world.....
Cunt Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 4 hours ago, Steven Seagull said: I don't see what's bad about that. Since Warning Uno, Dos and Tre were the only good albums Green Day released and the rest were so awful. What alternate universe did you come from that those albums were actually good? I mean sure they are fun to listen to every once in a while, but my god man. If they never released American idiot Green Day would probably be playing small theaters and clubs right now. Or they might not even be a band at this point.
Maddie86 Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 I feel like they'd have a career similar to Weezer if it weren't for AI
St. Jonny Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 They would probably still be going, but yeah in clubs and stuff. The odd festival like someone said, they would obviously not be as well off and would be quite torn down by now. Like a ton of 80's underground metal bands they would still be doing it out of necessity. I would like to see what it would be like to be honest. Would be a lot easier to get to the guys but they would play and tour more knowing that they had to. I'm stoned as hell, this is weird to think about, they knew they had to change 'cause they didn't like that type of show life. Being your own roadie, chasing your pay, dealing with crazy people right in your face and barely scraping by to get to the next show is tough. They got lucky, changed everything for the better, and made some amazing records as they went on. They have the touring lifestyle they deserve and a comfortable and stable life thanks to the things they changed. Best part is, now they are back to their roots musically for the most part and their is so much good shit to look back on. They keep pulling out old shit which is great.
End Of The World Posted November 27, 2016 Author Posted November 27, 2016 Of course, (I forgot to write) the main single of the hypothetical album would have been Cigarettes and Valentines. Hands up who would like to have a studio version of that (beautiful) song, that we actually don't have. Maybe that could have change their career. Maybe not.

I don't think it would've done anything for them really. It might've done pretty well but I doubt it would've done better than Minority which was actually a fairly successful single But I'd love to see a studio version of that song. The live version is great though
I don't care Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 Is it weird that my first thought was that "wow, that hilarious FB live stream thread wouldn't have existed"?

Especially since the sound didn't work for, like, 30 seconds... But, to keep this on topic. Almost all of you make good points (key word being almost @Steven Seagull). Everything would've been different. AI was a major change of direction for Green Day and that's also when I started loving them. Wow. Scary thought.
BilIie Joe Armstrong Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 What if they would record soemthing else and equally good.

End Of The World Posted November 27, 2016 Author Posted November 27, 2016 It's so annoying when a normal discussion turns into the "Trilogy discussion". Trilogy has its own thread. Please stop.

Christian's Inferno! Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 Just now, Steven Seagull said: Why not? Don't understand your logic. Well GD might have gone in a different direction if they didn't create AI and might not have ever ended up making these albums. The key word here is "might". We don't know what would've happened if they never made AI. So even though you dislike AI and 21CB, you did get 3 albums worth of material that you enjoy, which you might not have gotten if they went in a different direction. So how about instead of constantly hating on those albums, just be happy that you got 3 albums that you enjoy and it might've been because of AI 21 minutes ago, End Of The World said: It's so annoying when a normal discussion turns into the "Trilogy discussion". BilIie Joe Armstrong Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 Or take a deep breath and say "I won't feed the troll" and repeat until your urge to quote him stops.

bouncingoffthewallbja Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 This is really hard for me to contemplate and think about. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore the AaF recording of C&V, but American Idiot was one of those albums that changed my life for the better and kinda made me who I am today. It made me feel like I have a voice and that making my opinion heard is perfectly acceptable! It was just the sort of album that people needed back in 2004 and the fact that it is still relevant 12 years later is phenomenal. In fact, I'm just about to order my AI t-shirt!!!!!
