As an old school guy it was between Armatage and Burnout but I went with Burnout, can't beat that subtle heavy ass intro. Really hard to choose! Closer went with Walking Contradiction, video is killer and nobody was voting for it.

I did. :D

Agree, the video is epic.

21st Century Breakdown it's amazing as opener, and considering that 21stCB is one of my favourite album I have no doubt on choosing it, for the closer, Whatsername... It's just perfect.
I remember the first time listening to American Idiot, when that song came in play and finished I was like "Oh, I have no words for this", you don't even have the courage to put the record on play again because it's just perfect with that end and the silence that follows the song it's what you need to really understand what you just listened... Ahahah I don't know what I'm saying just feelings xD

21st Century Breakdown is probably my favorite opener. But Brutal Love wins out simply because I think it's the most beautiful song they've ever made. It is emotional and powerful and rather unexpected coming from them.

Whatsername for a closer. I think that's such an underrated song. It's quietly powerful, and sums up the album so well.

My favorite opener is Song of the century but since it isn't on the list I voted for See you tonight. Both are the kind of intros I love for the start of an album. For the closer I chose Whatsername because that song really gives me a feeling that I need to hear the album again.

FOD isn't the closer it's All By Myself 😂

Shouldn't it be the Judge's Daughter instead of I Want To Be Alone? Just cause 1039/SOSH was a compilation.

Brutal Love is the opener for Tre, but you'd be forgiven for thinking it's a closer - it's perfect for a closer but for some odd reason they made it the first song! :tired:

You know what, that was totally my initial impression when I listened to Tre recently too. I even like, double checked my itunes settings because I was certain that it couldn't possibly be an opener. However, after some consideration I realized why it fits. You have to look at all three in the context of the thematic storyline that Billie discussed- the start of the party, the party gets dark and dangerous, the hungover redemption. So with that last one, with that opening riff, you can almost imagine it like someone opening their eyes the next morning, bleary, disoriented, totally not awake. Everything is slow and delayed as you try to make your way home. The song progresses, you're more awake, and shouting for salvation as you climb out of the mess, but it's all still a bit wobbly and uneasy.

I don't know, when you look at the story that they were trying to build, it makes a lot of sense. On its own, I think the reasoning behind it gets lost.

I was all by myself.  No one was looking.  I was thinking of you.  I had an erection.  I was all by myself.

I could keep going or just put the video here - but that is the best closer.  Jaded in Chicago got introduced to Mr. Tre Cool that night....  Obama was from Chicago.  hmmm, Illuminati.

American Idiot is perfect as an opener because it's so in your face and loud. Although, if they had kept the melody from the demo for 21CB I would have considered that as well.

Favorite closer is tied between Whatsername and Macy's Day Parade, both are nice relaxing songs to end albums of varying sounds and ideas. I seem to prefer more mellow songs as closers, most of my favorite albums have that in common.

Opener: Somewhere Now

Closer: F.O.D (I know all by myself is the real closer, but F.O.D is too good.)

This one was tough!

I chose 21st Century Breakdown as my favourite opener because that tour was so amazing and if I listen to it and close my eyes I can still picture it.

Favourite closer I chose Amy. This song rings true for me because I was a similar age to AW when I was told that if I didn't stop drinking I'd be dead in a year!

@crock6000, the thread's about studio album openers/closers. I like your post though. :D

Fuck me. I need to lay off the weed. It's definitely making me forgetful but now I think I'm going dumb!

Damn, I felt so righteous! ;)

In that case I vote for Somewhere Now and will make a vote on the poll. Sorry. :-x

Haha! It's still interesting though, the difference between a good gig open/close and a good album open/close. I think Somewhere Now would be a good opener gig-wise as well though.

I'm wondering how much votes Forever Now would have gotten as an album closer. Personally I think that Green Day's second to last songs (Good Riddance, Homecoming, American Eulogy) are more memorable than their closers and that their openers are usually very strong? I don't regard See You Tonight as an opener, though. It's an intro in the vein of Song of the Century. It might have been better to put Fuck Time in the poll.

Personal question but are you relating to RevRad with the same emotion as Amy?

Things I relate to most about RevRad are "Outlaws" (there's a sort of deep, haunting sadness about it - almost melancholic - maybe I'm interpreting it wrongly but I see wasted youth boozing and the like and now getting older?); then the last couple of verses of Still Breathing (as in the CD booklet at least):

I'm like a mother barely keeping it together
Oh, I'm still alive As I walked out on the ledge

Are you scared to death to live?
I've been running all my life
Just to find a home that's for the restless
And the truth that's in the message
Making my way, away, away

Lastly "Too Dumb to Die": "and I hated all the new trends"; "Too scared to dream" "Too Dumb to Die". That's harder to explain. You'll have to forgive me I'm not very good at putting what I want to say in written words but hope that makes some kind of sense!

Amy was more clear cut - AW was 27 when she died and I was 28 when I was told I had to stop or I'd be dead in a year!

I don't disagree about Somewhere Now being a good opener as it starts mellow but jams out on my favorite lyric of the album.

To be fair, when I and most people I know here the word opener and closer although it makes perfect sense in the meaning of the word it's usually referred to in a live setting.

That said, Green Day usually like track one to be a rager as they do their first LIVE ;) opener. That's why I pointed pit they've been one and the same going back to at least AI.

They departed from that on this tour because although I agree it would make a good opener, I don't think SN would ever be an opener but it's the first track because it does jam out and he wanted to book end it with FN.

I actually wish they put OW not last and ended on FN and their were discussions about it "I can tell you that right now". :)

Whete the fuck is @Bastard of 1967? He makes me feel less goofy for being a straight up adult (and not the BS 18 adult) fanboy.

Still here, guy!!

Breakdown for the opener because it's damn perfection, both for setting up the album it was on and opening live sets.  It won't have an equal.

For the closer I was thinking about trolling y'all and choosing Oh Love for the hell of it, but I'll go with Ordinary World.  Especially after Forever Now's epic, layered-vocals climax transitions into the final, gentle acoustic reprise of Somewhere Now, Ordinary World "coasts it out" into a gentle, poignant finish.  It's also well-placed at the end of the album, with BJ asking essentially "How can I possibly still find some meaning, some purpose, some sanity, while living immersed in all this crazy shit we have going on"? ...and then he answers it: Love the people you share your life with.  Puts a bittersweet smile on my face every time I listen to it.

Figured Warning would end up being the weakest opener. Great song, just a weak opener. Macy's Day Parade on the other hand is an amazing closer, one of the best by far.

I think Warning is a great opener, just not as good as some of the others. It doesn't stand out compared to the other openers.

My opener was between American Idiot and Brunout . I went with Brunout because of  the opening lyrics "I declare I don't care no more. And also how punchy and fast it is. My closer was whatshername. It's a great track to end a great album like American Idiot. And I have found my whatshername after looking for ages. But she doesn't want me. 😂

Well we have all had those. From Chicago, to Toronto. The ones that we all call whatsername.
