East Jesus Nowhere rules all. Last Night On Earth is very sweet, probably their best love song. Christian's Inferno is fabulous. Great trio of contrasting songs.

I know I've said it a number of times in a number of threads, but I'll say it again since there are a number of new satanists trilogy supporters in the thread. The trilogy was not a failure because it wasn't a rock opera. It was a failure because of a number of things. It was supposed to be a throwback to before GD did concept albums, but it seems they forgot what made them good before AI and that was: Harmonies Bass lines witty/creative lyrics that related to people easily The trilogy has: Poor vocal production Poor guitar production Few memorable basslines Little to no harmonizing Cliched and flat out not creative lyrics Not many memorable vocal efforts from Billie

I don't see it as the atrocity that people say it is. Could it have been better? For sure. Could it have been worse? Much, much worse. There are just too many songs, too many ideas going on at once, but there are some brilliant moments.

If you don't like it, leave the thread. You know from the name there are going to be opinions you disagree with. In this case, DRB is perfectly relevant to the discussion of basslines, and if Ceadog hates it it's his perfect right to express that. He doesn't constantly complain about everything--see the Biffy thread. Your constant complaining about his complaining is far more "lame" that the initial negativity itself.

For as awful as the lyrics are, and how mindlessly put together the structure of the song is, Dirty Rotten Bastards is quite a lot of fun to listen to. If I'm showing the trilogy to someone who doesn't like Green Day (Ok Ok I know how dumb and counterintuitive that sounds ) DRB might be the first song I show people. That or Nuclear Family maybe.

Better consistency = / = better album. Nimrod. is way more all over the place than, say, 39/Smooth, but I don't think anyone would say the latter is a better album. Yeah, Uno especially falls victim to that. How the hell are any of the songs supposed to give off the vibe of "Getting ready for the party"? Half of it ("Troublemaker", "Kill the DJ", etc.) belongs on Dos if we're saying that's "the party album", and songs like "Rusty James" belong on Tre if that one's the hangover. And on Tre, "Dirty Rotten Bastards" most definitely belongs on Dos going by partying. Like I said earlier, the only successful theme-depiction in the entire Trilogy is the duo of "Wow! That's Loud" and "Amy", and it's notable that Dos, which is the closest of the trio to espousing its said theme, is also the worst of the three. 5. Basket Case 4. Hitchin' a Ride 3. Castaway 2. East Jesus Nowhere 1. Jesus of Suburbia

Speaking of bass lines, how awesome is Mikes bass in Castaway? Awesome as fuck.

I need to listen to that more. I remember thinking that it was pretty damn good for a b-sides album. I wouldn't say it's amazing, but it's a little more inventive than AI and Breakdown. Look at Nightlife and DRB for a start. The bass fills in Nuclear Family and the bass in Stay the Night is cool. There are probably more examples. * Complicated. The bass bridge in Holiday isn't complicated, but it's pretty damn good.

How can the song that gave us the title of this sacred thread be shit? It does kill the mood set by Last Night On Earth quite spectacularly, but it's still a good song in itself, for the lyrical content if nothing else.

well the harmonizing isn't Mike and Billie it's just Billie's voice and Billie's voice again.

I just don't see what makes it compelling. He's supposed to become the biggest badass in history because he left his mother and his girlfriend died? And he doesn't, because even when he puts the suit on he's still a complete bitch. I could go on at length, but I won't because we don't want to derail this thread yet again.

The Trilogy failed from the moment they said they were gonna make a record like Dookie, and then dropped Uno.

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I think people here are making the Trilogy out to be the worst thing since Star Wars Episode I. I really don't think it's all that bad. My frustration comes from seeing it fall short of its potential. But each one has a few tracks that are flat-out duds. Cut those out and tweak the good songs a little more and they could have had a truly special final product.

I agree, the trilogy is brilliant. There are 2 songs I hate (Troublemaker, Nightlife) but I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoy every other song on all 3 albums. It's just good fun. People seem to think that everything they make has to try to one up American Idiot and that's bullshit.

But that's not saying much since the bass in AI/21CB is buried in the mix. It's essentially irrelevant. The trilogy is a slight step up from the previous two but in no way does it compare to Mike's best. None of the songs would remotely crack the top 10 bass lines for me.

Yeah, Mike's stuff might not be so intricate these days but what he writes is still damn good when he puts the effort in. JOS, Holiday, Missing You, Kill The DJ and DRB are damn good.

Fucked if I know. They're both angry, but they're about completely different subjects, and EJN is in a different key, is far more ferocious, and is much more a pounding march. That argument is like saying that "My Generation" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" are the same song. And so much of 21CB is political anyway that you really can't call EJN out as the "token protest song".

But I think The Beatles were first , and more likely to have inspired Green Day especially considering there's even a kind of quote from another Beatles song in there which Billie acknowledged (sending his wife texts signed off with "all my lovin'" led to the line "sending all my love to you"). Probably both got inspired by the Beatles.
