I too am experiencing the strange sensation of this album now being older than I was when it came out (15 years old!) Happy birthday 21CB, you've aged like a fine wine!4 points

The OEB patch is so cute! I also saw on Instagram the other day he took a photo with some fans and was wearing a Ramones shirt which had "Billie" added along with the Ramones' names which is super cute3 points

I still think this is maximum Green Day, even if American Idiot might be better as an album and I might like Nimrod more on some days. This was my first Green Day album and it's probably the most nostalgic of them all for me.2 points

Thank you!!😃 I really love that shirt! Hope to see it in Europe!2 points

“Only anarchists are pretty” and it looks like a big safety pin hanging from the collar. Very cool shirt they’d sell a ton if they merched it They had to be a gift. It’s funny2 points

Hello fellow fangirls, let’s talk about the Rockville show! Am I the only one obsessed with Billie‘s new shirt?! I love the OEB patch. And what’s that big silver thing at the collar? I‘ve spent the last twenty minutes on YouTube trying to find out what the print says. 😅„Only….. are pretty“. Who’s pretty? That damned guitar strap is in the way all the time.😂 Help me if you know more… Besides it has to be said that Billie looked great AGAIN. Very satisfying amount of eyeliner!😉2 points

Talking of which, can't remember if we discuss 'Official Music Video's much? Do we love 'em, hate 'em, or just indifferent. 4, I think. 21st C, Know Your Enemy, 21 Guns & Last of the American Girls. Imho 21st C just edges it. Remember seeing a doc' on making of 21 Guns, which was a tad scary.2 points

Amazing album. I could spend hours talking about how fantastic it is. All 18 tracks imo are great. What I will say is I think it's only getting more popular with time. While there have always been plenty of people who appreciate this album for the masterpiece it is, I think I'm seeing people call it their favourite album more and more over time. When people discover Green Day's music through American Idiot or Saviors or whatever new album they release, 21CB is likely going to be an album that stands out to them if they like those albums. The rise of Last Night on Earth on streaming (it's in the band's Top 10 on Spotify now despite that track being a non-single) is gonna bring more people to the album. And I think the variety that this album has compared to some of their other album's only makes it stand out more. I think no matter what they did after American Idiot, it wasn't possible for the band to please everyone. But when people just listen to the album for what it is and don't try to think of it as the "follow up to American Idiot", they're much more likely to appreciate it for what it is.2 points

I've always interpreted as it being about him trying to say good bye to alcoholism, even before discovering just now through your post that the Adeline street in Oakland has a lots of bars and club (before I thought maybe he just associated the Adeline records era of his life, or the people involved in the project, with alcoholism or something) - with this new information now I'm feeling even more convinced about it. The "I'm gonna drink my wine and let it go" being like "I'm gonna have my last drink, and start being sober tomorrow", but then not quite following through (when you're (supposed to be) sober, but you still wake up with a hangover") and knowing that sooner or later he'll have to say goodbye for real. I hadn't considered before he could be saying good bye to an actual person, and that's an interesting interpretation as well, fits with the "I'll see you later when I get my shit together" line too. This reminds me of my good old days writing song meanings for geekstinkbreath.net2 points

Incredible album! It was the first one I got to anticipate after becoming a fan from American Idiot and it was so much fun being on GDC for it. I still remember waiting for every little hint and speculating about it before there was real social media, and "team A and team B" on here (people who listened when it was released digitally and people who waited longer for the CD ). It was mindblowing hearing it, even bigger and more complex than AI and so worth the wait. Got to see them live the first time for the tour as well with probably their best setlists ever and again it was even more awesome because of getting to meet so many GDCers at the show. I'll always associate the album with the good times being a new member here. I think this is one of their best (and possibly underrated) music videos As well as best show opener ever (watching this video of the crowd always makes me HYPED to see GD live)2 points

I remember when this album came out, so much excitement It's such an amazing album, the song writing is genius as usual, the story line is so good, and so many great songs! Starting with 21st Century Breakdown of course, but also American Eulogy, Peacemaker (one my top 5 GD songs I haven't seen live but would love to do). The tour was amazing too, including the one and only show GD has done in Venezuelan 🥹 Amazing era for the fans, even if it was a tough one for the band. Always great to find a fellow Fancy Sauce fan 😁1 point

Another interview with Billie Joe to add to @solongfromthestars if ok. The American Dream Is Killing Me: In an interview with Ayesha Rascoe of Washington DC-based NPR (National Public Radio) in January 2024, Billie Joe discussed the inspiration for the song. "I think being in California and seeing, like, houseless people just on the street and people without options in life and the cost of living going up, it, like, creates that chaos and depression that is sort of what the song sort of reflects." Billie Joe went to explain why he feels the song needs to be redefined. "It's like the working class has become sort of a service industry, and we're not really giving very many options to people. You know, in the 1970's, my dad was a truck driver. He was a teamster. My mom was a waitress. Six kids in the house, and they were able to afford their own home. But I think now I don't really see that being very feasible for a lot of people." I can't remember reading the following before, so soz if repeated: An overview comment from Billie Joe again from Vulture in January 2024. "We had a large batch of songs that we recorded in London, and when we saw it come together, I remember thinking, 'Oh, this is the connection'. Saviors does fell like a trifecta with Dookie and American Idiot, where it feels like a life's work. I went from not knowing what the hell I was doing, to going, 'Oh gosh, we managed to bridge the gap between those two huge albums'." (both articles taken from The Story of Green Day)1 point

It really is special. While it’s also tragic that Billie writes his best songs when he’s deeply unhappy. I want those great songs and lyrics but I also want him to be happy…1 point

Imho this is why GD has been and always will be so special. As well as awesome unique music. The songs written by Billie Joe, and there are so many, contain lyrics that are, close to his heart, describe his life experiences and trials. Many of them, particularly the '90s, I could relate to having experienced them myself. As well as the music, his life experiences he shared helped me to move on to a better time. ❤️1 point

The phrase 'meet my maker' does refer to dying, but it could be death by suicide or death by alcoholism. And this has reminded me that there's a quote from Billie (from The Sun I think, but I'm not going to give them any clicks because it's a garbage newspaper) about Goodnight Adeline: 'Goodnight Adeline deals with depression. The very last line is about when I get my shit together, "I know I’m going to climb my way out of this. I know I gotta wait for my Phoenix to rise from the ashes of this." That song makes me think of singing in a stadium in England. It’s got a chorus you can really sing along to.' I'm pretty sure the Adeline in the song is the street in Oakland. Because it's such a long, significant street, it has a lot of bars and clubs, so the drunks of Oakland have spent a lot of time on and around it. However, I do think he's talking to a person, not the street itself or his alcoholism – perhaps saying goodbye to them from 'the gutter' his face is in outside an Adeline Street bar as they walk away ('you're going to say goodbye and let it go') because he chose alcohol over them ('I'm going to drink my wine and let it go'). Or maybe he is saying goodbye to the street as a metaphor for trying to walk away from his alcoholism, but it's too late; the subject is already gone and he gives in again. Since it comes before Suzie Chapstick on the record, I assume that's who he's talking to and that the goodbye in this song is the prequel to 'will I ever see your face again?' When I first heard Goodnight Adeline, my interpretation was a bit different – I imagined someone staring out of their window at Adeline Street, too depressed to move, so that view is their entire world. They can't force themselves out to actually deal with their problems, they stay inside drinking instead, and so someone they love walks away. That would lead into 'outside my window ... it's just another vacant cold and lonely night' and 'outside my window, there is nothing but a sky.' Just my personal interpretations, obvs.1 point

Um I think you mean the title for worst song goes to The Forgotten.1 point

Forever Now?! Are you insane? Boy, is that an opinion that belongs in the Unpopular Opinions thread. 😲1 point

Been there done that too many times. See how incredibly consistent I've been for 6 years? Yeah, live versions are usually taken away from Spotify or region-blocked. In Finland, you can't listen any Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performances and in Ultimate Green Day Playlist it's only live versions that are missing excluding now Here Comes the Shock.0 points

Considering how Green Day songs usually just do not drop from Spotify, especially studio records, I believe this warrants a thread. I don't remember a single time any other Green Day song ever dropping from Spotify other than live versions. As much as we would like to believe that this is just band coming to their senses and realizing how godawful Here Comes the Shark is, it's still up on YouTube and honestly, it's not their worst song ever. That title goes to Forever Now. My theory is that it's either getting re-released on some album (B-sides and other shitty material album would be great) or they simply don't want to have it officially anywhere anymore.0 points
