On this day 5 years ago (29 September 2019), The Coverups played the Golden Bull in Oakland, CA. More photos: 8 years ago (29 September 2016), Green Day played the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby, PA on the Revolution Radio club tour. More photos: 15 years ago (29 September 2009), Green Day played in Madrid, Spain on the 21st Century Breakdown Tour. More photos: 20 years ago (29 September 2004), Green Day played 12 songs for Radio One and some competition winners were invited to watch. "In the weeks leading up to 29th September 2004, BBC Radio One in the UK were running a competition. 100 lucky competition winners would get to see Green Day up close and personal perform a taped gig at Maida Vale Studios in London to celebrate the release of their brand new album, American Idiot. I managed to win 2 tickets because I'd correctly answered that 'One light, one mind, flashing in the dark' were lyrics from Minority, quicker than the 1500+ others in the BBC chatroom on that afternoon in early September 2004. The BBC chatroom mod moved me to a private room where they took my details. I was over the moon. I'd been a massive fan since 11 years old, running 2 Green Day websites in the UK. I couldn't quite believe that here I was now, 21 and getting to see them at such a small venue. The smallest previously had been at the Brixton Academy. Unbeknownst to many of the successful ~100 competition winners, a runner at BBC was calling said competition winners looking to find 'the UK's number 1 Green Day fan.' Fortunately, when I mentioned 'I've been a fan for 10 years, run Green Day websites and know that The Network were in fact Green Day,' she said 'can I come see you for an interview on Friday?' She arrived on the Friday, with a gift of 'The Network - Money Money 2020' on CD (I already had a copy, and she conceded that she probably should have guessed that!). She interviewed me for a couple of hours about all things Green Day and it was later aired (post 29th September) on BBC Radio One under a headline of '15 Minutes of Fan.' Fast forward to the 29th September 2004, BBC asked me to arrive at Maida Vale earlier to get some soundbites for their production. I was introduced and spent time with Zane Lowe inside the venue as the competition winners queued outside. As I was sitting down inside the venue, I heard Mike Dirnt talking in a room not too far away and my urge was to get up and find him. BBC asked me not to and there may be a chance shortly. Begrudgingly but in highsight probably a good decision. After 30 minutes or so, we were wrapped with the soundbites. Zane asked me to follow him. He said stay relaxed and you can stick around. We walked into the main studio at Maida Vale and immediately I saw the equipment out. Tre was sitting on his stool talking to his tech. Zane introduced me to Tre, he saw my Green Day shirt said hi, gave me a hug and asked how I was. He made me immediately feel at ease and I realised right then what Zane had done and what he meant. No sign of Billie or Mike yet. After speaking for 10 minutes or so (inc Bill Schneider who asked if my shirt was official as he'd never seen it), everyone started making their way out of the studio room and towards a back room. Nobody asked me to leave. I quietly followed. Before I knew it, I was sitting on a couch in a room with about a dozen people including Billie, Mike and Tre (and Jason). I said hi and shook hands, I tried to act relaxed but inside my stomach, it was a shit show. They were preparing for the gig, I was handed a Budweiser and I tried to stay out of the way. They were all kind, professional and in that very moment I did my very best to NOT be Green Day's biggest UK fan; because that would have never got me in that room in the first place! After 5 minutes, Zane said good luck to the band and to enjoy it. They embraced, I shook their hands and left with Zane. We went back to the studio room and I took my position right in front of Billie's mic stand. Shortly after, competition winners began streaming in to join me in the room. 10-15 minutes later, Green Day were on. After the gig, Billie handed me his pick. Surreal but unforgettable experience." — SpuddyUK on Reddit 31 years ago (29 September 1993), Green Day played in Pittsburgh, PA for the first time while supporting Bad Religion. 32 years ago (29 September 1992), Green Day played the X-Ray Cafe in Portland, OR on the Kerplunk Tour. 33 years ago (29 September 1991), Green Day played Paradigm in Ventura, CA.4 points

I remember at the end of the RevRad Tour they all had the radio tattoo (like the front cover of the album). There are pics online of those. My mind is going blank at the minute It might even have been Tre's dad who has a tattoo for each tour Billie also has a tattoo for St Jimmy from when he played the part in the musical and which was done by Kat von D. Here's the RevRad tattoos St Jimmy2 points

I think Billie says something at the end like "no offence to Vegas. It was said in the heat of passion" or something like that? There's more pics on Billie's Instagram story but not had chance to check if they're duplicated or not yet2 points

I saw them at the Tower Theater in Philly 8 years ago today. One of the most special concerts of theirs I’ve been to. It’s an old theater and I thought the balcony was going to collapse every time Billie told us to jump. I still remember watching them perform Still Breathing and feeling blown away by all of the emotion attached to it. It was a really joyful night, very similar to the Saviors Tour in that respect.1 point

Yeah I was wondering if they were going to get end-of-tour tattoos this time. I remember they did last tour at least. Hopefully we get to see the close-up of this one1 point

This has happened before and eventually an agreement was reached with parties involved. YouTube state they hope to negotiate an agreement with SESAC in the future. Thereby allowing YouTube to continue it's remit to share those music videos freely with anyone anywhere to enjoy.1 point

Thank you for sharing this! It says it is unavailable in my country so I am seeing if I can share the one I can see on YouTube.1 point

It is a brilliant space for writers to practice and to find stuff to read. Of course there's plenty of guff, but some stuff is golden.1 point

Green Day songs are gone from YouTube in the US due to SESAC agreement expiration https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/songs-blocked-youtube-legal-dispute-sesac-1236017120/#recipient_hashed=f95760d655f6de465ecd6412017df2e6d71867deed41e3a969e25ba63516e294&recipient_salt=8282c7d0e6163feaefb96fcaa07394aa67bf19c229a2cd96736e629666b69b18&utm_medium=email&utm_source=exacttarget&utm_campaign=Breaking News&utm_content=554853_09-28-2024&utm_term=1956471 point

Yes, I am aware of this. I have to admit that I haven't really loved most of the Green Day stuff I have found there. However, I did find some other bandom stuff that was like really...specific...that I couldn't find elsewhere. May or may not have such things bookmarked LOL.1 point

Looks like Dave Mustaine was at one of the shows (I guess in San Diego last night)1 point

It's got all kinds of stuff listed in bandom and music, and it's an enormous fan archive in general, so was curious how many people know about it.1 point

I don't write there and don't have an account there, but I have occasionally...um...peeked at stuff there LOL. Why? 😶1 point

This kind of reminds me of the Steve Jobs one which also didn’t land well. Then his emails leak years later proving the guy was a literal piece of shit to his employees and he even worked deals with other companies to control the job market in tech.1 point

At the time of this article he'd already apologised. Pathetic fake outrage1 point

It would have been cool if like right after, they headed down to the school and performed a mini free concert lol. Again though, that would have been disastrous in terms crowd control and crowd size.. 🤣1 point

So far, the band has promoted their coffee way more than any of their new singles 😆1 point

lol yeah I was thinking of attending this. I live less than 15 minutes away. Having met Billie before, I was like damn this may be a shot to meet the whole band. But then I thought it’s going to be wild. The amount of fans in that tiny lot. It’s going to be jammed. And also feared that something of the sort may happen (the disorganization) So I decided not to lol. Guess I’m glad I didn’t haha. Besides, I already met the guy himself. And that was before a sound check, and it was literally just me and like two other people who shared the experience. Way more intimate. Less screaming. Less shoving. You know all that good stuff haha 😌 But I’m glad some people had fun. And the boys have been immortalized in their old stomping grounds.1 point

Last Night On Earth is just a beautiful song regardless of what music you like. It reminds me of The Beatles song Something by George Harrison. This should have been a single especially in 2009 this could have been a huge crossover hit IMO.1 point

You haven't listened to MCR, Dead Kennedys nor the Misfits? Damn, I like all three of those. I specifically remember a time where I would be playing MCR at my computer lab!! My fav song from them is def Foundations of Decay. As for album 15 speculation, that would be awesome as fuck, but I'm afraid we'll probably wait the 4-year cycle again. It's sort of like The Network's 17 year cycle.1 point

My wife and I went to the event and the KTVU broadcast was incorrect. They stated that about 200 people were in the crowd, but we overheard a security guard saying that 530 VIP lanyards were handed out and no one new would be allowed in the event area when someone was trying to access it without a lanyard. Obviously not everyone could stay until Green Day arrived, but more than 200 people were there for their arrival and numerous people without lanyards were waiting in undesignated areas. Also, KTVU called it "Punky" Bunny Coffee. We bought two small bags of the medium roast coffee from 7-11 after it was over and the crowd had dissipated. Right after I picked up a bag of coffee, I heard someone behind me say, "I can't believe people are buying this shit." I turned around and saw that it was one of the people who worked the merch event table. She looked at me, shook her head, and then laughed. This partially explains why the event was so disorganized. My wife worked as an event planner and would have been fired for organizing an event like this. They even kept the mayor waiting over 2 hours! One person fainted from the heat and after that the event staff decided to hand out water, but it wasn't enough for everyone in the crowd. The good part was interacting with the fans in the crowd, singing together before Green Day arrived, and being able to say that I saw them spray paint the wall.
