https://www.vulture.com/article/billie-joe-armstrong-green-day-saviors.html I thought this was a really well done interview! Some highlights: On his relapse: "When I was on the Hella Mega tour (The Hella Mega Tour featured Green Day, Fall Out Boy, and Weezer), I started to struggle with alcohol when we were in Europe. It was all fun and games. What got me back into drinking was that sort of fear of missing out. I felt like I was alone. AA was difficult for me because, especially in the Bay Area, there’s the one word, anonymous. It was hard for me to maintain my anonymity. That was the struggle for the five years I was sober. I was out drinking again for a few years and then I just realized I was just unhealthy: My mental health was falling down the drain, getting the shakes. And then I was like, “Fuck this, I feel messy right now.” The only thing alcohol was doing for me was getting in the way of the things I wanted to do and the person I wanted to be. I have a great set of sober friends that I didn’t have before when I was sober. They make going out and doing things a lot more fun. We support each other. We’ll drink Heineken 0.0 and smoke a little bit. Not weed but cigarettes. We have a good time for the night and then, you know, nothing good happens after 2 a.m. You get tired and it’s like “Man, I just wanna go to bed.” I’m older, I’m wiser. I have different things that make me happy. I don’t need to be out all night getting fucked up. There’s a song I did on the Longshot (Armstrong’s side project that released one record, Love Is for Losers, in 2018) record called “Chasing a Ghost,” which talks about being lonely in sobriety. “Dilemma” is sort of connected to that." On the trilogy: "It got stiff sounding. I would love to go back and do some kind of reissue of just pulling the best of the trilogy and making it lean heavier on the rock side. It will happen at some point." !!! On newer artists exploring pop-punk, like Olivia Rodrigo: "I hear it but don’t go out buying any of those records or stream it. It does pass me by. When I hear it, I think it sounds good. A lot of that is for a younger audience, and I’m trying to figure out my own generation right now and where I come from. I think it would be fun to work with her sometime. She’s talented. Sometimes you can see how someone is interested in what punk rock is and maybe they don’t quite have some of the influences or knowledge that I have on the history of punk rock. I’m kind of an encyclopedia. To do something with someone like Olivia Rodrigo would be fun."13 points

Can't win ... Do something different (foam) and get heavily criticised for it (myself included) or stick to what they know and what people demand they do and get criticised for it13 points

“In reality, it sounds as if the band have burrowed further into their comfort zone with this record, rather than straining at the leash to move things forward.” I’m a journalist and it really pisses me off when writers don’t even research their subject. In every single interview, they’ve made it clear they’re not straining at the leash to move things forward and are very much so taking a walk through past eras and sounds. They’re very obviously not aiming to reinvent the wheel and just wanted to make a solid Green Day album fans will love. At the very least, I’d expect a music journalist to seek out a few interviews from the band first to try to determine what sound they were actually aiming for here. Also kinda side-eyed, “Somewhat surprisingly, two of the best songs here are ones with softer edges.” Is that really surprising when some of their biggest hits are Good Riddance, WMUWSE, and 21 Guns? Sorry to be grumpy. It’s a 3-star review so it’s not like it’s bad, but it’s just frustrating when people who clearly don’t fully know what they’re talking about are influencing whether people pick this album up or not. I don’t usually get too excited one way or the other about reviews because they’re so subjective, and if people have legitimate criticisms that’s totally fine. But I don’t appreciate poor research that ultimately leads to a negatively skewed review.12 points

It looks a lot bigger than I thought it would be. And for the love of god, stop it with Rock and Roll All Night.11 points

Wow, great interview! I love Olivia Rodrigo, so I’d love for them to collab with her! I continue to be kinda floored and super happy about how open he’s being regarding relapse and sobriety. He never wanted to talk about it before and while he doesn’t owe anyone anything about his personal life, I have to think there’s something healthy about being open and honest about it, in terms of acceptance and accountability. Tbh, it almost seems like he needed to relapse in order to understand how necessary sobriety is for him. Looking back, in 2012 he was basically forced into it after a very public incident, and it was under a circumstance where he was abusing more than just alcohol. I can see how an alcoholic yearning to drink again could easily justify it by blaming all the problems back then solely on the pills. Which he literally did say during the FOAM promo…I don’t think I had ever experienced someone’s addiction so obviously speaking for them before. Those interviews scared the shit out of me. I feel so beyond grateful that he seems so much healthier and happier and seems to have a more extensive support system now, and seemingly was able to come to the conclusion on his own this time that sobriety is truly a necessity. I know it can’t be easy with his lifestyle so it’s no small deal.9 points

jesus this review 🤣 "If the rock scene needs a hero, it’s probably not going to be Green Day" if there is one band from the rock music genre who consistently shaped the music landscape in the last 3+ decades, its green day8 points

Come on guys, I desperately want to hear the album as much as the next guy but let's not get this place shut down again LOL7 points

That was a great interview with (finally) good questions! Personally, I'm kind of sad that he's not that familiar with The Black Parade since that album, along with American Idiot, were the first albums I can say that changed my life forever and have opened the world for more music to do so. It's interesting to see how much he's mellowed out on Tim Yohannan. Oh, and Green Day, please don't collaborate with Olivia Rodrigo. 😅6 points

Conferences frequently hold separate ticketed events, like a party or a concert, where proceeds go to a charity. This is the Consumer Electronics Show, which is massive. Might sound weird, but a lot of big-time acts play at these things. It’s usually for a good cause, so it’s cool!6 points

it's quite funny how the writer for the article suggest he should write "meaningful lyrics that promote gun control" instead of lyrics like “I spent my money on a bloody, soft target,” and “My condolences/Ain’t that a kick in the head.” as if those lyrics don't go hard as fuck lol. I think it's pretty clear he's taking a cynical stance on the subject rather than a protest one, like with Bang Bang6 points

As I've said before, I can't moderate what you're doing in your PMs or outside GDC. Just don't be stupid about it.6 points

He said it was about Adrienne, so I'm guessing a dialogue, but am sure he's fine with the other interpretation. (and if I choose to believe boyfriend is referring to Kevin, well then I just will)5 points

Man, I know you’re just a troll, but seriously- fuck off. Art is a creative medium and using art to explore and express one’s sexuality is not only valid, but vital. That kind of stuff saves lives, no joke. I’d say it’s open to interpretation, which is great.5 points

@pacejunkie punk Hard to tell without hearing it, but my first thought was that it was sorta like, “do you want to be my whatever? Girlfriend, boyfriend, best friend? Doesn’t matter to me what you are, I just love you.” Whatever it means, it’s cute af lol.5 points

I think it’s really cool that Billie is into younger artists, appreciates how they do social media, etc. A lot of musicians get very “old man yells at cloud” about this stuff and there’s no need. I respect that he’s still open to discovering new artists and clearly admires them. He’s someone who is open-minded in a lot of different ways, and that’s one of the things I’ve always liked about him! Green Day was once a young band who some thought weren’t punk enough and others thought were sell-outs. I’m not really into lobbing insults at other young, talented artists.5 points

Yeah, that was a great read, the interviewer clearly knew their stuff. Glad to see Billie is just as addicted to Discogs as I am lol. Trilogy reissue asap please!5 points

Glad green day is still green day unlike other bands who went to the generic mainstream rock genre. You know deep inside it's just a generic pop song but they keep calling it pure rock.5 points

Respect other's opinions. She's just doing her job. And it's not like she discredited Green Day. And if so, it would be Green Day's turn to act but not ours.5 points
-
Yeah this is an extremely weird criticism the reviewer is making. Just a thought, but perhaps Billie wasn’t trying to write a meaningful song about gun control lol??? If it’s about how fucked up the world is, he’s clearly just playing off of that. Really odd for the critic to suggest…writing a different song? I could understand the critique if he was trying to write a sensitive song and included something crass, but I can already tell that wasn’t the intent of this song.5 points

I think he likes the ambiguity, like the he/her thing in Basket Case. Because he could have written it as "Do you want to be my girlfriend/yes I want to be your girlfriend" but he didn't.4 points

This was a general crowd at a conference, so when making the setlist they need to assume it’s people who only know their hits. Would be a really bad place to debut a new album, because it’s not necessarily an audience of fans!4 points

When I opened those front row videos from their performance last night I very literally swooned. 😂 I am now extremely attached to the blonde hair. I love that he’s leaving it on the longer side too, the volume in the front looks so great. Also, for as long as I’ve been following this band Billie has been wearing that same leather jacket and I find it so endearing. He looks so handsome in the simple all-black look.4 points

Hoping for a song like Outlaws on the album.. maybe Goodnight Adeline?4 points

So since we’re only a week and a half from the official release of the album, should we start talking week 1 strategies to help get this album to #1 on the Billboard 200? I have 4 physical copies preordered, but obviously I’ll only be streaming the album upon release so they can get those streaming numbers. I’ve been streaming their singles on repeat every night while I sleep and I plan on doing the same with the album. I read somewhere that if your volume is turned ALL the way down a stream won’t count, so I have it on very low and use a sound machine to mask it. If anyone else has any strategies / tips, please share. I want to make sure I’m putting in maximum effort to help our boys out. Especially that first week after release!4 points
