I think Green Day made a great move hiring the Baxleys for their videos this cycle. All of the videos have had a really clear artistic vision and were very well executed. They each told a story of the song that helped elevate it. As art, they complement the songs in the way that videos should at their best. By contrast, the FOAM videos were a mess. The scrapped FOAM video led to a boring performance shoot with B roll that did nothing for the song. Oh Yeah was okay, but it didn’t help me to understand what the song was about very much, and FRA was basically hockey promo. Without one directing team behind all the videos, the results lacked cohesion. What we’re seeing now is something completely different, similar to the way Sam Bayer made a great collection of videos for AI that all went together. Hats off to Alice and Ryan Baxley and welcome to the Green Day fam!18 points

Whoa the video is amazing. As someone who's been through rehab (told I only had a year to live if I didn't stop drinking) it gave me the chills. Just whoa! So much I want to say but am hopeless at putting my thoughts into words. I love the song and it's brilliantly done but it's actually my least favourite of the three so far. And just for the people talking about being able to drink in moderation if you're truly an alcoholic it's not possible. One drink is too many because sooner or later that one drink is going to lead you right back to the mess you started off with.17 points

As a licensed mental health therapist who’s bleeds Green Day and who battles with PTSD/Depression/Anxiety this song and video just speaks volumes. This, Still Breathing, Lazy Bones…amongst others just speaks truth to mental health and addiction I feel it’s an accurate and sad video I feel it’s “funny” until the video shows Billie is the brunt of the joke then it subtly flips to the dark side of the party. Brave and honest lyrics as someone who struggles with mental health and do my best to help others I truly think this song can save people and have them seek help. No BS I hope this single blows up and I hope Billie is in a great head space he really is in peak writing firm hear and I can almost feel the hurt in his vocals similar to wake me up and still breathing I feel it’s so genuine and it’s just beautifully strong and inspiring by also respecting the topic.16 points

I think I’ve already watched this video more than the first two combined16 points

It’s actually shocking how much better these first three singles are compared to the first three from FOAMF - Father of All - Fire Ready Aim - Oh Yeah 🤮16 points

Alice Baxley posted a comment by a redditor where she said they totally got it, and the comment was that the video was two POVs, what the binge night looks like to the drinker (b/w) and what it really looks like to everyone else (color). When it goes to color you’re seeing what actually happened that the partier doesn’t remember or only realizes the next day when people tell him.13 points

Was just listening to Holy Toledo! and it struck me how similar in content it is to Dilemma. “I wanna go where the trouble begins” “we’re hellraisers/deathwish cravers” “killing myself just to live” Party sound with a heavy dose of regret On another note, I hate how YouTube puts thumbnails all over the last 15-20 seconds of a video. I want to see the last quick cuts, they’re important to the story and because half the image is obscured they’re hard to make out. Directors put a lot of work into these videos and the dumb clickbait goes right on top like its nothing. I’d like to see a version with them removed if possible12 points

Fantastic song. And fantastic video. I think this song hits so differently than Still Breathing. . Brutal Love is one of my favorite trilogy song, and this one speaks to me in the same way. In a way, it makes Still Breathing sound pretty naive to the whole post rehab scenario. Such a slippery slope addiction. One of the things that resonates with me is wanting to be able to have the fun, and being around someone with issues, and still having a part of me want them to be a part of the fun. It's why I find it easy to turn a blind eye to it at times. And then boom, you're at the not fun part, and the impact on friends and family is honestly brutal. It's really hard to be honest about that part. It's a lot easier to diminish the impact and deflect the damage. If Billie is doing that work in his real life, well I give him credit... In terms of this song tho, lyrics, guitar riffs, just a total banger. I really have liked all 3 songs so far, and they have all piqued my interest in different ways. I am super excited to hear this album from start to finish. Bring on Saviors!12 points

Holy shit. A song by Billie Joe about coming to terms with the fact that he is mortal, and his behaviors pre-iHeartRadio were a slow cycle that was killing him. Maybe even a song about his post-iHeart stint in rehab? I don't think we've seen a song this sharp, biting and personal since, I mean, I don't even know. This one hit me in the feels. I've never been a partier, never touched anything heavier than pot, never been a heavy drinker, although I am capable of a good binge in the right company, and I still feel him. It's not GD's best song of the past whatever years, not even my favorite song of the past whatever years (my heart belongs to thee, Still Breathing), but it is the biggest gut punch I've felt from a GD song that I can remember. Maybe I'm misinterpreting it, but I hope I'm not. This is a brilliant song that's going to fly under the radar to some extent, and it shouldn't. It's too good.10 points

Thinking about it, and the two other things that hit me, are in the party scene, a lot of it is random hands handing drinks to Billie, rubbing his hair, etc. And in the later bar scene and wrong house scene, it's Billie by himself. Everyone else had gone home.9 points

A station called Radio Rock in Norway has played The American Dream is Killing Me, Look Ma, No Brains! and Dilemma, im very happy about that🤩9 points

I’m really excited for this album because it has gotten practically my whole family hooked. My sisters and I are big Green Day fans, and we have loved all the singles so far. My dad also likes Green Day, but he has mainly stuck with the older stuff and hasn’t listened to much past AI. However, he first heard LMNB in that Taco Bell commercial and he absolutely loved it, and now even he is looking forward to the album. Never thought I’d see him excited about new music9 points

It makes no difference to me, but for them, I really want this album to succeed and it makes me so happy to see the great response these songs have gotten. It feels like an uphill battle by no fault of their own to reach the masses — rock has been out of style among the general public for a long time, and so it’s difficult to even get this stuff from the most popular rock bands heard anymore. So far, I think the music itself and the marketing is setting the album up to do well. I certainly hope so.9 points

What I find really interesting about this video is that I feel like it’s a reality he likely could not face unless he was presently in a good place. Which isn’t to say he doesn’t struggle, but I think if he were currently in the thick of it, this isn’t the type of honesty he (or anyone who deals with addiction) would be able to own up to, because as the video so blatantly shows, addiction doesn’t let you think you’re having anything but a good time. It’s such a poignant and reflective video.8 points

The bridge is killing me, it's so good. This song combines Billie's more melodic, pop-orientated songwriting with the traditional GD guitar sound and neither sound out of place with the other.8 points

I really hope there are some club shows here in the States because I really need to be crammed into a small venue bopping with everyone to this song.8 points

That’s a dedicated actor doing his own stunts! Honestly I think this is the most acting we’ve seen from him in a while and he knocked it out of the park8 points

Just remembered this piece where Zac Carper (Alice Baxley’s brother & FIDLAR singer) said that BJ helped him kick his heroin addiction. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/how-green-days-billie-joe-helped-fidlar-singer-kick-heroin-make-new-lp-52359/amp/ In another article (Consequence of Sound) he said: “I probably wouldn’t be sober today if Billie Joe didn’t call. He really helped me when no one else was there.”7 points

I think my favorite part of the song is when he sings "I just wanna drink the poison". That one always hits me in the guts. You can really feel the struggle between self-destruction and desperately trying to gain control of your life. 💔7 points

Speaking of the music video, it’s now up to 336,500 views after ~24 hours.7 points

I think they intended to have Sam Bayer shoot all their trilogy videos too. He did Oh Love and Kill the DJ. Then Billie’s rehab prevented any more videos being made with the band and you ended up with ones like Stray Heart and X Kid that they weren’t in at all. Dilemma is my favorite since Back in the USA because I like videos that tell a story.7 points
-
I think the ambivalent feelings might be part of the story and the intention. Most people think drinking is just fun, everyone is encouraging you, like the band mates are encouraging Billie in the video (you can almost hear them say "Oh come on, just one drink!"). And it might be just fun as long as you're not an addict, then you have a drink too much and a headache the next day and carry on. But for an addict, it can be the start of a downward sprial and the fun turns sour. I think the video portraits that in a fantastic way. Yes, it makes me sad too because the struggle must be so hard. I have a sober alcoholic in my family and somehow, being reminded of how hard it must be, it makes me even more proud of him (and our Billie of course🥰).7 points

So far, we got three songs and I really like the diversity in terms of sound and lyrical content. TADIKM sounds like it was inspired by 21CBD while LMNB sounds like Insomniac/Ninmrod with a modern twist. Dilemma definitely gives me RevRad vibes. Still Breathing is the obvious comparison but it also reminds me of Outlaws and Bouncing off the Wall (yes, really). This is why I believe that this album will have a little bit of everything, especially because OEB sounds somewhat FOAMy, even if we haven’t heard the official version yet. I like that. Getting an album that reflects the band‘s entire discography would be amazing. Concerning the song‘s commercial success: I don’t believe that the band will have another smash hit with mainstream appeal but it really doesn’t matter, does it? They had plenty of these songs and now they’re in a position where they can do whatever they want without having to worry about commercial success. The album is pretty much guaranteed to debut very high in numerous countries and they can sell out big stadiums. They’re in a phase in their career where other things are more important and it’s not like no one is listening to these songs. The general perception is a very positive one. Of course I want them to do well but in my opinion, they ARE doing well. It’s a good time to be a fan right now and that’s the most important thing.6 points

The “Oh I” in the bridge was just like the one in Forever Now (“Oh I, don’t want to think about tomorrow”) and also reminded me of The Longshot’s “Give It All To You” (“so when you fall asleep tonight…”) edit, just looked at the lyrics for the first time and realized it’s actually “oh why”6 points

The way he said, “Wow. Wow! Holy crap,” over and over and got excited about what was happening every 10 seconds was extremely relatable content. 😂6 points

The video definitely rewards repeat viewing so I’m not surprised it’s doing well out of the gate6 points

Been watching the video on repeat throughout the entire evening, with a bottle in hand. There's something about the song that gives off a positive vibe, like there is some hope for the endless struggle, some light at the end of the tunnel and the realization that it doesn't have to be that way. But on the other hand, that vibe is also getting smashed down by the despair of the drunk doing the same mistakes over and over again, and acting like an asshole, but never seeming to get enough of it. He doesn't want to be that (a dead man walking), but at the same time, he doesn't want to be dead inside (a dead man walking) without the poison - which he's so obsessing about - running through his veins. The vocals sound tired and strained, and if it were any other artist, I'd probably point that out as a negative thing. But especially the chorus in this, it's pure emotions. It adds so much to the overall vulnerability of the lyrics. It sounds like he's actually hopeless singing the chorus, but the hopelessness goes away by being able to sing it this way. To let it all out and focus on what's more important in life. I love the track. Cheers.6 points

I told my bf we can't go to his parents house for New Year's because Green Day is on TV 😂 He was very supportive.5 points

I see what you are saying and I think Green Day are past masters at taking a very serious subject and making it relatable or understandable for people. I think the video is open to interpretation. With no knowledge of Billie’s addiction you could just look at it as a fun video about partying hard and the consequences. I like that he is acting in this and he does a really good job, albeit he is portraying things he knows well. I also think and hope that it means he is doing well when he feels he can write, record, share and perform this song when clearly, for him it is very serious.5 points

Why you have to go and make gifs before meeeeee? But oh lord is Billie hot in this! Hoo boy! There is so much amazing gif material.5 points

Loving the doo-whoppy bridge. What a sweet candy hook followed by those drop D guitars.5 points

I love how they’ve had the videos ready for the release of the songs! Also one of my favorite Green Day riffs already. I think they could’ve played it for longer! But I guess that’s just going to make me want to play it over and over even more!5 points
-
Ya we’re in the same boat. I want this to be a smash hit for them. They deserve it, the songwriting has returned to where it needs to be. So far this is shaping up to possibly be the best post 21cb album.5 points
-
They haven't had a "mainstream smash hit" since at least 2009. Even if it's their most successful single post-21CB, that won't make it a smash hit. I think the days of Green Day "mainstream smash hits" is long gone5 points
-
I’m right there with you on this and my own journey - this song hit differently for sure just for how accurate it was. Also interesting to think about GD songs that surround this process and the order they appeared: lazy bones to still breathing to FOAMF (generally) to Holy Toledo! to Dilemma. All of these together really speak to this perpetual cycle and learning to live with addiction.5 points
-
They're really awesome and talented people I've been following for years, so it's really cool to see them working with the band doing such an awesome job!5 points
-
Absolutely adore the video. The transition from black and white to color… it’s SO refreshing to see them actually have a bold concept and run with it.5 points
-
Absolutely. FOAMF has probably one, two at a stretch acceptable songs on it and even then they're WAAAAY down the list of songs in their entire discography. Sorry, but the rest is just garbage and if it wasn't Green Day we'd all think the same. Title? Terrible. Production? Horrible. The artwork? Unforgivable. Then you get utterly woeful nonsense like Here Comes The Shock and I'm going "these guys are finished, they've properly lost it" Then they drop the Saviors singles. Maybe they just needed to get something middle aged out of their system, but I can't say I'm not annoyed about having to experience it. 😆4 points

And I think consistency is key. If you look at their best records most music videos were directed by the same guy. I think most of the 90s ones were the same dude right? You see consistency across dookie to some of warning atleast. AI had Sam who also did BIAB and I loved that he linked clips of that into the JOS music video. I guess somewhere around the trilogy the focus on consistency fell off. Maybe the deals fell through because timelines were shifted? But then that became Rev Rad and Foamf.. we do know the band was also trying to get out of their contract going back to post 21cb. I know we argue about this a lot but I think it’s clear their unhappiness with their deals took their hearts out of it for a while. Wirh Saviors I see a return to focus across the entire product. From the songs itself to the music videos. Now let’s see how they approach the shows. I assume the shows will change. This album has been received positively so they’ll incorporate it into their show. For a band in their 50s that is the measure of success. Not being a picture on a magazine or being in the top 40.4 points

Videos for the album thus far are fantastic, with Dilemma and American Dream being particularly epic!! The creativity and videography are top tier, and the consistency (black and white with more color added consecutively across the releases) yet style uniqueness of each of the three singles blows my mind.4 points

I cannot believe how good this is! Every song we've gotten so far has knocked it out of the park! What a top tier music video too!4 points

I kinda love that off key guitar note at the start, just before the chorus kicks in. It’s jarring but also fits with the theme. And the video is so fucking good, 100% up there with their best.4 points
