Drunk Billie ruined the release of two albums, postponed a tour, had a public breakdown and went to rehab. Nobody should "want" that back34 points
-
Besides just loving the guitar on this song and the sound mixing. I went to treatment for alcoholism in August, relapsed in October and went back to treatment. I just got out of that rehab yesterday and moved into sober living. Hell, I just left my day treatment meeting and put on this song for the first time. I’m in love with it.30 points

Honestly, kudos to Billie for doing this song and video. I remember him saying back in the Revarad days that it’s scary writing songs that come from a personal place, but I think the song did a great job at detailing the struggles of addiction. i first listened on Spotify and thought it was fine, but one the second listen while watching the music video, i got goosebumps. Truly a great video26 points

After having that public breakdown at the end of the Trilogy and going to rehab and stuff, I really admire everything you're bringing up in this post. It's honest and open and catchy and succinct without coming across as cheap. It's what gives the song such a strong backbone -- it's like a hug from a friend who knows you know what's wrong. Like so many of us who struggle with addiction, I've grown up with Green Day, so this song is a very comforting thing in a not so comforting time of my life haha. Really disgusting post, bud.20 points

The way that video goes from his perspective where everything’s light and fun to everyone else’s perspective where he’s just a mess is uh. Stunning. What an amazing video.19 points

Well tomorrow at 9 I know i'm gonna need to take a big shit in the bathroom at work because I don't want to miss this while working.18 points

Apart from the beautifully honest, fantastically shot video and the great lyrics, can we please worship for a minute how hard this song ROCKS OMG. The "dead man walking"-scream-part is just SICK.17 points

Still Breathing is the most obvious comparison here, but I think it’s really interesting to compare this to Lazy Bones. Lazy Bones is such an amazing song that really disturbingly captures the mindset addiction comes with, but a less realistic one: “I don’t want your sympathy, I don’t want your honesty, I just wanna get some peace of mind.” It’s a neat juxtaposition from, “welcome to my problems, it’s not an invitation.”15 points

That’s the Dilemma in a nutshell. I think having been back and forth a few times now since 2012, he’s more honest about it now than he was then when he sounded like he was over and done with that life forever. Now he has enough experience to know he can’t say that as much as he’d like to. All he can do is keep trying.15 points

I'm so freaking excited for this album. I haven't been this excited for new Green Day since RevRad. I love this feeling. This era is gonna be amazing.15 points
-
OMG that video. Really brave of him I’m surprised they went there. Unfortunately he does a great job acting wasted. This would have been harder to watch during FOAM but hopefully he’s okay now so it’s just raw honesty. Love the song15 points

Yes he was very sick at that time and almost died. So no we want healthy Billie.14 points

@pacejunkie punk YOU'RE DARN TOOTIN I'M EXCITED FOR KEVIN! I nearly screamed when I saw him! Seriously fucking love this song. It's so fucking good! I was smiling like an idiot the entire time I listened. It rocks so hard. And I love this video. Love the perspective and the way things shift from having a great time to having a terrible time. This may be my favorite single so far. The videos for this era have been really strong. During a time where Music videos aren't held in the same regard as they once were im glad to see Green Day is putting some effort into theirs. Really loving this era so far.14 points

Me, going to bed tonight knowing we get a new Green Day song in the morning.14 points

Beautifully said. This video is so raw and painfully honest. It takes a crazy amount of courage to be like “honestly, this is something I always want deep down and my addiction tells me is fun, but the reality is I end up feeling awful and look like a disaster to everyone around me.” Still Breathing was also really personal and was probably humbling, but it’s more removed from the situation than this is.13 points

The dead man walking scream gives me goosebumps every time. The videos take these songs to a whole new level. Best they've had since AI13 points

It releases in like an hour, why is everyone thirsting after this leak? Go and have a bath or something and by the time you've pruned up you can listen to it.13 points

LOVE how the solo starts of so melodic then builds the tensions and gives the vibe something is going wrong11 points

It is really cool that all three singles are so different in sound and lyrical content. I think this will be a “something for everyone” kind of album, which is exciting because when I think of songs that “sound like Green Day,” a few different sounds come to mind depending on the era. This album feels like it will be a fitting celebration of their entire career so far.11 points

Man that doesn't even take a second listen. It's their best song in 20 years. I fucking knew I was gonna love this one. Video is also top 5 easy. THEY'RE BACK.11 points

Been watching the video on repeat throughout the entire evening, with a bottle in hand. There's something about the song that gives off a positive vibe, like there is some hope for the endless struggle, some light at the end of the tunnel and the realization that it doesn't have to be that way. But on the other hand, that vibe is also getting smashed down by the despair of the drunk doing the same mistakes over and over again, and acting like an asshole, but never seeming to get enough of it. He doesn't want to be that (a dead man walking), but at the same time, he doesn't want to be dead inside (a dead man walking) without the poison - which he's so obsessing about - running through his veins. The vocals sound tired and strained, and if it were any other artist, I'd probably point that out as a negative thing. But especially the chorus in this, it's pure emotions. It adds so much to the overall vulnerability of the lyrics. It sounds like he's actually hopeless singing the chorus, but the hopelessness goes away by being able to sing it this way. To let it all out and focus on what's more important in life. I love the track. Cheers.10 points

Woah, this song and especially the video is so brave. It must be SO hard to deal with your problems in such an open, honest way. It must feel like standing naked in a crowded room. Still Breathing had a very similar spirit to me, but it was more a retrospective - looking back on hard times from a different perspective. This new one is like he's allowing people to have a look into a struggle that is still real, still there. I LOVE THE SONG!10 points

I love the shift to colour too when it changes to the reality of the situation, looks so vibrant10 points

Really love that you pointed this out, because I didn’t pick up on the double meaning there. He weaves this duality of addiction throughout the song in different ways: in trouble/in love, nightmare/dreams, despair/obsession. Very thought provoking.9 points

I always listen to a song first before watching the video, because I don’t want the video to put any ideas in my head about how to interpret it and as you said, sometimes videos can detract from the song. But this one does the opposite — it really strengthens the message!9 points
-
Love it, the music video is so real, funny and scary at the same time. Really cool concept.9 points

Well said. I know it’s something he has struggled with since the 90s, but I think his first long stretch of being sober and then experiencing an equally long stretch of drinking before getting sober again more recently probably gave him the perspective to realize that it’s lifelong work and there will be ups and downs.9 points

Good song! I initially set my alarm so I could listen as soon as it came out but I woke up around 730 and turned it off and decided to go back to bed... Then at like 9:07 my cat woke me up, I guess Smithers is a bigger Green Day fan than me cuz he really wanted to hear it! 😂 Also, the "dead man walking" line continues the zombie theme lol9 points

Okay LOVE LOVE LOVE the new video! A couple of Fangirl thoughts I had while watching: - Opening with floofy Billie hair!! Yasss! - KEVIN?! HI KEVIN! - Red shirt Billie? Yes please give me more! - Billie looks so cute falling over - Fuck, Billie looks good in the video! - Kevin! Stop being a naughty boy doing coke in the bathroom!! Phew...this new era got me like 🥵9 points

Thats, substantially not the point of this song. and no you don’t wanna get drunk every night9 points

Oh? They're performing as The Coverups that night, right? This must be taped a few days before then? Either way, exciting!8 points

I think Green Day made a great move hiring the Baxleys for their videos this cycle. All of the videos have had a really clear artistic vision and were very well executed. They each told a story of the song that helped elevate it. As art, they complement the songs in the way that videos should at their best. By contrast, the FOAM videos were a mess. The scrapped FOAM video led to a boring performance shoot with B roll that did nothing for the song. Oh Yeah was okay, but it didn’t help me to understand what the song was about very much, and FRA was basically hockey promo. Without one directing team behind all the videos, the results lacked cohesion. What we’re seeing now is something completely different, similar to the way Sam Bayer made a great collection of videos for AI that all went together. Hats off to Alice and Ryan Baxley and welcome to the Green Day fam!8 points

I have to listen to the song a couple more times but I like it so far. Not sure if it’s better than the previous two singles but that’s honestly a good sign because all three songs we got so far are very good. And I like that they’re so different from one another, both musically as well as lyrically. This one is obviously extremely personal while TADIKM was more political and LMNB was just fun. So yeah, I’m super excited about the album and honestly, this looks more promising than anything they have done in a long time.8 points

Appreciating the diversity of this album while still sounding good. - American Dream feels like AI/21CB - Look Ma feels like Insomniac - Dilemma feels like Nimrod/Trilogy8 points

They probably tracked the demo with him before realising it sounded like 3 middle aged men making boomer garage rock knock offs with extra hand claps and decided to give it to daddy Rob Cavallo to make it into a fucking absolute HEATER.8 points

it's lovely to see Jason White and Kevin Preston in the music video too is jason freeze in there too ? because i can't find him8 points
-
With what little we knew of the song before it came out, I think I had a bit of fear that the lyrics wouldn’t take the issue seriously, or that the video would minimize it (probably still residual FOAM anxiety, lol). I could not have been more wrong about that, and I’m glad.7 points

What is more possible? dookielukie liking a new green day song or billie joe becoming a donald trump fan? 😅 this song is the best they released since american idiot.7 points

Straight from the heart and from experience. It's hard, but honest, and probably not easy. The sound gives me early 2000 vibes, it sounds a bit like a typical Sum 41 song from that time, but also it's not. Fucking amazing.7 points

Sorry, just cottoned on. Fucking hell lads that’s really teaser #9! You know how long I’ve waited to hear the song from Teaser #9? I dunno, when did Teaser #9 come out? Ages ago FFS. I’ve said it on here probably 5 times (that’s like 8.1% of my entire post history) how much I love Teaser #9. Absolutely fucking gassed man.7 points
