It was explicitly for putting it on AAF. When they played it the first time in Denver Billie Joe said “hey I wanna tell you something, we’re recording a live fucking album right now! So we’re going to play a brand new song. But it ain’t that brand new, this song’s called Cigarettes and Valentines”. Then I lost my goddamn mind and had something close to a heart attack.
They actually played it five times (Denver through to Mountain View) and I think it must have been with the intention of putting it on the live album which became Awesome as Fuck. It's the recording from the Phoenix show on the album.
This is the song I’m looking forward to the most, so I made a cover of it a few months ago

They were going to re-record Cigarettes and Valentines again for 2022 or 2023 but it just wasn't up to their standards, even with substantial rewrites and renames. And when someone stole the masters, they decided 1972 was dead. But immediately after scrapping it, they banged out a new album in two weeks that is better.
I thought it was a really interesting article, Larry still asks the best questions, possibly because he has known them so long. We have always known Billie keeps an eye on the crowd, but that was so interesting about his rationale for throwing in hey oohs which I know a lot of us wish he would do less of.
