Compared to the RevRad release party it was a letdown. Back then they played five or six songs from the album. Here they only played the same two singles from FOAM, made pretty glaring mistakes on about half the songs they did play, and pivoted to The Coverups with Dancing With Myself. They didn't seem to enjoy the interview all that much either. Then they moved to a private party that night and had a rip roaring good time. I just want Billie to keep writing about what he's feeling in the moment, whatever that is. They got so pegged as a political band but really they never were. They were politcally conscious because of where they came from, but all of Billie's songs, even the "political" ones, come from a personal place.8 points

Green Day hasn't played an album in its entirety since 21CB. What makes you think that they'd do it for 1972? Especially considering they've almost entirely just been playing their greatest hits for the past 2 years with very few exceptions2 points

The Coverups are a good time. It may be the same old covers they always play, but they're so relaxed and having so much fun it's a cool vibe.2 points

I wish I could go to this, it feels good to at least know some people here are going2 points

Iâm happy with social commentary, and a leaning towards politics. I think Billie Joeâs writing is at itâs best when something is burning within him, whether thatâs love for Adie, hatred for Tim Yohannon and George Bush or whatever. He needs something to focus on and it feels like there could be plenty of material currently for him to work with.2 points

That doesnât bother me honestly. Itâs shite because I still to this day could not actually tell you what the song was about (and I put Fire, Ready, Aim in that same category). Not even a little as a treat?1 point

I would be a happy lil nimrod if 1972 turned out to be the heaviest green day album to date. Gimme some 1039 smooth style solos Billie (or Jason)1 point

And I'm pretty sure there would be secret shows around that time as well where they play the album in its entirety1 point

I'm thinking it'll be a 1972 tour. I'm sure they enjoyed Hella Mega, but they might be itching to do a good ol classic Green Day show soon.1 point

No. And his comment about the last show wasnât a hint of anything either1 point

I love your enthusiasm, but you really are grasping at straws at this point dude. I mean, Billie could just fart and y'all would probably think it's some kind of hint towards the next album đ1 point

Even if that was true, it still suggests that the band values their greatest hits over their new music. Really Green Day has felt like a legacy band since RevRad. The trilogy was the last time where I feel like the band was really into what they were doing, were pushing themselves, were being ambitious. RevRad was a really solid album but it felt familiar, there wasn't anything too different, there wasn't the ambition behind that project that their last few had and they didn't play the new songs from that album as much as they played the new songs from their last few albums on the following tour. For RevRad, they played 5-6 songs off the album live regularly and 3 songs never got played at all despite the album only being 12 songs long. For the trilogy, 21CB and AI, they played at least 7-8 songs regularly and every song from AI/21CB got at least a few plays. Only 5 trilogy songs were never played live. The whole FOAMF era seems completely like the era you'd expect from a legacy band. FOAMF using the AI cover for its cover, not playing the new songs, only playing the hits, not really talking about the new album. Maybe the 1972 era will be different from FOAMF. But they'll still be a legacy band and there isn't anything wrong with that1 point

I think youâre misunderstanding what a legacy act is. WWWY is literally a festival of legacy acts, hence the title. Legacy acts can still sell out tours, stadiums and headline festivals. It doesnât mean a band is âoverâ or âdownâ or that they suck. It just means that their most popular and best music is behind them and theyâve amassed enough of a back catalog that they can 100% live off it and tour off it. When every tour becomes a greatest hits tour and youâre no longer playing or promoting your latest music much because most fans donât care to hear it, you might be a legacy act. It doesnât mean youâre no longer loved, but you are loved more for your past accomplishments. Most bands never achieve enough to have a legacy. GD are one of the lucky few.1 point
-
I think itâs safe to declare theyâre a legacy act at this point.1 point
-
If an anniversary release of their third best-selling album takes priority over new music, Green Day is officially a legacy act.1 point

I can forgive the trilogy for this, I think they needed to take a step back and just make some GD songs rather than try and take over the world with some concept. But they kinda fucked that up by trying to make it a trilogy. The volume of work made it complicated to digest despite them moving to a more simple formula. Rev Rad wasn't cohesive but showed moments that they still have it should they wish to tap into it. As for Foam it actually sounds like they called Butch Walker and they phoned it in and he recorded the phone lol At this point they should take their time on albums like Social Distortion does. I'm in no rush to see Green Day live for a while. They play the same 20 songs over and over now and no new songs can make the setlist. The whole point of making albums like AI and 21CB was to compliment their setlist and grow their live show.1 point

The honesty doesnât tend to come out until the next cycle so Iâm curious if weâll get some truths about FOAM once theyâre discussing the new album and contrasting it with what they did previously. Thatâs usually when they backtrack.1 point

I don't think it's an issue of band members not giving a shit. I mean Mike has taken a backseat since American Idiot, playing more of a supporting role to the point where I don't think he really knows how to do what he was doing back in the 90's for the new albums. That's not to say that he's not capable of writing good basslines, the trilogy had a bunch of them but more often than not he's more in the background and that's his comfort zone. Billie Joe I think has always gave a shit about Green Day's new music but I think he's sort of been unsure of what to do with Green Day, which direction to take it whether to go with a more Foxboro sound, a more American Idiot sound, experiment more etc. Why do you think that they've been alternating between the "American Idiot" sound (AI, 21CB, RevRad) and the "Foxboro" sound (SD&R, trilogy, FOAM) for every album since American Idiot. Also, when an album doesn't perform as well I think he tends to distance himself from it somewhat. After the trilogy bombed, he started the RevRad promo by saying the trilogy had "absolutely no direction to them" and were an attempt at being "prolific for the sake of it" but I think the trilogy was important to him as he continued to play some of those songs under The Longshot where fans would be more accepting of hearing trilogy songs and with FOAMF they have avoided performing it or really even talking about it.1 point

I actually think RevRad was the closest they came since 21CB to having that full passion. I will say there was nothing truly spectacular about that album, but it does seem like they made some effort to create some sort of common theme throughout the album, and the lyrics did have some meaning to them. The reason I like it so much as an album is because they showed their love and care for the songs by playing many of them during their concerts and playing with passion. I canât make any true determinations from the teasers whether they have a lot of passion behind this album or not, but if itâs true that they have been going into the studio for this long (minus touring time), it seems like they are taking time on this one, which HOPEFULLY means playing around with songs until they work.1 point

Man, listening to the new RHCP albums this year really makes me wish the entire band cared as much as the chili peppers do when it comes to new music. You can tell each member of the band is really trying to bring something to the table and I haven't felt that way for a green day album since American idiot or maybe 21st. Not to say they don't care entirely but there are parts that feel very I don't know phoned in. Every album. Be it either Mike's bass line, to Billies songwriting, to the production it feels like they aren't ever as Mike would put it "firing on ALL cylinders." There's always one or two cylinders that arnt going off at any giving point lol. I'd say, and this is sheer speculation in my end, but Tre is the only one who actually gives a shit completely for every album Here's to hoping 1972 has the missing passion1 point
