Icon award is presented in recognition of the band’s longevity and legacy as one of the greatest and most important acts in the history of rock and alternative music, who still captivate and electrify millions of fans all over the world with the power of punk rock.” Since their rough-and-ready debut 39/Smooth back in 1990, Green Day have got on to sell over 70 million records across the world, including over 10 million for the era-defining Dookie. On top of appearing at the K! Awards, they’ll be levelling stadiums across the UK from June 24 with Fall Out Boy, Weezer and Amyl And The Sniffers for the long-awaited Hella Mega Tour. The Kerrang! I honestly don't think it's a pipe dream. It seemed from the start that the intent of Hella Mega was to be a 1990s and mid-2000s nostalgia trip for 30-50 year olds now with disposable income to come out and enjoy the greatest hits from the pop rock bands they listened to in middle school, high school, and college. There was absolutely zero chance Green Day would come out and play deep cuts and songs from their latest album that A) Likely no one in the audience purchased/listened to and B) Was heavily insinuated by the band to be a throwaway album. Whenever <insert next album name> releases and the band has their own tour(s) in support of it, I would be shocked if we didn't return to the more dynamic setlists and ones that don't overtly pander to the "Oh, Green Day, I like their 'I Walk Alone' song from high school dances" crowds. Will they still play the hits? Of course; there will never be a tour show where the band doesn't play "Basket Case", "Good Riddance", etc. As much as they like their music, I'd have to imagine they're more than ready to switch things up. Unless more dates get announced, there's hopefully about one month left of this (god forbid it extends into this fall's lineup of festivals). --- I probably come across as overly dramatic and ungrateful, which is not what I am. If I could, would I go to every one of these shows and listen to the same setlist at each stop? Heck yes; I love this band and their music and could never get sick of it. I think I'm just more ready for something meaningful again from them.

I’d hardly call it an era lol they played Father of All and Oh Yeah like a handful of times and Fire Ready Aim once or twice and Billie did the acoustic performance of Graffitia and then the album never existed again. Hella Mega is a greatest hits tour for them and FOAM never really got a tour. Personally I’m sick of hearing the same songs every time I see them and I’m really hoping we can go to the 21CB era style where there was a different set each night. But it’s a pipe dream and even though I love them I really don’t think they know what they’re doing anymore.

I don’t know. It seems to me that they’ve decided to go the way of legacy milking that allows them to play large events and they need their hit setlist for that. I don’t expect much of a change when they play festivals and the other events they are currently booked for. What happens next tour probably depends on if they deem their new music worth playing live. Maybe they will, maybe not.

I certainly hope they do, but I doubt it. Most big rock artists reach the point in their careers where it’s about preserving legacy, and the setlists reflect that. These shows just aren’t for us, they’re for the regular people who like the band from the radio hits. Which is okay for large venues but I do wish they’d do a small theater tour for us where they could really play whatever they wanted. But maybe they’re too big for that now, I dunno.

He could bite the bullet and get a teleprompter. I can see why he’d be reluctant to do that, but if it meant they could play more recent songs/have more varied setlists, it would be worth it and probably also easier to do for him.

100% in agreement with you. Some of the shows on this tour seem to be just pure headline sets so the fact that they play NGFL the other night in Copenhagen is something I guess 🤪 God I remember when I saw them in Milan in 2017 they played Scattered and Christie Road! 😍

That seems like a really bizarre choice. I wouldn't think that would be a song most non-Green Day fans would know, let alone have as a favorite.

Yes, it would definitely be a big change and it’s possible he’s putting it off for the stage of the career when he’s not running that much anymore, but he probably wouldn’t have to use it all the time and if it’d help to get us a few deep cuts every show, it would be a good deal - we could handle him not running around for a few songs. But I see that maybe there’s a worry that the show would lose momentum. He uses a tablet that someone brings for the KISS cover, right? It seems to work for him well enough that he’s able to read from it… they could just give it a permanent spot on stage… or they could get a few and put one on the catwalk too so he’s not glued to the one he has. IMO if this is an issue for him, there should be way to find a good solution.

I think they’ve done what most other people have done - started treating it like any other disease. With cuts on restrictions and testing, chances are that these days most cases go undetected. It’s very well possible he gets it and never finds out, the fans he’s kissed will have a cold for a few days, but you know, it’s June, it could be some allergy.

Hope Jakob recovers quick, I’m seeing them here next Tuesday. The Interrupters just had to cancel their next four appearances due to covid. Seeing them at the end of the month I hope. With Billie back to kissing fans on the lips it’ll be a miracle if he doesn’t get it. How’d they go from so many restrictions last summer to absolutely nothing now? They don’t care anymore if these shows get canceled?

It would be, but it would also inhibit his ability to move around the stage a bit, and he would need a pretty big scrolling font to see without his glasses. It would be an adjustment for sure. He’s already been using one for the KISS cover.

Just saw Jakob has 'fallen ill' and Ultra Q are cancelling their Boston show. Hopefully it's nothing serious and he'll be okay. It was too clickbaitish to hear the actual clip, but I saw where Pierre from Simple Plan said "If Green Day put out an album, I want it to sound like Green Day". Since I couldn't get the context, I assume he is just talking about how Simple Plan's new album is a return to form and he's not bashing FOAM or anything. He's a Green Day fan, so I think that makes sense.

Would love to see more of the old stuff, some trilogy and from form Graffitia. Maybe even a Mother Mary cover. Saw them in San Jose in 2009 and Billie Joe did a little bit of Mother Mary.
