No matter how hard my brother protests that he doesn't like Green Day, I saw how he stayed to watch the American Idiot music video on the TV and then left once it had finished2 points

The issues people have with the Trilogy are myriad and complex, ranging from the weak drums over ridiculous lyrics to generally disregarding anything of the era because of the stuff that happened. Some people clearly expected too much after the lyrical porn of 21CB, so they were bound to be disappointed. Yet most qualms with the three records contain (a kernel of) truth. The vocal filters were excessive and served no clear purpose when compared to their use on AI and 21CB. The overall sound, both vocally and instrumentally is too clean and Tré's drums don't get the justice they deserve. Then the lyrics of some songs were random as fuck (Nuclear Family, Dirty Rotten Bastards) or straight out cringeworthy (Troublemaker). This doesn't pertain so much to Dos!, which can be excused from this criticism due to it being the second, dirty Foxboro Hot Tubs album, as to Uno! and Tré! which both lack focus and suffer from some songs with sometimes uninspired and boring lyrics (Oh Love, 99 Revolutions) and just feel as though their track list is completely random. Tré! especially suffers from this inconsistency, though it's in my humble opinion lyrically and generally by far the most impressive of the three records. They are a decent product of pills and alcohol, but not from a band which stormed the stage with Dookie, crowned themselves king of contemporary rock with American Idiot and showed that 'simple' songs are at their best coupled with a more rough sound (Kerplunk, Demolicious). I think the Trilogy would have been better received if the sound was grittier, the writing tighter and less throwaway, the bass and drum more prominent and the track lists less randomly thrown together the way they were. Of course it was doomed by iHeart, but things went awry much sooner.2 points

There's probably some of both. But implying that everyone who didn't like them didn't like them for that reason will understandably put people's backs up I dunno, I've seen a whole lot of complaining about the message/themes. People are allowed to dislike albums for whatever reason anyway so , but it does sometimes surprise me the amount of Green Day fans who dislike or aren't really into the less serious/more fun or silly or risque stuff they do.2 points

I get your point. Personally I like it a lot better since I decided to stop taking it seriously. I can say I reconciled after I heard Bang Bang and world became ok again2 points
-
That's cool! I think it's catchy enough to do well as a single. Once I turned on the radio at the ungodly hour of 5:45 AM and State Of Shock was playing, it was so random and it made my day2 points

I didn't know that was a thing, lol! Adorable. "I am character approved, personality not so approved"2 points

Spot on! It's always amazed me how many tracks on Nimrod don't get the attention or praise they deserve.2 points

Missing You is great! I like every song on Tre, that is a golden album to me. That song is well put together, with the drum fills, bass lines and very relatable lyrics. Was very good live too, it may very well return to the set someday! Love when he sneaks in that subtle "and I'm a fuckin' disaster", pleases my ears immensely.2 points

I'd complain about KFAD and threaten that I'll throw a fit if they don't play me Scattered and Stuart. Edit: i wanted to say I'd complain about KYE. Nevermind - I complain about both1 point
-
Same. I'd only complain about the lack of 21CB, No One Knows, Worry Rock, Jinx/Haushinka and Church on Sunday and Misery. However, as long as they play Forever Now live, I'll be in heaven.1 point

Exactly But, I heard Revolution Radio a good few times just randomly (in a restaurant, on a bus etc.) so that made me happy1 point

yeah and 21 Guns and AI. And that's almost about it I hear a lot of their songs on rock stations but as mainstream stations are concerned, these four are everything.1 point
-
Yeah, I think it might be the most known and played GD song here, along with BOBD.1 point

You're welcome, a writer I follow on FB shared it otherwise I wouldn't have found it . I didn't know this either but I'm not surprised as it still gets a lot of airplay so it kind of makes sense. It's the song people know as well.1 point

I'd love it if the sound wasn't so sterile. I like the albums but the fact that they sound like robots puts me off a bit.1 point
-
Aw that's nice! Thanks for posting, I'd never see it otherwise. And I didn't know the song got to the top of the charts just in this country, that's interesting.1 point

A Czech Internet show "song stories" made an episode about Wake Me Up When September Ends. https://www.stream.cz/pribeh-pisne/10015233-green-day-wake-me-up-when-september-ends1 point

I think I'd probably cave in and have a look, I couldn't help myself For Dublin in June, there's a few songs I would definitely hope to see on the setlist, but I just hope there's representation from all of Green Day's discography!!1 point

These songs were used in the films then later made it on to Shenanigans, rather than being picked for the films from Shenanigans. It makes sense to put these 'one-off' songs on a B-sides compilation - you wouldn't expect to find the Simpsons theme on 21CB, or even on an international superhits 2. These songs are deeper cuts. I do agree that they're great songs though, I think Espionage is even my brother's favourite GD song.1 point

In Jaded (the very first line), I always hear "Somebody take my pants". I can't unhear it.1 point

I saw a few of the Trilogy shows and aside from Brutal Love I'd have to say Stray Heart was the best one that they played live. So let's not forget that one... I love your list though- from the songs that I saw them play live, I'd say that I'd love to see the following (in order): Brutal Love- one of their best Stray Heart- great live and they have a lot of fun live while Mike plays that awesome bass line Stay The Night- just a great, classic GD song Carpe Diem- they played a half step down on their old guitars when I saw this (in the middle of a bunch of Dookie songs) and it sounded awesome, SWTRLF- good energy live, although they have so many awesome live songs I wouldn't be too disappointed if they left this off1 point

Oh that's hilarious to picture him sitting there reading about himself on message boards...although I could see those conversations happening here 😂1 point

Troublemaker is less worse than Nightlife and Lady Cobra. Those songs were awful even for FBHT-recasts. The second half of Nimrod is indeed seriously underrated and underplayed. It's always Nice Guys, Hitchin', Scattered or sometimes Redundant or All the Time. Jinx/Haushinka is just awesome. My own unpopular opinion: Warning is overall a stronger album than Insomniac. EDIT: I still want Take Back live. Do it guys.1 point
-
Reject is fucking amazing, easily one of Nimrod's best.1 point

I feel the same. Walking Alone is my favorite song lately. I love the lyrics and can relate to it. I love the harmonica too. It's just a great overall song, as is Jinks, Reject and the second half of Nimrod as you said.1 point
-
IDK if this is unpopular but Walking Alone and Reject are awesome. I feel like the entire second half of Nimrod never gets talked about (Except for Good Riddance of course).1 point
-
Haha. Insomniac has the least discernible lyrics of all Green Day albums. To this day I'm humming along to Armatage Shanks if I don't have the lyrics next to me.1 point
-
Insomniac has been my favorite album for like 10 years now and I still don't even know every word Billie is saying. That's part of what makes the album so fun! I was jamming it in my car and I couldn't help but laugh because I was singing gibberish at times haha When you actually read the lyrics though it's like discovering a whole new world and makes me love Insomniac even more. Dookie has quite a few lyrics that I never got right too, even to this day. I remember when I was younger, I used to say "Is she ultra-violet, is she disturbed" in Pulling Teeth. Because that makes perfect sense1 point

Missing You could have been a good choice for the third single of Trè, after the unlucky and meaningful X-Kid and the nostalgic The Forgotten. If you think about, Missing You has all the characteristics to be a potential hit: - Catchy as hell; - Radio-friendly lyrics; - Fuckin' good bass riff in the bridge. Decision like not releasing this song made the Trilogy unsuccessful and full of "secret beautiful songs" to discover only if you buy the album.1 point

I've been a fan for 20 years and I love the trilogy. During American idot and breakdown era I just wished they would go back to just playing regular songs and being green day. And when I heard uno I feel like we got that old band back. If you put trilogy songs between nimrod and warning or between warning and American idiot Ina playlist they fit perfectly . We got so much green day at one time it was fuckin awesome and they didnt need promotion who cares how well these albums sell we the fans buy them and I bought them and enjoyed them and still enjoy them and that's all that counts . Fuck album sales why does anyone here care? And they did do promotion for the album's there was plenty of interviews or TV appearances wether they were concerts or playing VMAs or good morning America. Not like theyre really doing that much more this time around either. Also the shows from 2013 kick-ass. I'm kinda disappointed they're not playing any trilogy songs this time around.1 point

Everytime my mind tries to dislike Trilogy, I always remember myself: "Hey, little kid, if you had never heard Stray Heart that day on MTV you would not be here writing this". Trilogy is 1/4 of my life. Just this.1 point
