I'm not sure if anyone has already said this, but the lyrics You-Tube video has now reached over 3 million views (around 3.1 Mio) and though the daily rate of views has gone down, according to the statistics it's still gaining about 200'000 views a day.6 points

So most songs are shitty in your opinion, because lots of songs have debates over lyrical meaning (thus the lyric meaning websites, etc). You'd rather a song like "Work" by Rihanna where the subjects goes no deeper than talking about work? A TON of songs "click" when you know the lyrical context. "How to Save a Life" by the Fray is super touching when you realize it's written about kid's at an at risk suicide camp. "Semi-Charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind is a jumble of words until you realize it's about meth addiction. "Hotel California" is essentially a jumble of lyrical statements, but it using a setting to make a statement on greed. "Blackbird" by the Beatles is a song about a bird that symbolizes the Civil Rights Movement. I could go on and on. Again, you're making really dumb statements that make you look like you have no idea what you're talking about. Once again you're dismissing thousands of songs based on some stupid criteria just so you can be a contrarian. My question is why you're even on this forum. You clearly just want to piss people off and be an outsider. You're not even subtle about it. Go to reddit and be a contrarian like everybody else. I'm cool with dissenting opinions and a variety of opinions, but you cannot present your opinion in a non-confrontational, normal way.4 points

Seriously, what kind of problem does UG have with Green Day? They never say a good thing about them...the coke thing sounds like something Ceadog would write on gdc.3 points

Bang Bang is pretty damn catchy if you ask me I've been singing it all the time, it's stuck in my head probably 24/7 and I don't even notice it anymore, it's just there. It's not a song you listen to once or twice and move on, you have to play it often and fucking loud and if you don't play it your head will do it for you3 points

to you, perhaps, but you do understand how subjective that phrase is, right? It's not that there's nothing catchy, it's that you just don't like the melody. It is soundly more well received by fans/media than Oh Love was, so while you personally can say you don't find it catchy, it matters little.3 points

Insomniac has complex lyrics FILLED with metaphors. Armatage Shanks, Geek Stink Breath, Panic Song, Jaded, Westbound Sign, Walking Contradiction: all lyrically filled with metaphors and quite mature compared to Dookie. Nimrod has some lyrical blunders, but great songs there. Hitchin' a Ride is full of cool plays on words that convey multiple meanings (Cold turkey's gettin' stale, tonight I'm eating crow). Prosthetic Head is a violent take on vanity and image. The problem with the Trilogy wasn't that the lyrics weren't political and complex. I'd argue that 21CB was a bit too complex lyrically. The problem with the Trilogy was that none of the lyrics made you think or really went beyond surface level, and none of them had any classic Green Day humor or perspective. Even Dookie songs had deeper meanings and clever deliveries.3 points

To be honest, they're some of my favorite GD lyrics simply because of how ludicrous they are.2 points

LOL rude. You know people can voice their opinions too you know. If that is annoying to you, you guys are far more worst. So I really suggest you move on because it is off topic now on a brand new day and get over it because I don't care!2 points

This new post on UG blows yet another bit from the Kerrang interview out of proportion and says that Billie Joe was spaced out on coke during trilogy. Um, he explicitly said it was booze in pills, where the fuck are you getting cocaine from?2 points

yeah I knew about FBHT. Dookie was definitely analog, and I'm assuming that Insomniac was too. I bet nimrod was also tape. I know there's a tape machine in one of the studios at Jingletown. I could see them not using it with the trilogy because there's too many songs and tape would be a pain in the ass, but it would have been cool if they used it on revrad. digital's come a long way though. I know I'm in the minority but i love the mix on bang bang. I don't care that the vocals are low, I think the drums sound great, especially the kick and the toms. The snare's not as crisp as some of their older recordings but i think it sounds fine. The bass sounds a little muddy though, one thing i liked about the trilogy was the bass tone. The guitars sound fine but they're not my favorite. I liked the guitar tone on insomniac a lot but I thought they needed to be louder. I LOVE how the guitar sound on hitchin a ride. the guitars were kind of all over the place in nimrod though2 points

Most likely Dookie or Insomniac was the last Green Day album to be purely analog FBHT was the last GD related to be done analog pro tools became more common in major studios around 95/96 altho a lot of bands/producers still stuck with tape or DA88 or Adats for a while so it really depends on the band and what Rob chose to work with I'm assuming Nimrod was done on pro tools due to how fast they did the strings Rob said it took him only 2-3 takes in 20-30 mins2 points

I honestly do think the trilogy is one of my favorite GD releases. It might be up there with AI for me, really. I still listen to it all the time and think it is criminally underrated.2 points

Exactly. I wonder if this much time will be devoted to complaining about every ridiculous aspect imaginable of every other song on the album. Too many unhappy people on this site who need a trip to Disneyland2 points
-
Also, in response to many posters here, Billie's lyrics (especially those seemingly nonsensical metaphors) make sense pretty much always if you're willing to think about it. I think what I want to emphasize is just because we don't get a line, doesn't mean it doesn't make sense, it just means we don't get it yet.2 points

I absolutely agree with you that Bang Bang lyrics are much stronger than all of the trilogy lyrics in a political or social sense, there's no doubt about that. And that's exactly what I've been missing in the last couple of years, because I personally love that! But I don't think that all trilogy-lyrics are weak or too simple, some of them are very personal, and that makes them special and valuable from a different perspective. For example, in Little Boy Named Train: "I'm always lost and nothing will change. Give me directions and I'll get lost again." That line simply broke my heart. Not to mention Lazy Bones, which deals so obviously with Billie's personal problems.2 points

When I was imagining how a music video for Bang Bang would look. I instantly thought it be cool to have something that is like a cross between Red hot Chili peppers Californication video, call of duty and GTA.1 point

Was at a bar on the beach last night listening to a bunch of lame stuff (they usually only play reggae or "island" music everywhere in Hawaii) suddenly East Jesus Nowhere came on and they blasted it. It was awesome.1 point

Probably. This is a forum, people talk and discuss stuff. If we all just shut up until the songs are released then where's the fun? Are you always this annoying1 point
-
Sorry for being like the 100th person quoting this, but it's quite clear you are here only to annoy people. Once you can't win an argument about the lyrics not being simple you switch to the song not being catchy. Maybe you should just switch to a different topic where you can express something more positive, I'm sure it will be good for yourself as well.1 point

I rotate my favorites- Kerplunk may be my top album for a while, then I'll get into a groove with 21CB for a couple months, for example. I've gone through some phases over the last 3 years where the Trilogy was my top choice. No album is ever my permanent favorite, because at different times I tend to listen more heavily to one over the other. The Trilogy has been my favorite a few different times since its release, so I guess you could count me as someone who prefers it from time to time. Not now though, I've been really into Nimrod again for the last few months...and the last couple weeks I've been kind of transitioning back into Insomniac. How's that for a totally hedged answer?1 point

Simple lyrics don't equal good lyrics, except maybe for people who are too lazy to give thought to the song. Simply lyrics are fine generally but you get bored with them way too fast. Guess why so many people (except for you obviously) think the trilogy was ... not that good. I'm glad you actually have to think about their songs for a while to understand them fully. Bang Bang is better as it is than how it would be with simple lyrics. That would be way too easy... Saying they're shitty is a bit passionate, don't you think? If thinking about the song is too much for you, don't overstrain yourself and listen to the trilogy instead Being able to debate about art is what makes it good in my opinion. Imagine going into a gallery and knowing instantly what all the artworks are about after giving them one glance? How fucking boring would that be?1 point

My take on it was possibly it was a shooter testifying in court (obviously following the act) and as he is testifying he is reliving the memory of the event and enjoying it like a lullaby to send him off to sleep. Especially as the next line is "broadcasting live and it's on my radio", which makes me think of trials that are broadcast live, giving the shooter more fame which is evidently something he desperately craves to begin with. Then the "and it's on my radio" part could refer to the shooter having a radio in prison and hearing the trial being reported about on said radio and therefore knowing he has reached notoriety. Just my thoughts anyway1 point

The write up isn't exactly flattering and they spelled his name wrong, but it is nice to see Billie's guitar skills recognized, sort of. 10. DAVE GROHL, JACK WHITE, JOHN FRUSCIANTE, JOHNNY MARR, KURT COBAIN, BILLY JOE ARMSTRONG: These guys are creeping onto the radar. Because of their playing? No, because producers are getting younger and the older ones are retiring. And because consumers are from this generation of players. The next nine guys are still in the lead, but these guys are coming on strong. http://www.guitarworld.com/news-gear-galleries-blogs/session-guitar-top-10-guitarists-emulate-successful-studio-career/231711 point

For me the celebrity martyr line is the shooter saying 'I want to be famous for dying for what I believed in', rather than 'I want to die for what I believe in'. It's showing the selfish/insecure/ego-centric motivations of the mass shooter and the insincerity of their declared cause. 'Shoot me up to entertain' seems like it could be a dig at 24-hour news channels who'll often broadcast these events live with millions of people watching and, to an extent, being entertained by the unfolding drama.1 point
