No one will ever convince me the Trilogy wasn't over-produced. Sure there might not have been much done compared to the likes of American Idiot, but for the intended style it's unquestionably overproduced. The point being the production is too noticeable - it serves as a distraction rather than enhancing the songs. Songs in that sound of style shouldn't sound so damn clean and polished, because it just sounds artificial and takes away all impact. Demolicious is proof of that.5 points

And my desk at work. And on my phone. And on my computer. And in my car. And everywhere...4 points

I don't see it trying to be AI 2 if it was it would have had a storyline Billie keeps talking about doing a Exile sounding album for like 4 albums now seems he backs out everytime tho I like that list3 points

I mostly agree, but there's this carefree, spontaneous vibe you get from Demolicious that is completely absent on every single Trilogy song. There are none of those little imperfections that make music sound natural, it's completely sanitized.3 points
-
I would say it is differently produced. Billie's vocals are some of his best ever. There are some absolutely amazing lyrics on the album. There are so many different aspects to this album. YOu have the angry, get up in your face songs, such as Christians Inferno and Horsehoes and Handgrenades. Then you have a true ballad (done well) Last Night on Earth. Then they conquer Christian hypocrisy with East Jesus Nowhere and have a true anthem in 21 Guns. To sum, the album is a roller coaster that takes us through all sorts of musical styles while still maintaining the flow of a concept album. It shows just how diverse they can be.3 points

I liked the WMUWSE cover...and then the chorus happened.2 points

Depends on how Billie uses the filters he can have the filter on while recording or they could use it afterwards The amount they used was the same as they used for AI and 21st which is fine for those album cause you got the loud music masking the filter but when the band decided to use clean tones for whatever the fuck reason they needed to readjust the filters and they didn't The vocals are overproduced in that sense cause of it2 points

Too far in one direction, basically. Demolicious is the other extreme, it's totally raw with minimal post-production of the sound. Something inbetween that and what we got would've been great. You might be right, honestly. Just as long as it's not Butch Vig.2 points
-
I know this isn't going to happen again, since they have done it once before, but maybe they need to try another producer? I know Rob has been with them from the beginning, and has done some great work, but maybe the Trilogy is a sign that he is too familiar with them. Maybe they need a different ear.2 points

Random Green Day related story: Yesterday my brother was playing video games in my room. (Need for Speed Most Wanted on PS3, to be specific.) and I heard a familiar song and I attacked him and told him to stop driving so I could hear the song playing on his car's radio, and guess what!?... Stop When The Red Lights Flash is on the game soundtrack haha.2 points

I haven't entered this thread for ages and I'm still on about the same things but I want to remind the world that I exist and so venture to point out that Warning is their best album ever no doubt.2 points

Yes! His work on Journal For Plague Lovers was brilliant, if the songs were suitable it'd be amazing. How about Mike Hedges? I'd like to see Green Day do something more along the lines of The Forgotten, but less half-assed. An epic string section would be fantastic.1 point

Sorry for jumping on you but the way your first reply to me is worded implied that i was being biased cause of his work with Nirvana and my love for Nirvana. Sorry for jumping down your throat1 point

I've got some Pringles, I'm happy to pass the tube around. Paprika flavour.1 point

I've always liked you, and I've always gotten along with you. I have no idea why you would jump down my throat for a simple statement. I meant no harm, nor meant it the way you took it. If you thought I meant something I did not, then you could have asked. I was honestly only aware of his work with Nirvana. My statement had nothing to do to with you. I'm ending it right here, so go chill.1 point

Ugh, fine 1. 21st Century Breakdown 2. Peacemaker 3. East Jesus Nowhere 4. Before The Lobotomy 5. Last Of The American Girls 6. Murder City 7. Viva La Gloria (Little Girl) 8. Restless Heart Syndrome 9. Last Night On Earth 10. The Static Age 11. American Eulogy 12. See The Light See, I've put it into the order I'd like and everything. I mean I can see why they put 21 Guns on there after the success of BOBD, but it's only any good live. Same goes for Know Your Enemy. I could probably cut it down even further if I were to be brutal, ha. But the title track, Peacemaker and Restless Heart Syndrome are easily top 15 songs for me. RHS is top 3 at the very least.1 point

I WOULD KILL FOR THIS. Anyway, Lights Out is awesome, and the "private suicide" lines work well to tie AI and 21CB together.1 point
-
Okay, but you can't argue that the songs I mentioned before are AS good as songs like American Eulogy and 21st Century Breakdown. Like, if you have 18 songs written for an album, there's no way they're all representative of your best work. You need to cut out the stuff that's not so good. Release it as B-sides, play it live, but an album should be focused. Even the Clash, who I LOVE, who were incredible, put out Sandinista, which is just FULL of filler. It dilutes the impact, and makes the actual good songs on the record seem weaker by comparison.1 point
-
I mean, I think their biggest problem these days seems to be quality control. As I said, 21CB should've been shorter, and the Trilogy was just a fucking monument to an inability to self-edit.1 point
-
Yeah, I agree with that. But there was never really any reason they couldn't have put out something that sounded like Demolicious but more polished production-wise. They straddled the line between raw and polished for years (Dookie and American Idiot, for example, were perfectly balanced but still energetic and "punky") and I'm still at a loss as to what went wrong this time around.1 point
-
The recordings themselves seem fine for the most part. With the exception of the guitar tone, everything wrong with the overall sound could have been done differently at the mixing stage. Louder guitars, less of the vocal filter, punchier bass. It could all have been better.1 point
-
It's been said a fair few times before, but Demolicious is vastly superior to the actual released Trilogy. Now that you say that, Christian's Inferno could've been a good punk song without the chorus.1 point

KYE is a fantastic live song, but it's just dull dull dull on the record.1 point

Lots of free time, huh? I'd say Dookie and Stop Drop and Roll are perfect albums.1 point

I go through musical phases where I only listen to one artist, and then inbetween phases is usually when I shuffle my entire library. This is the fourth or fifth Green Day phase I've had, but I know it'll wear out at some point. Until it does, I'm pretty much listening to them all the time.1 point

All the way through, actually paying attention? A long time. Lately, I've been brushing up on the albums I never got super familiar with (39/Smooth, Kerplunk, Insomniac, Nimrod).1 point
-
Well, I meant, I don't understand how you can rate the songwriting from those albums so highly. I can see AI being at the top. Dookie is half amazing, half just okay for me.1 point
-
I think Jinx/Haushinka officially are my favorite transition songs. Both are solid songs, and the transition is just so punchy. Flawless, really. They're two gems on Nimrod amongst the experimental chaos. I even like them more than Give Me Novacaine/She's a Rebel or Holiday/BOBD now, which are both off my favorite album.1 point

Not sure if it's been brought up but WWE Superstar and frontman of Fozzy, Chris Jericho talked on his podcast about meeting Billie Joe at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and actually posted a photo with him on his Instagram. I've been playing my Dad some of my green day vinyls. I played him nimrod a couple days ago. Then yesterday we were talking and he called himself a nimrod and then said how appropriate that he should say that. Also I was with my aunt yesterday and I was asking about my cousin and she said she was a basket case. Not very significant but it makes me smile.1 point

Johnny Ray is running scared, as he ___ his flowing hair Running from the light of day, making ___ all the way the slightest urge goes from his hands. Follow me if you understand. he's got the trigger of his gun Final sin and now he runs That's what I've got from the recent performance, but "all the way" doesn't match up in the studio version1 point
-
No, it's definitely the worst. Between him sounding like he has shit in his mouth, and the production burying the vocals, it's really difficult to understand, but it definitely contains some of his best lyrics. It's quite a shame.1 point
