02 - Bang Bang

Here comes the Blink vs Green Day circle-jerk again... I sometimes feel like I'm the only one on this board who loves both bands. I really enjoyed California and Blink will always be my number 2 band and Green Day will always be my favorite band. I love music from both groups.

Anyway can someone else listen to Bang Bang and at the end of the news reports says "Deserve to be annihilated" I can't be the only one who hears Billie saying that.

I love both bands! I just don't take the 'one vs the other' thing very seriously. Though admittedly I still haven't heard the new Blink album

"I wanna be a celebrity martyr". I think the shooter is expecting to die and doesn't care, also suggested by "shoot me up to entertain". Most shooters end up killing themselves or being shot dead by the police.

I kind of though that it seemed like the shooter kept hearing about all these other mass shootings through the media whilst preparing for it himself, see the "broadcasting live and playing with my toys" line. It's like he's in his basement hearing about a mass shooting and is sitting polishing his own guns in readiness. It's creepy as fuck. 

The bit about my private holy war I think is about using religion/extremist groups as an excuse or inspiration for carrying out such an attack, but knowing that you are isolated in your beliefs. I think the killer seems quite calculating and clever, not the kind of mentally deranged nut job that the media often portray mass shooters to be.

Argh, the lyrics are so fucking good! There's so much in there!

For me the celebrity martyr line is the shooter saying 'I want to be famous for dying for what I believed in', rather than 'I want to die for what I believe in'.  It's showing the selfish/insecure/ego-centric motivations of the mass shooter and the insincerity of their declared cause.

'Shoot me up to entertain' seems like it could be a dig at 24-hour news channels who'll often broadcast these events live with millions of people watching and, to an extent, being entertained by the unfolding drama.

Also is Bang Bang getting any airplay on mainstream radio, as in not just rock stations? It's still early days, but the AI singles were all over Radio 1 in the UK in 2004/5.

Right now I get the impression the DJ's on 3FM LOVE Bang Bang. I only hear positive reactions after they play the song.

And I must say that the song starts to sounds fucking good on the radio after each single listen. Not a hit but a fucking kick in the balls. I love it.

Gonna have to give it a few more days, if not weeks before you can really properly answer that question

Personally I doubt this will end up on Top 40 stations though

Well said. I don't think it will get as big as the AI singles because, as you said, it's not a hit. It's a different kind of song, still very awesome.

This is Billie's writing at its finest. There are so many meanings/interpretations of the lyrics. I swear every time I listen to this song it gets better. I have like a 4 hour drive today, wonder how many times I can play the track during that time

And the "instant download of Bang Bang" it's still not here. It's strange, I tought that "instant" had the same meaning in the US and in Europe.
Anyway, I didn't listen to the song more than five times. I need to survive other two months waiting for the new album, and I don't want to feel sick of a really amazing song like Bang Bang.

I've still not got it either, and was expecting it to be as instant here as in the US.  I've emailed the store, hopefully they'll come back to me soon.

Love that there's a posh wee English accent amongst the voices at the start  do you think they're samples of real reporters or recorded for the song? I know someone said the last voice sounds like Billie and I think you're right on that one. Very East Jesus Nowhere.
