Guest Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 I found this topic of Reddit and I thought it was very interesting. Green Day is known to be a great live band but not every song is amazing live. What do you think is the worst song played live. Pick songs that have been played live before. Not potential bad live performances. Also, explain why you think that song sucks live. Don't just list songs please.
Sixtrix Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Brain Stew, though I love it when they play Jaded afterwards but I don't think they still do that. I never liked Brain Stew very much and to me it's a boring song to hear live. That and Minority. I don't like it that they stretch Minority with all these random bits in between. It's great when they do that with King for a Day but to me it don't seem to work that well with Minority. And not a big fan of the song either.
Brooklyn Baby Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 King For A Day. The first time, it's zany and fun, all subsequent times it's a drag.
BilIie Joe Armstrong Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 I agree, the worst live song is KFAD. Messing around that takes between 10 and 15 minutes is a waste of time, because two or three other songs could be played instead.
Hermione Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Any song that they just play through without any special traditions attached basically. If there's any fun little thing they do, however big or small (eg all the shenanigans during KFAD, saving a kid during East Jesus Nowhere, Billie's St Jimmy routine, changing the lyrics of When I Come Around, story during Before the Lobotomy, acoustic Good Riddance singalong to end the show) then it instantly elevates it above other songs. So top of the worst list for me would be songs they play straight through, especially if they're played a lot, like She, Basket Case, Welcome to Paradise, Jesus of Suburbia, Minority (I guess making it 10 minutes long and playing harmonica makes it different but it's not that interesting) as well as rarer ones that don't bring anything to the table like Waiting. I don't actually think they play any songs badly but I just wouldn't miss them. Oh and I'll put the version of Hitchin A Ride where they only play the first half (and then just stop and switch to the next song) at the top of the worst list. When it's the whole song it's fabulous but the first half is useless without the second, a total anti-climax.
alienlifeform Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 King-For-A-Daaaaayyyy... just boring as hell after all these years

Agreed, but for people seeing them for the first time, it's a huge selling point for their performance. A lot of friends who don't even like Green Day thought KFAD was a highlight of the show. These rituals make people feel involved. 39 minutes ago, Hermione said: Any song that they just play through without any special traditions attached basically. Some of the songs Green Day plays straight through are played so tight and so emotionally, having a gimmick takes away from that.
Steven Seagull Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 American Idiot, it's just so repetitive and boring, same goes for Know Your Enemy
YoungBlood Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 It always puzzles me how they always sing better live than on any of the albums . KFAD also and too many hey ho hey etc

unextraordinarygirl Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 99 Revolutions. The song is terrible to begin with and hearing it live doesn't make it any better. It's so repetative and boring. Hopefully on this next tour they pick a better song to start the show with.
Harry Potter. KFAD and 99 Revolutions though, they can easily drop. And I think it's not unlikely that they will.
Steven Seagull Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 99 Revolutions is a great intro song. That verse is just so great.
inthehallwaynow Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Nothing from their discography can be worst for me. I guess i'm just simple cause the novelty of seeing one of my favorite bands perform songs I usually listen to on a computer or watch youtube videos of never wears off. Having the band play it in front of me instantly makes me happy I cant have a worst cause id kill to see them do anything anytime.
Guest Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 I hate know your enemy live. Whoever does the backing vocals for that song sounds terrible. It makes it sound completely different.

Yeah, I'd be insanely happy if they played Britney Spears covers for two hours.
Chin for a Day Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 I wouldn't want them to do any really early stuff. They are so beyond, that now, it just wouldn't fit the flow of a show. I like 99 revolutions as an opener. It is upbeat and got the crows moving. I also don't mind know your enemy liveceither. Yes, it is repetitive but it is an upbeat son and, gets the crowd moving. It is not great to listen to on a record, but live it works well after a slower song Overall I agree with matt, I could care less what they play, I just want to see them again #kingforadayforever

I think the only reason I actually like the song, is because someone sent a letter to the GDA podcast years ago, explaining how well the lyrics fit the senders life and the situation where they were from.
redline punk Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Kill The DJ They couldn't find a good fit to play live and probably we won't listen live very often

Steven Seagull Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 I don't agree, they should play Kill the DJ more live. It's one of the best songs from the trilogy, and it's rare song that's not only power chords for 3 minutes. We want more trilogy songs!
petros Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Know your enemy, holiday and every trilogy song (except maybe from stray heart) sound boring live. King for a day is awesome live they should never stop playing it and the same goes for minority and jesus of suburbia.
Steven Seagull Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 JOS is too long. They could play 3 better songs instead.
