alienlifeform Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Doeas anyone have scans from "In China With Green Day" to share?
IsaGreenDay Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 I don't think we'd be allowed to share scans of it here, even if we did have them. However, I think I should point out that it's not too hard to get hold of a physical copy of that book. Aaron is a great writer, and his work should totally be supported. Not to mention that Cometbus #54 blows every other Green Day-related book out of the water. (I don't mean to be rude or anything!)
alienlifeform Posted January 26, 2016 Author Posted January 26, 2016 I'd like to buy it, the problem is that brazilian money worths nothing over dollar nowadays, so it'll be a little expensive to import a copy from Brazil just now. If I had a chance to buy an original copy of it I would for sure
Hero_Of_The_Hour Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 You won't find scans here for two reasons. Firstly the book is copyrighted so that would be breaking major laws but mainly because it would be hugely unfair to a DIY independent publisher (Aaron Cometbus) who relies on the sale of his zines to make a living. He only charges minimal prices so as to make his zine affordable to as many people as possible and at $4 (more expensive than his regular $3!) for the greatest zine/book on the market about Green Day it really is a steal. I know shipping can be expensive outside the US but even combined it costs less than some retail prices of crap Green Day books. Unfortunately it's simply unfair to Aaron to distribute his work online for free. There are a load of different sites selling Cometbus 54 though so you should maybe have a look and hopefully find shipping that won't be so bad and maybe save up a bit until you can get it. Hope I didn't sound like an ass. http://microcosmpublishing.com/catalog/zines/3501/ http://www.portlandbuttonworks.com/cometbus-54-in-china-with-green-day http://store.silversprocket.net/products/cometbus54 http://store.noidearecords.com/products/cometbus-54inchinawithgreenday-zine I'd go with No Idea Records as it's only $3.50 and they have a great shipping rate and selection of Cometbus as he was signed to their label with one of his bands but there are loads of options including non-independent options like amazon or second hand like ebay. Good luck!
alienlifeform Posted January 27, 2016 Author Posted January 27, 2016 As I said, if and whn I can afford it I will buy. I am a collector and I am always looking for new material, I am a supportive person and yes, 4$ is pretty cheap. I was only looking for and pdf or scanned copy to do a quick read on it. Anyways, Ill try to save some money to buy it on No Idea Records. It'll be 'only' 22$ to ship it here
Hermione Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 I don't blame you for asking considering how much it is with the currency/shipping issue but yeah, we can't have copyrighted material posted here. I think it's unlikely you'll find it online since I think most people who buy Aaron's zines respect that he doesn't charge much and relies on people buying it to live, I've only ever seen very minimal amounts of his writing posted online. Hope you can find a way to get it for a decent price, it's definitely worth reading.
stuart_and_the_ave Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 You can get it here for £3.50 plus £7.00 shipping http://everythingsucksmusic.bigcartel.com/product/cometbus-back-issues
Steven Seagull Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 There are people on the internet who actually care about copyrights? #DownloadEverything

Exactly, he has been self publishing this zine for longer than I (and probably most of us here) have been alive and is a legend in the punk scene. He could easily charge obscene prices for the zine especially for an issue exclusively about Green Day but he has ethics. As it turns out so do his readers who respect him. Here's just one example of an issue of Cometbus that was sold on eBay a few weeks ago...it demonstrates that he could very easily charge a significant amount for his zines so paying $4 is hardly anything to complain about.
AlissaGoesRAWR Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Every time someone says "zine" I die a little inside. First, because it looks like it's pronounced with a long I, and second, because is it really that hard to just type/say four more letters and say "magazine?"

Are you implying it's not pronounced with a long I? I think "zine" is a term specifically related to subcultures so I go with it when I talk about cometbus and such.

Like, when I read "zine," in my mind, it should be pronounced "z-eye-n," even though I know everyone still pronounces it "zeen," the shortened form of "magazine" (pronounced "maga-zeen"). I know it's a subculture thing, but stupid abbreviations are a pet peeve of mine. Which means I probably should direct this complaint to another thread, eh?
Hero_Of_The_Hour Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Definition of “zine” - English Dictionary "zine" in British English a small magazine that is produced cheaply by one person or a small group of people, and is about a subject they are interested in (Definition of zine from the Cambridge Advanced Learners Dictionary & Thesaurus© Cambridge University Press) http://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/zine Definition of “magazine” - English Dictionary a type of thin book with a paper cover that is published regularly and usually contains articles and photographs : a weekly/monthly magazine http://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/magazine That site also has a little audio function to allow you to hear the correct pronunciation of "zine"

I agree that it's a pretty unnecessary term and it's true that I had to look up the pronounciation because I couldn't figure out how to pronounce it. At first I thought it was pronounced like "Zayn". As far as I'm concerned, the stupid abbreviation no.1 is "mag".
Maddie86 Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 I have a question for the GDA guys... if you can't post something like Cometbus because of copyright issues then how did you get away with posting all those magazine scans on the site? I see where Cometbus is different because it's a small independent thing and you don't wanna take business away from him (and I'm on your side with that), but I have a couple issues of Bass Player Magazine with some cool Mike Dirnt articles that aren't on this site, I was gunna offer to send them to you to put on the site if I can find a way to scan them.
