Christie Road Contemplation

Guys, I'm new here and I'm not exactly sure if I can get responses with any ease at all, but do any of you find the guitar solo in Christie Road to be similar or even an influence to Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit? I couldn't find any definitive answers on the Google, and I listened to the two songs within a small time period and realized that they're quite similar.

no body actually writes anything, anymore didnt you know that? every thing is only borrowed, smells like teen spirit is just louie louie with a bunch of studio bullshit. tons of greenday songs were influenced by other artist and it shows, every month someone says that song sounds like this song, for good reason no one is that original. but if you honest want to see if they are as similar as you think you should compare the guitar tabulatures.

they don't sound anything alike

Does sort of remind me of it now that you say something. But I don't even pay attention anymore, because there's only so many different combinations guitarists can compose with chords.

but why wouldn't Green Day be inspired by SLTS good song

Christie Road doesn't have a solo? I mean, I think I know the part you're talking about, the riff from the second half of the song. It has a similar strum pattern to the main riff of SLTS, but a completely different chord progression. Christie Road is G-F-C whilst SLTS is F-B-G#-C# (can't remember if either of those songs are half a step down off the top of my head but it's pretty irrelevant).

Anyway, the riff from SLTS was intentionally plagiarized from More Than A Feeling by Boston, wasn't it? I'm sure WhiteTim would know better than me.

Christie Road is played half step down, Smells like teen spirit is played in standard

Smells Like Teen Spirit was released in late 1991 (Nevermind being released first on September 21St 1991). Green Day were already playing Christie Road live in 1991 (possibly even in late 1990 but I'm not sure about that...too many old YouTube live gigs have me confused). It's not a case of Nirvana came out with the song in 1991 and Green Day recorded Christie Road in 1992...Green Day had been playing it live around Europe and the US for ages before Nirvana released Teen Spirit. If anyone thinks it sounds similar then I guess it's a pleasant/unpleasant coincidence depending on your opinion of Nirvana.

He is suggesting that Nirvana borrowed it from Green Day.

As people have already said, there are only so many chord progressions out there.  You are going to find things that sound alike in almost every song on the planet.

:ermm: Oh.. This is why I shouldn't post while walking and talking

Well in that case I'd simply say Nirvana had a lot more going on than to need to steal from or be influenced by a bunch of (I think they were still homeless at the time) teenagers who were mostly still playing in people's living rooms.

Yeah since Green Day were already playing Christie Road before Smells Like Teen Spirit was out, and since the only chance Nirvana would've had to hear Christie Road prior to writing Smells Like Teen Spirit would've been at a few tiny gigs by an at the time unknown band it seems highly unlikely that either band was aware of the others' song at the time of writing. It's just a coincidence.

Yep SLTS is pretty much More Than A Feeling mixed with some Pixies

I see the first public appearance I can tell for Christie Road is 4/26/91 which is funny as first public appearance of SLTS is 4/17/91 so a week apart of course the 4/26 is first recording Todd would know more if that's also first time performed

either way SLTS didn't get influenced by Christie Road nor did Christie Road influenced SLTS

What if Billie is reincarnated version of Kurt and will eventually blow his head off too? That would explain why he copied the song.

It adds alot to music, if you are interested in that aspect of it.  Music is fascinating.  It is so complicated.  There are so many different ways to accomplish the same thing.  I find it fascinating to look at chord progressions and see how different artists use the same thing.  Plus, it is so interesting to see what artists influence others and in what way.  It can give you an insight into what the artist was trying to accomplish.  It is like taking a puzzle and finding different ways to solve it.

I saw this thread and immediately looked up the tabs for both songs and then listened to see what similarities there are.

Again, you don't have to like this kind of thing, but there is no point in stating it, just look away.

In fairness, this is a really fucking stupid thread. Two songs written at the same time whose only similarity is a vaguely similar strum pattern? That's a serious leap, even for me.

Not really.  It turned out to be nothing, but these type of questions can be interesting.  This particular one is not.  But in general, comparing songs can be interesting.
