Green Day's best album (or second best) came out 11 years ago today

what was your experience with this album were you already a GD fan or new to the band?

I remember when I was like five or six, my sister started getting into AC/DC. Well, my parents found out about all the hell and satin references in their music, and didn't want her listening to it. Took it away, and of course, she rebelled, and kept buying the CD's, and they kept making them disappear. :P

When I got into Green Day when I was ten, I didn't want to risk them finding out and taking it away. So when we'd go to Walmart, I'd smuggle my own CD's home, and enjoy them on my own.

I was twelve when I bought AI, it was late September. I bought the album at Walmart, and read the lyrics all the way home. The first song I listened to was Boulevard, because really, besides American Idiot, it was the only song I'd heard prior. I listened to the whole thing, and was just so amazed by the depth, and the story. That CD was on repeat for weeks. I was in my pre- life changing stage, pre-depression stage, and just trying to get through it all smoothly. I think Green Day in general made that otherwise rough transition smoother.

I kinda used GD as my love-hate thing towards my sister. I was pissed at her for everything, I was just pissed at the world, like every other teen on the planet. I really started to dive into music after hearing AI. Buying Uno and Dookie shortly after. Warning, however, was the first CD I owned, and that one was on repeat forever, too.

I just really really love this album. My favorite song from it is Whatsername. Even more so, now. It reminds me of my sister. She took off with her boyfriend and we didn't see or hear from her for over six months, so the line. "Did she ever marry old what's-his-face?" matched up pretty well.

I was already a fan for 10 years. I think I remember crying alot and listening to the album on constant replay for what seemed like forever.

It was shitty back then and it's still shitty after 11 years :P

This American Idiot sucks, they're not even in the Top 10.

Wow, I was 3 when it was released... AI (the song) got me into Green Day last year and the album is still awesome. AI or Give me Novacaine might be my favourite songs from it, at least at the moment.

Wow, hard to believe 11 years already, a great album for sure!  I still listen to this at least once a week,  Happy Birthday!

I'm just gonna drop in and say that Letterbomb is the best song on AI.

Goodbye :)

This was the first album I downloaded on Morpheus

The first record I ever bought, and my inspiration for being a musician. I always get well nostalgic listening to it, especially Homecoming and Whatsername :')

I was pretty young when the album came out, but I rediscovered it in about middle school and that's when I became a Green Day fan. This album completely changed the way I looked at music

I remember the first time I listened to it I was totally blown away! Hard to believe it's been 11 years already.

While I've certainly found much better albums (Not talking about Green Day) and better music overall, I gotta thank this album for really "getting me into" rock music.

Solid album. Probably in my top 10 albums of the 2000s (Or top 20).

I have to say, that for the past 6 years or so, my interest in Green Day has drastically declined. 21cb was a piss poor carbon copy, and the trilogy was lol galore. Personally, my musical taste all around has drastically changed, and I'll hardly bore anybody with details that might obviously upset people around here that are obviously still big fans. But frankly, had Green Day released this album now, I wouldn't think twice to discard it. Just ain't my thing anymore, for various reasons.

My point is though, everytime I listen to it, it's like a time machine back to 2004, which was a really great time in my life. Probably the best time I'll ever experience. I go back to my 14 year old self and remember why this album meant so much to me and how intensely I connected with it, being one of the first albums I ever got really into from front to back. No other album has ever really had that kind of affect on me. Usually when I grow to dislike the artist and the material that comes with it, that's just that. But not in this case. So for that, I'll always love this album (in a certain, weird little nostalgic way at least). Cheers, and I can't wait to finally see hlahg!
