Why not? He actually does very much look his age (45 not 50). He is aging beautifully and it is amazing that he can still run around stage like a 20 year at the ripe old age of 45. I would have no problem with him going au natural with his hair color. There is absolutely nothing wrong with looking your age.

The hardcore fans will love them no matter how they look or dress but the casual fans (OMG BILLIE JOE IS SOOO HOT!!!) may not keep an interest or buy tickets to shows. Not saying that stuff matters to them personally but when you're trying to sell out arena's every night it matters to the record company.

They DON'T look like 20 year olds, they look like men in their 40's. They are not appealing to the really young anymore and they are not expected too. The casual fans are not the ones going (OMG BILLIE JOE IS SO HOT) it is the hardcore fans that are. Casual fans that are 20 something don't think he is hot. They are not trying to appeal to younger crowds and nor should they. And dying their hair is not going to make them any more appealing to someone that isn't already a fan. I dunno, I don't think you have to be a hardcore fan or have reached any particular age to see Billie looks hot. His age might show by now but he's still very attractive and cool looking (not to mention extremely charismatic on stage). He's hardly the average 45 year old looks wise. And although they're not literally youthful nor trying to be they are "youthful" in the sense of being full of energy and attitude and in their fashion style, 40's isn't that old in the first place and they're definitely "young" 40's rather than "old" 40's. Their image is still a big part of their appeal I think, and really isn't much different than it was 10-15 years ago. If anything they're one of the few bands their age that do still attract young fans, maybe not quite in the numbers of American Idiot times but there's still massive numbers of teenagers at their shows. I don't think him dyeing his hair has much to do with grey though, more that he just likes it to look cool (black or blond etc instead of the boring natural colour). Don't think it's been the natural colour since he was a teenager

I took offense to the thought that they dye their hair because they don't want to look old and the concept that they can only fill arenas if they look young. I don't think pretending you are something you are not works for anyone. They dye their hair because they like too, as do I. I seriously doubt, that they dye their hair because the record company feels that looking young is the only way they are going to sell.

Well I mean, they do let the grey show more when they're off tour . It depends on how you define youthful image I think. I do think they want to project a youthful image on stage, just not so much in the sense of actually trying to look like they're in their 20's or hide their age, more in the sense of looking cool/their best and being "youthful" like I said in terms of energy and attitude. Having that image (as opposed to say turning up with natural hair, day clothes and glasses on) isn't the only way they're going to sell but it is still part of it. While I agree that Billie showing up looking like he did in Ordinary World is not optimum and could possibly be a turn off, a few grey hairs is not going to make anyone not buy a ticket. It is one thing to say you want to show a youthful image, its another thing to say that they don't want to show up on stage looking like a 50 year old. As you have said, you can be a youthful 45 year old, which they are. IF Billie decided not to dye his hair, I really don't think it would affect ticket sales. The whole conversation didn't start with them being in day clothes with glasses on, but just not dying his hair.
BilIie Joe Armstrong
Both of you have a good point, in my opinion. Billie has been dyeing his hair at least since 1994 so it's not that he had to start now when he's "old". However, obviously - the image they have is meant to be appealing. Of course it is. I mean, GDCers are mostly hardcore fans and only a small minority of us is willing to look at Hobo Billie Joe. So yeah, they can't let themselves go completely, especially because the image is the part of the trademark. People have to recognize them. I showed Still Breathing vid to my best friend who is a casual fan and she asked "is this the same guy withought the eyeliner or someone else?" - it's not that ticket sales would be affected but keeping a recognizable, signature look is important. jengd
Funny how we all look at things differently. I've always thought that Billie in particular, and to an extent Mike and Tre, try to live such normal lives when at home that they deliberately go low key. Billie walking about Oakland, doing normal stuff, is much easier if he is dressed down with more natural hair and clothes, than if he appeared with the straightened, jet black hair, black outfit etc, always thought that's why he wares hats so much too although he does seem to love a hat. I think they really "don" their rockstar image for touring, to appearances etc. Look at how many people post stories of meeting Billie when nobody else recognised him until they heard someone else had spotted him. I agree that keeping a recognizable image is important. However, as someone ages that image has to adapt. There isn't much worse than a 50 year old trying to look like a 20 year old. Maintaining that recognizable image does not mean dressing and acting exactly the same. You are correct, Billie has been dying his hair forever so it isn't as if he is doing it to try to look young. This really turned into much more than I expected. But my main point was that he doesn't have to dye his hair to look youthful and if he went grey I doubt it would affect ticket sales. Plus isn't everyone up on fashion trends??? Celebrities are actually dying their hair grey on purpose

(hey, does anyone have a picture with his natural red hair? I don't think i've ever seen what it looks like undyed - all the pics of him from way back are all black and white.) It isn't red, it had a slight red tinge when he was little but as he got older it became just brown: I guess someone saw a picture of him when he was really little and assumed it was red from there and that's how it ended up as a "fact" on did you know lists. Which interview was it where he got asked his natural hair colour and he said "boring brown"? That was accurate.

St. Jonny
Anyone remember when Weird Al would take over Much Music and make it Al Music back in 1996? Those were the days and he had a Billie Joe hair color wheel he'd pull out. Man, that was hilarious!
