Too Much Too Soon - From the Lost Album?

I don't know if there's a Green Day fan out there not intrigued by Cigarettes and Valentines - the album that is (though the song still kicks ass). Although we may never see it, a few songs are out there, and most would go by Wikipedia. Obviously, there's the title track, that one goes without saying. Next, there's "Walk Away". Note that this one isn't 100% confirmed; Billie confirmed a few years back that a song of the same was on the album, so we're pretty sure that they're the same (this fact has been taken off of Wikipedia). And next there's "Olivia", and I doubt this one. The citation on Wikipedia just lists to a page that mentions this is an "unreleased cut." No mention of where it's from - seems like conjecture to me.

But my biggest question is when did "Too Much, Too Soon" get thrown into this? There's no source of that one, and honestly, it sounds more like an American Idiot track than the other outtakes. Think about it; a narrative about an unnamed boy and girl that uncannily reflects the American Idiot story. Even if it does turn out to be from Cigarettes and Valentines, it's very interesting how it contains a prototype for what became American Idiot.

Since it's been said that Mike and Tre's jams (which evolved into Homecoming) were the true origin of American Idiot, I think "Too Much, Too Soon" is more accurately from the American Idiot sessions. Any thoughts on this? Am I completely wrong?

It was Mike in the interview he did with djrossstar that confirmed a title of Walk Away not by Billie

i don't get the question?

too much too soon is on AI single, so yes it was made for AI and the lyrics follow the story

Just cause it was a b side on the AI single doesn't make it a AI song

Case in point Hearts Collide and Lights Out were b sides on a single for 21st Century Breakdown but was not recorded for that album (supposedly)

yes i see your point but in my opinion (edit) i find that too much too soon kinda go with AI story but maybe it's not

A ton of GD lyrics can fit into AI, so I don't think there was ever definitive proof that Too Much Too Soon was written for AI, I think it's one of the songs they were gonna have as a single if C&V ever got released, so they had it as a b side. All in all, Billie writes a shit ton of songs about really similar topics, so some songs can fit right into AI or 21stCBD, the more thematic albums.

I'm still not convinced Cigarettes and Valentines ever existed in the first place.

Where else would they get Cigarettes and Valentines?

The same place they get the rest of their songs?

They said when they played it "it's not that new", and it makes perfect sense that an older song they haven't released was on an album of the same name that wasn't released - there's really no reason not to believe in its existence.

Yeah, you don't have to tell me, I was at that show. It also makes perfect sense that it's just a song that they wrote at some point in the past. Maybe there was an album planned, but the whole "master tapes being stolen" story has always sounded like bullshit.

 shows what kind of fan I am, I always thought it was a cover.

I couldn't care less about Cigarettes and Valentines. Pretty sure it was all a lie.

While my first post was a little long-winded, the real question is "where did it explicitly state that Too Much Too Soon was from Cigarettes and Valentines?" There's never seem to have been any sources to corroborate that claim. The fact that was a non-album b-side doesn't automatically mean it was from the last scrapped album.

IMO, the song pretty much picks up where Letterbomb leaves off. "She packs her bags and says goodbye, a bon voyage." To me, it sings like an aftermath to the event of Whatsername leaving, from her and Jimmy's perspective.

Billie said it was from Cigarettes & Valentines in a radio interview around the AI musical time, so yes it was from the sessions.

See, now that's actually helpful. Anyone else got any of the specifics on that? I know the rumor goes back way before then, but maybe there are some interviews around the time period that I'm overlooking.

I have to find the article. But I remember picking up a magazine talking about the American Idiot musical. And it said in the musical they included a song from Cigarettes and Valentines titled "Too Much Too Soon".

I'm not exactly sure how it was worded but it was in there.

Here's a tip, if the subject of a thread doesn't interest you don't bother to click on it. Someone wondering about the origin of a Green Day song in the Green Day section of a Green Day forum isn't that remarkable.

As others have said, Billie said Too Much Too Soon was from C&V. I can't remember where it was exactly but I remember it being discussed on here at the time quite clearly, it was surprising to hear since the band had never mentioned it before and no one had suspected it was from there. So yeah the only reason it's now thrown in there is because Billie said it, before that there was no reason to think it was. I guess it isn't really that surprising, sure they decided to scrap C&V and push themselves harder to make a more ambitious album, but it was still the material they were working on right before American Idiot so there's bound to be some similarities/songs that could fit with both albums. I think even the song Cigarettes and Valentines could've fit as an AI b-side, it's not that dissimilar to Too Much Too Soon and the others.

What about "Dreamcatcher"?

Where was that from?
