I love these interviews and I've been eagerly waiting for the day when someone decides to pick on Green Day. It's kind of like a status symbol. Anyway, the guy made some valid points in a hilarious, intelligent way and I've got to hand it to him for that!

This thread:

>People will post that they had to Google who he was, and the get loads of likes.

>People will post that they don't know/care who he is.

>People will call him a cunt/arsehole

>People will post that you shouldn't judge him just for disliking Green Day.

And the circle of GDC life will continue

Wait, what? What interview did you read? I honestly didn't see that many intelligent points of view at all. He thought the song was cliche for being anti-bush. There wasn't a whole lot of anti-bush in the music world going on in 2003-2004 when they were writing the album. Bush was still in the 60-70% approval ratings. The Dixie Chicks said something negative about him and all their country fans started protesting them. There wasn't a lot of anti-Bush music or sentiment in the US. In the subsequent 4 years, there were tons. I think Daly forgot Bush's first term.

He also basically said these guys shouldn't sing about politics because they're all rich and it makes them hypocrites. As if making money suddenly means you're a moron that has no ability to think critically about the world around you.

They also spent like 2 paragraphs talking about "I'm the faggot America", both the interviewer and Daly completely oblivious to the fact about what Billie meant by it or his own history.

I giggled a couple times during the piece. But honestly, it was pretty shit filled with someone who hates something because everyone else liked it. I think the song is pretty shitty to Green Day standards, but not for any of the reasons he talked about.

I stick by what I said. Maybe it's because I'm so used to seeing people just go "zomg greengay sux ughhhh" but at least I didn't feel like my brain cells were dying as I read the article.

That interview is such a pile of shit. It's not even like he's saying he dislikes Green Day... he's actually gone through and picked apart the song. Must be pretty obsessive dislike.

That's the point of Hate Song though. Read some of the other ones :P

Hmm, mixed feelings. I like Jon on Kroll Show and like Kay said, getting named-checked in Hate Song is kind of a status symbol. I even think some of the things he says are arguable and not too different than things I've read on here. But by the end I think it becomes clear that he's another member of the "Fuck them for selling out" crowd and that shit is tiring. And I think he missed the point of the "faggot" line.

I got half way through reading and got bored. I'll come back to it later I guess.

Meh. Not as bad as the usual "I hate Green Day" articles, but this guy seems like that particular kind of comedian that's generally just disdainful of most popular stuff. I know nothing about his comedy, but I would guess from this article that it mostly derives from being counterculture (which is a culture in and of itself) about the mainstream.

This AV Club "hate song" series isn't supposed to valid, intelligent points about what someone doesn't like a certain song or artist. It's kind of just a joke. It's like when you are talking to your friends about a band or tv show you hate. You probably don't make intelligent, Shakespearian points, you just talk shit about it and probably try to say something as funny and insulting as possible.

Plus, isn't the sister publication The Onion?

I've been reading this series, and I like it. Happy someone chose Green Day. I think it is funny. I'm not reading in to anything he says.

I've called him out for it on Twitter. And now I'm getting a pile of people on me for it.

SHIT.

Jon Daly is one of the funniest people alive i mean yea it hurts to read that GD stuff and i dont watch kroll show cause i find nicks stand up to be more funny.. but i listen to podcasts like no ones business and i have been for a long time Jon is a semi frequent guest on most of them and he is very smart and very strange but i can say hes not an asshole comedian or whatever cause the article gives off that sorta notion just clarifying haha even so everyone is allowed to have an opinion on him haha

Pearl Jam was attacking Bush Jr long before Green Day (Bu$hleauger and few other songs on Riot Act from 2002)

I like this guy, but I can't believe how he can say all this shit when it's obviously an outsiders point of view. I don't think he quite knows what he is talking about to be honest. Green Day got filthy rich in 94, so why would it be about money? As if they needed more of it.

And of course they were anti bush, who wasn't back then?

" The fact that it’s a musical just because they thought they could make some cash, so they hired some nerd to make it into a story and just shout out this thing." John Mayer was it? Came and told them he wanted to make it a musical. They were fine with it not being one to start with.

" And pretty soon, you, Tré Cool, me, Billie Joe, and the other dude are gonna be fucking surfing the frosting all the way to money town.” Aw he forgot who Mike was...

AVC: It’s offensive that he’s comparing his plight to that of a gay person. He’s saying, because he wears eyeliner and he’s in a quote-unquote “punk band” that he’s the counterculture No....he wasnt comparing his plight to a gay persons in any way...they no nothing about this album at all to bash it

I just don't understand his argument that Green Day only made American Idiot so that they could make money. Doesn't this guy do the same thing, just with comedy? He goes on TV, he makes jokes to get people to watch his shows and listen to his podcasts so that he can make money. Yet, when Green Day writes a song, it is a bad thing that they made money from it. Doesn't make sense, man.

Exactly. The sellout argument is so flawed from the off that it's become a parody of itself.
