WhiteTim Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Dookie, Nimrod, Warning ? Dookie would hardly be top 5 1 Quote
The Disappearing Boy Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Dookie, Nimrod, Warning ?Up there, definitely.Surely there's people who like each one of their albums best due to people having different tastes and criteria for an album being good? I'm sure that fact used to be more accepted on this site Nope, doesn't have to be.Everyone has their opinions - definitely! But I think technically speaking, and objectively speaking, American Idiot and probably Breakdown are their best works. I like parts of the Trilogy, but I can't see it getting anywhere near those two. 1 Quote

They're objectively their most ambitious and complex but there's so many other factors that can come into judging what makes an album the best overall that it can never really be objective imo. Quote

And I generally don't, to be honest. I mean, I also love Dookie and Nimrod, but they aren't objectively on a level with American Idiot or Breakdown. To be honest, I was more objecting to the fact the The Trilogy was chosen as the best, not the fact that it wasn't AI 1 Quote
Todd Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Yeah, 21st century breakdown is one of their most diverse works, not best. Nowhere close Quote
Jollyroger118 Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 DOS is the only one from the trilogy I regularly listen through front to back. My least favorite on it is Makeout Party but it intrigues me cause it seems to be one of Billie's favorites from the trilogy but even then I don't really hate it like I hate Troublemaker or The Forgotten. Quote
Clockwise Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 I'd agree, except for the fact that 21st Century Breakdown exists. And American Idiot, Warning, Nimrod, Insomniac, Dookie, Kerplunk, and 39/Smooth. But yeah, aside from those, the trilogy is definitely GD at their best. Interesting opinion of yours, I disagree with it. I love all of those albums, the trilogy is just the most enjoyable for me. 1 Quote

Certified Nimrod Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 The melody is really jarring and I don't like the lyrics. I don't think there's anything jarring about it, but I also don't have a music degree. That's like a bad version of Loss of Control. I'd agree, except for the fact that 21st Century Breakdown exists. And American Idiot, Warning, Nimrod, Insomniac, Dookie, Kerplunk, and 39/Smooth. But yeah, aside from those, the trilogy is definitely GD at their best. Kay is a WRECKING BALL. Quote
Spike Posted August 3, 2014 Author Posted August 3, 2014 I don't think there's anything jarring about it, but I also don't have a music degree. Nah it's nothing to do with having a music degree, it's just how it sounds to me Quote

Spike Posted August 3, 2014 Author Posted August 3, 2014 I don't know what would be considered "jarring," though. There isn't even anything specific, it just sounds weird to me. Quote

Spike Posted August 4, 2014 Author Posted August 4, 2014 Just pointing out this isn't the "discuss Steven Seagull" thread , you can disagree with his unpopular Green Day opinions or post evidence that they're suspect if you want but we don't need a general discussion about any particular GDCer (or a discussion that seems to be drifting away from unpopular Green Day opinions in any case) here. Sorry My only real reason for sharing those posts was that this thread (as well as the old one) gets derailed semi-regularly with a silly argument about AI, usually fronted by Seagull, so I considered it a public service to advise on how to extinguish that whenever it happens. 1 Quote

Popular Post AlissaGoesRAWR Posted August 4, 2014 Popular Post Posted August 4, 2014 I still don't get the love for Lazy Bones. 5 Quote
The Disappearing Boy Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Yes I doSame here. The album version is pretty awful, but the demolicious version is so much better, it's hard to believe it's basically the same song. 1 Quote
Anaïs. Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Tre is obviously more cohesive an album than Shenanigans, which isn't even an album. That said, Espionage and Ha Ha You're Dead blow every song off the former save Brutal Love out of the water. 1 Quote
Sauli Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Ha Ha You're Dead must be one of the catchiest songs they ever did. 1 Quote
Certified Nimrod Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 That said, Espionage and Ha Ha You're Dead blow every song off the former save Brutal Love out of the water. Espionage is probably one of my top 10 Green Day songs. It's so cool and different. Every time I play it, I like to pretend I'm in a Quentin Tarantino film People actually listen to Espionage? I think I've listened to the whole thing once. Quote
Z J Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 I think the problem with Loss of Control is that it's just bad. Jarring or not, it's just terrible. It just feels like they're trying way too hard to summon an Insomniac level of anger. Quote
Anaïs. Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Definitely worth a re-visit. It's good, energizing music And should've been on Nimrod. instead of Last Ride In. 2 Quote
ifmemoryserves Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 shenanigans is way better than the trilogy. i'd rather have a 14-song incohesive "album" than three with 37 songs that suck. 2 Quote
