Blasphemy & Genocide: Unpopular Green Day Opinions, Part 2

Well some versions are better than others, and admittedly I do quite like the odd one. But take Letterbomb for example. It's just the same as the original except with inferior singers with no edge. Therefore it sounds karaoke. If the song had been arranged differently and made a ballad or something it could have been fantastic. But it's not, so it sounds karaoke and I don't know why people would choose to listen to it over the original.

you're trying to tell me that rebecca naomi jones is a inferior singer to billie joe ok. like hermione said, it's musical singing. sometimes it may not exactly fit the "punk" "edge" of american idiot, but live it absolutely works. and letterbomb is amazing.

Inferior when it comes to that style, yes. She could be the absolute best in the world at what she does, but is she a better singer of punk songs than Billie? Lol no.

I think Restless Heart Syndrome is by far the worst song on 21stCB.

Though I have to admit the ending is pretty epic.

Worst? Nah, one of the best songs they've ever done, for me.

The way I see it the musical versions of the songs do sound like they're supposed to sound - like musical songs. I just happen to hate the way musical songs sound (so horribly melodramatic and cheesy that I cringe every moment I'm listening to them), so I don't like them. Doesn't mean they shouldn't exist or that they're "wrong" in any way or that the performers aren't talented, it's just a style that isn't to my taste.

I agree with you on how it sounds, but that's just how musical singing is as far as I can see. I think they hit the mark as far as making musical versions of the songs, it's just a case of whether you like that kind of song or not.

Hell no, as a Sweeney Todd fanatic I can tell you that musicals can and often do sound far edgier/harsher than AI. :P The AI musical is the equivalent of the annoying kid who listens to Avril Lavigne and Nickelback and thinks he's edgy. :P

Well yeah there's exceptions, but I have heard similar singing to the AI musical in other musicals. I think it does "fit" as far as musical style singing goes, there might be better but it doesn't seem unusual or inappropriate for a musical to me (although admittedly I'm no expert!).

I don't think that the clean-ness of the singers' voices is a problem so much as the fact that everyone just sounds so fucking whiny, y'know? It's like they were directed to channel their inner twelve-year-old who's had his Xbox taken away.

Yes, I think that's exactly what they were told to do. There's a particular style that they all sing in, and it's obvious that it's a style that Green Day/the director wanted.

Which is yet another example of why Green Day should not be in a position of power when it comes to making decisions. :P

That may be who's to blame, but that's kind of irrelevant when the result is the same.

i wouldn't complain about whether the musical version of AI sounds too much typically musical like, or not cause it would sound certainly more boring if it'd sound exactly like the original record :)

but otherwise those musical recordings also aren't my favorite ones

While we're on the subject, I'd like to reiterate that if the AI movie ever starts to actually happen I will take Tom Hanks and Billie Joe hostage and force them to cease production.

Yeah an AI movie would be too much. The musical is goddam perfection though.

......I would watch the shit out of that. Maybe he can produce *and* act.

Honestly, if the cast was Tom Hanks, Christian Bale and Eva Green I'd pay for the production myself.

I liked the musical, but it was a bit cringey when it first began. After the first song or so, I got really into it and it became a different world, really. My one complaint is that the singers sing like they are trying to be edgy and punk, but it just sounds whiny. I liked Billie's nephew the second time I saw it. He sounded like Billie and didn't really need to add any whine to his voice.

Last Night on Earth is hands down the best vocal they've ever done. The runs/falsettos are perfect plus Billie proved he could do it live. The lyrics aren't bad as love songs go. Especially when compared to When It's Time.

Also, Tony Vincent's tone in the beginning of LNOE is fucking fantastic, they did well with that song in the musical. Even though I will agree that the "punk spirit" certainly seemed forced from a lot of the characters.

Also, an AI movie is almost doomed to be awful, but I do believe it is POSSIBLE to have it work if they step away from the faux-punk attitude that exists in the musical and in the JOS music video. They would to need to make it really dark and cast it perfectly for it to work for me.

Edit: basically what DookieLukie said above with regard to most singers.

If they anounced that David Fincher or Mark Romaneck was directing I'd probably fangirl all over the place.

I have to agree with this. Technically speaking it just has to be Billie's best song, I don't see how anyone can question that. Personally I rank Jesus Of Suburbia higher in terms of delivery and I prefer listening to that as a result, but when it comes to pure singing ability LNOE is untouchable.

And JOS is a hard song to deliver, so that speaks to his ability. When he did it live on 21cb tour he hit some spectacular notes.

I know it's been said before but his vocals on that tour were utter perfection. He actually sung most of the high notes that he usually bottles and just shouts.

they are broadway actors. what exactly do you expect?

stage acting is a lot different from screen acting. everything is over the top and exaggerated and loud and dramatic. so yeah ""punk spirit"" is going to look ""forced"" just like everything else.

The songs in the musical aren't punk songs though. They're AI songs (debateably, "punk songs") rearranged as musical songs.
