Spike Posted April 3, 2014 Author Posted April 3, 2014 I love that GIF "It's not that Tré wasn't a good drummer, but in terms of his performances we wanted the best of the best. In line with the Who directive, we wanted to let him sound exciting, but back in the early‑'90s you couldn't get a record played on the radio if it wasn't in time, even a rock & roll record. So, although we wanted him to do all of his wild fills and crazy drumming, we couldn't just let him go. He'd drift in and out of time, which is terrific live, but which was unacceptable on radio at that time. We were still under the tyranny of the click track. We'd therefore let him play, but we would take a fantastic tom fill that he did and insert that into one of his better bed tracks. "Often, we might do three or four takes of a particular song, and then I would use one of them for the first verse, a different take for the middle eight and maybe switch to another one for the outro. It could be quite a combination of different drum performances. We may have punched in on the drum track a couple of times. Back then, you couldn't really punch out so easily on drum takes unless there was a big gap. You could hear it — there would be a little blip. So splicing was the way to go... as long as you had somebody who could edit tape.” Straight from the horse's mouth. 1 Quote
PleasedToMeetMe Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 I actually like Stop When The Red Lights Flash. It's one of a handful of songs on Dos that actually lives up to what the album was made out to be. 2 Quote
Anaïs. Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 I love that GIF Straight from the horse's mouth. That makes me even sadder. I'm just picturing Tre going full Keith Moon on us and that could have been something special. 1 Quote

As far as I know American Idiot wasn't butchered to that extent, and I think Jesus Of Suburbia and Give Me Novocaine are far better drum performances than anything on Dookie. So there's that. But now... boom boom clack boom boom boom clack *repeat ad infinitum* 1 Quote
The Disappearing Boy Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 I'm up to liking eight songs from Uno now. Does this mean I like Uno? You used to be cool, man. Quote

Spoopy Doo Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 I'm up to liking eight songs from Uno now. Does this mean I like Uno? Not exactly. (IMO, anyway) you can like several/most songs on an album without liking the album as a whole, if that's what you mean. Quote

Individual songs are good but as an album it's still kind of boring because so many songs are so similar. 1 Quote

Certified Nimrod Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Took place halfway through the year? It was August... It's hardly One For The Razorbacks, though. Ergo meh. You really can't expect an improvised live solo to live up to Billie's best solo ever. Quote
Spike Posted April 3, 2014 Author Posted April 3, 2014 You really can't expect an improvised live solo to live up to Billie's best solo ever. Who's to say the Razorbacks solo wasn't improvised? Quote

The Disappearing Boy Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 While we're talking about improvised Green Day solos, the one in the AAF version of American Idiot is pretty cool. 1 Quote

Repetitive/annoying/eh? lyrics aside, I like the song (if only for the music) and agree that it's one of the more decent songs in Dos. Not the best, yes, but the melody is quite catchy. Mar Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Yeah, true. Individual songs are good but as an album it's still kind of boring because so many songs are so similar. This is how I feel about Dos ... I can't listen to it in full because it just sounds like a bunch of noise. I truly can only take it one song at a time (and only about nine of said songs ) Quote

Spike Posted April 4, 2014 Author Posted April 4, 2014 The live solos of Know Your Enemy are some of the best Billie has ever done. The version on AAF is fucking sweet, and enhanced by the fact he was stood right next to me when he did it Quote
