The best thing about Green Day

What do you think is the best thing about Green Day? Obviously it takes a lot of different components to make up a band, from the obvious such as songwriting, to more abstract like state presence and so on.

So, thoughts? It can be anything from certain bits of lyric to entire albums, or non-music based things, whatever. What sets them apart from everyone else, for you?

Personally, my favourite thing about them is the backing vocals. That might come as a surprise, but I think they're up there with Queen and Fleetwood Mac when it comes to backing vocals, and it really makes them stand out in their field. The combination of Mike, the Jasons and Jeff's voices live is really special, and adds so much to the songs.

In a close second, Mike's bass work. Particularly on Insomniac, at times it takes centre stage given how simple the guitar parts are. It's rare in a pop-punk band, or any band from general punk lineage, for the bass to be so important - beyond The Clash and The Jam, I can't think of many others. I do honestly think Billie was right when he said Mike is the best bassist in punk.

Billie's ear for melody is very special, as well. I think it's great how they use such classic songwriting methods and apply punk stylings to it. I really get the impression most of their songs would work amazingly as pop songs, for that reason. I mean, look what Alanis did with Basket Case.

Just the synergy between the band members and their abilities I guess. The combination of Billie Joe's knack for writing a good hook and memorable riff and Mike and Tre's technical skills make for a wonderful sound.

That's relating to specific events. This can be specific events too, but primarily ongoing things, such as the general vibe the band members seem to have, or whatever.

I love how close all the band members are, and how supportive they are of each other.

How amazing they are live.

Also how easy it is to connect with and relate to Billie's lyrics. Sometimes I feel like he wrote songs about me.... (I wish)

They are passionate musicians, they are huge music fans and do whatever it takes to save rock and roll music. They might not be the most talented musicians on earth but they are living their dream and are great at what they do.

Regarding their songs, they are able to mix the elements of pop music ( good pop music such as The Beatles) with Punk music.

Their ability and ambition to play songs on different styles, although sometimes they did it with "other" bands. Also, how energic and enthusiastic are their shows, like a blast or burst of pure energy!!

They are both really easy to listen to and also reward intense scrutiny. That's tough, especially when the word punk is thrown around.

For being Awesome As Fuck. But really, being able to do so many albums that are so different in style, and doing it well. There is a difference between every album in the way they sound, but they are all amazing in their own way, as opposed to just doing dookie, dookie 2, dookie 3, and so on, until they faded away. They threw something new and awesome at us each time, even if not everybody accepted it.
