Some "country artist" ripped off Green Day and nobody cares

As soon as I heard this dumbass song "Hey Girl" by Billy Currington on the radio I was immediately enraged. At first I thought it was a cover song... same guitar riff, same chords (for both the verses and the chorus).

Is there a way to bring this to Green Day's attention? Billy Currington clearly stole the entire basis of Boulevard of Broken Dreams and just added his own lyrics and melody. Plagiarm evident.

Oasis would say its a rip off on Wonderwall since BOBD is Wonderwalls lol

BOBD isn't a ripoff of Wonderwall. They use the same chord progression for the verses being 1 semitone apart but the other parts of the song and instrumentation are completely different. This country song is 10x more similar to BOBD than BOBD is to Wonderwall.

I wasn't being serious

There are plenty of things in this world to get enraged about, but the similarity of a chord or two in a sappy country song is not one of them.

Maybe he had permission

Maybe. Green Day/Billie Joe aren't credited anywhere that I can see though.

You can't deny the similarity, but who cares? It's not as if you can own a chord progression.

No plagiarism has taken place here, due to the total absence of the phrase "I wore cologne".

Billie Joe once said in Total Guitar magazine back in like 2000 that he fully expects someone to rip his music off one day. He said he's done it, people before him have done it, and people after him will do it

Where can I read that interview? Do you have scans of it?

It's a totally separate song. yeah it does have the pre "I walk along" uhhhs but that is about it.

yeah a little part is ripped off, but there are songs out there that are "more ripped off", e.g. Applaus, Applaus by Sportfreunde Stiller, the whole guitar line there is ripped off from Wake Me Up When September Ends....annoying somehow, but the song is great anyways...

and about this Hey Girl song...i've never heard it on the radio, so it doesn't really bother me and yeah Billie has said that in an interview that people before him have already ripped off songs and people after him will do it as well. there are lots of songs that are ripped off green day songs, but there are also lots of green day songs that sound like any other song...imo you can't really get angry over anyone that's ripped off your favorite band when your favorite band has done the same before multiple times  it's probably not even on purpose, it just happens ;)

You can legally play any instrumentation you want. You can play a green day song note for note. It's not copyrighted. The only thing copyrighted are the words and melody, which I believe you can take up to 7 notes before it's considered copyright infringement.

The song sucks ass anyway, who cares

Yeah, I hear the similarity. But I don't have the time to get enraged by country music. lol

Posted

Yeah I can hear the riff in the beginning but thats the only place I did hear it

But what about Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve? The Rolling Stones (or rather their management) sued them cos it sampled 'The Last Time' in terms of music, but the lyrics were different.

That's probably because it was the entire melody that they stole.

Or if they use samples (like actual tracks from other artists) in their songs they have to credit them, or else they get sued big time.

Who the fuck cares? I mean - does it degrade the quality of living for you or Green Day? No. Musicians have been ripping each other off for eternity and always will.

Heard Last Nite by The Strokes? Complete rip of American Girl by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Both bands are cool with that and it doesn't take anything from either song. So what? Seriously, find something else to get angry about like AIDs or The Government, Maaaaaaan.
