DeAmbassador Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 So, the header pretty much says it all. Well, she's younger than me...for 56 seconds. Didn't expect that, huh? And, she really likes J(or was it K?)Pop, Shinee and and those shitty boy bands. She already knows the "popular" shit (Holiday, BOBD, Longview etc.), but I have no idea of what to show to her. Should I take it chronologically(god that's a big word) or start with the more popular stuff and some more "representative" songs through the bands career?
Guest Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Definitely popular first. Start with American Idiot and 21stCB, and work backwards from there.
JIGD13 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Make her listen to the old songs first like go in a old to new order
Guest Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Make her listen to the old songs first like go in a old to new order Mate, if the first thing I'd ever heard from Green Day was 1000 Hours, I'd never have listened to them again.
JIGD13 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Mate, if the first thing I ever heard from Green Day was 1000 Hours, I'd never have listened to them again. I'm just saying that she has to listen to all the albums or at least the best songs in order
JackInABox86 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Mate, if the first thing I'd ever heard from Green Day was 1000 Hours, I'd never have listened to them again. Sooo true I only got into that album in the last few years haha
Malleus Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Why don't you just send her a link to the wiki article of their discography and be like "Pick some shit, listen to it." You don't have to hammer down guidelines.

Red Lights Flash Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Show her Bullet in a Bible. Then give her the fan favorites that aren't necessarily big radio hits (like X-Kid, Letterbomb, She, Burnout).
Malleus Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Because the songs she picks could be Nightlife, Tight Wad Hill, Christian's Inferno, and Dominated Love Slave Her listening to whatever songs she wants, even if they are not their best (even though all of those songs are enjoyable - especially Tight Wad Hill), is better than people trying to force their favourite albums down her throat.
Guest Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Start by giving her AI and Dookie, and telling her to listen to both and tell you which she liked more. Should be pretty easy to take it from there. Also, Dominated Love Slave is one of the greatest songs of all time. OF ALL TIME.
DeAmbassador Posted August 29, 2013 Author Posted August 29, 2013 Her listening to whatever songs she wants, even if they are not their best (even though all of those songs are enjoyable - especially Tight Wad Hill), is better than people trying to force their favourite albums down her throat. NOT Tight Wad Hill. The string of shitty songs after Jaded is(amongst other reasons) one of the reasons that Insomniac is BY FAR GD's worst album.

I'm glad that my brother wasn't such a douchebag when he introduced me to Green Day. Hopefully your sister has a cooler aunt or something she can discuss music with, haha.

Appreciate the gesture And my aunts listen to Frank Sinatra and Greek Folk music that's 150+ years old. So nope, I'm her only hope

Recommendations are always good, especially for an artist with as huge of a back catalogue as Green Day.
Malleus Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Recommendations are always good, especially for an artist with as huge of a back catalogue as Green Day. Yeah, they are. I just don't really see the point when he's said she's heard all of their popular stuff already. She's familiar with the band enough to try out things for herself and not get too much of a shock, you know? At least I think so anyway haha. And I'm just getting shitty vibes from this thread. Make her listen to this, she has to listen to X then Y, NO SHE CAN'T LISTEN TO THAT, THAT ALBUM FUCKING SUCKS etc.
casey1251 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 First I must say, what a wonderful dilemma to have, & second I'd say go with what represents The Band best. None of their singles are my favorites, don't get me wrong they are great, I just have other song's of theirs that own my heart, but I would say most of their singles are singles for good reasons. Be it simply due to the fact that they are a great composition, The Band feels strongly enough about them that they are comfortable standing behind them, letting them represent the band & album, or they have a clear genuine appeal across the mass's. If not that then maybe some of the more legendary fan favorites. Good luck & let us all now how it works!
Spike Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 The first thing I heard was Basket Case and it took me 5 more years to want to hear anything else... Start with American Idiot, then the good songs from 21st CB, then International Superhits.

Not her's, an if there's a thing that she's good at, is not trusting me. At all.
Guest Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 I'd say go with what represents The Band best. That's a toughie, though, as Green Day is something of a musical chameleon. The first three albums are very similar to each other, but after Dookie, their music changed slightly with every progressive album until you hit Warning, which, despite being natural evolution of their music, hardly sounds like the band that cranked out Kerplunk. Then you get to AI, which was a massive reset button, through 21CB, and into the Trilogy, which was also something of a reset button. It's really hard to pick individual songs that are representative of the band's entire career when they shifted and changed their musical style so often.

Make her listen to this, she has to listen to X then Y, NO SHE CAN'T LISTEN TO THAT, THAT ALBUM FUCKING SUCKS etc. I only suggested AI and Dookie because they're the band's two best-known albums, and good starting points as a result. There's nothing wrong with doing it a different way.
HolyHandGrenade Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Start with Dominated Love Slave and Blood Sex and Booze for shock value. Then Take Back and Fuck Time Really, I'd start with Good Riddance, since many people have no idea it's Green Day. From There, I'd do the singles from Dookie, AI, and 21CB. Those are probably the most easy to get into from her music tastes as a background. Along with that basis, I'd suggest Warning and Tre, which appeal to that as well (Warning, Castaway, Hold on, Missing You, 8th Ave. Serenade, etc...). From there, have her listen to those albums in full, and expand to the others.
