He wasn't giving any hints at all. In Argentina they speak Spanish and in Spanish "One, two, three, four" is "Uno, dos, tre, cuatro". He was just speaking the native language and that's all.

Yeah this. He'll often say something simple in Spanish if he's in a Spanish speaking country.

Also he said "Tres" (the real way to say the number in Spanish) not "Tre". Plus, he's explained how he came up with the album titles. He was sitting at home and just kind of jokingly thought that they should call them that, but then after asking his wife and the band what they thought, decided they should do it for real. This was when they'd already made the albums (or had almost finished making them), so that confirms that he hadn't already come up with the titles in advance. Does anyone know which interview it was where he explained coming up with the titles?

Is there any connection between Green Day and the spanish language? They could call it "One, Two, Tré" but they used the spanish version - Why?

Thay also used this language in 21st Century Breakdown -> iViva la gloria!

Because "One, Two, Tré" sounds fucking stupid.

OK, now I know why they always use the spanish language - english sounds "fucking stupid"

Yes, because when one combined Spanish and English phrase sounds fucking stupid, all of English suddenly becomes fucking stupid.

Jesus Christ.

I don't get what you mean. "Tré" is french.

And my question was, why they usw the spanish language - the album titles, the song name "iViva la gloria!",...

The connection between Green Day and Spanish is because California has a great Latin influence in it, what with it being one of the southern states. Unless of course there's some spanish heritage I'm not aware of.

That would also explain why they use Spanish titling.

As for ¡TRÉ!, the pun is obvious.

They used Spanish so they could make a joke with the titles. It should be "Uno Dos Tres", but instead they make it "Uno Dos......Tre!". It's a play on the words Tres and Tre.

For Viva La Gloria, I think one reason they did it was so they could have ! and ? at both ends of the titles, so that the difference between the two songs would be clear. And as for why they'd use Spanish instead of English for the titles and songs in general I think that's just being artistic, sometimes a phrase just sounds more interesting/cooler in Spanish.

And yeah as mentioned above Spanish is the second most spoken language where Green Day come from so out of all languages other than English that's the one they'd be most familiar with.

No. Would be "trois".

as far as I gather Tre Cool means "be cool", as in stay frosty :P

I think it's an urban GDC myth that Tre means "very" in French, but that's wrong

Tre's name is a mixture of two languages. He was given the nickname Tre by his family when he was little because he's Frank Edwin Wright the Third, and "tre" is Italian for three. Then later Larry Livermore added the Cool, making it sound like "tres cool", French for "very cool".

So the spelling's a bit funny, but it started out as Italian for three and turned into French for very cool.

«Tré» is not a french word. It just sounds a bit like the french word «très», which means a lot, many or much (depending of the sentence).

Nope, tré (très) means "very". It's just spelled wrong.

To be fair, I don't think anyone who's replied thinks Billie saying that has anything to do with the album titles :P

I know. I just thought it was an interesting coincidence.

Fair enough, you did call it first. Even though I don't think there's really a link it is actually quite amusing to hear him say the album titles like that.

google told me otherwise, but I won't nag about it.

That's just a weird glitch of google translate I guess, seeing as when I google translate "tre cool" from French to Dutch it also gives me "be cool" (literally, not something in Dutch), even though "tre" is not the verb "to be" in any way, shape or form. Google translate is crazy.

and when you translate it to Latin it says it's "he may be cool"

I have it in the July 2012 billboard magazine interview. He might have mentioned it somewhere else too but it's definitely in there :)
