Guest Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Not the biggest of things, but it's something to vote for Green Day in. They're represented with American Idiot, but there's huge competition. They're up against bands like Biffy Clyro, Slipknot, Mastodon, Paramore, White Stripes, Blink, Muse, Kings Of Leon, Avenged Sevenfold, Rage Against The Machine, and Foo Fighters, just to name a very few. Personally I don't think American Idiot is even near the best drum song on the list, but, y'know. Go nuts. http://www.musicradar.com/news/drums/whats-the-greatest-drum-beat-of-this-millennium-580292
green day is Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Why the fuck would they choose American idiot. That's not a question either, it's a statement.

Tubbie Head Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 I'm sorry but Seven Nation Army beats them all!
green day is Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Because it's probably their biggest song from the Noughties? Personally I'd have gone with Holiday. Please don't say Noughties [cringe] My first thought is JoS, but that probably doesn't really count as one drum beat. Know Your Enemy might count if it wasn't ripped right from Rebel Girl. There are a couple better than AI. Also it wasn't their biggest hit (at least not chart-wise), Boulevard was, followed by September and a couple others. AI only charted 61. The only one lower than it that charted is Oh Love. Unless I don't understand how Billboard's site works, of course. It's pretty confusing and very overwhelmingly designed.
inthehallwaynow Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 hmm hard time deciding.. i went with system of a down just for nostalgia reasons

JOS barely gets recognition outside of the GD fanbase, so thats out. KYE just gets the piss taken out of it, so thats out too. Boulevard has a great drum outro, and the opening to WMUWSE has a powerful beat, but it does get a bit dull. AI is aggressive and fast paced, with great fills. That's probably why they went for it.

I don't even know. Isn't there an American word for it? Something playing on millennium? Noughties just sounds so... naughty. Yeah, I understand why they chose it. There's just a lot of better choices.

Basket Case and Green Day's other 90's hits (even Good Riddance) didn't even chart of the Hot 100 (the chart you're referring to. Why? Because to chart, a song needed to be released as a commercial single, which Green Day never did with their songs. This resulted in things like Good Riddance not even charting even though they were massively popular and did chart on other less important charts. For reference, Green Day's AI singles were the first to chart because Billboard changed this rule and ALSO started including digital sales in chart positions. Unfortunately, they added the digital sales part a few months after American Idiot (the song) was released. In theory, AI song would have been a top 10 single too if its digital sales were included.

So what about airplay? I'm pretty sure Boulevard and September were more popular anyway. What is an accurate representation?
DookieLukie Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 So what about airplay? I'm pretty sure Boulevard and September were more popular anyway. What is an accurate representation? Billboard is so convoluted that there really is no accurate representation. The new Justin Timberlake song charted higher than Basket Case or AI, but whoch one will be remembered in 5 years? Even 1 year? Probably Basket Case and AI. Billboard is honestly a joke, tbh. Airplay is a good representation kind of, and most of Green Day's singles did very well in airplay but couldn't chart on the Hot 100. It's all relative. Timing and such. Songs that are remembered in the future would be your best bet. I know...it's weird.
DookieLukie Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Obvs. AI. Duh. Who even are the rest of those bands? MCR: Pretty big band back in 2007. You must know them. Coldplay: They're pretty big. Sounds like U2 The Killers: Pretty big band Foo Fighters: Really good band Shall I continue?

Blond-O-Sonic Shimmer Trap Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Brianstorm! Takes an octopus to play that one. The new Justin Timberlake song charted higher than Basket Case or AI, but whoch one will be remembered in 5 years? Even 1 year? Probably Basket Case and AI. Justin Timberlake is at the very least as important an artist to pop culture as Green Day.

WhiteTim Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Billboard does chart radio play Please stop talking about shit you have NO clue about...
DookieLukie Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Billboard does chart radio play Please stop talking about shit you have NO clue about... No one said it doesn't chart airplay... I'm asking if there's a different website, organization, etc. that's more accurate than billboard. Nah not really. Billboard does get airplay and download numbers from other websites though. They are tough to find though.
WhiteTim Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Nah not really. Billboard does get airplay and download numbers from other websites though. They are tough to find though. No they don't, they have their own system... But whatever what do I know....
DookieLukie Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 No they don't, they have their own system... But whatever what do I know.... Well I was just saying that Billboard employs "companies" that track airplay. Like Nielsen is Billboard's sales tracking method, and they are their own company.
fukingcounterstrike Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 This millennium doesn't have much to offer
