maurokanvaz Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 So, I was just listening to 21st Century Breakdown and I came up across the phrase "Class of 13". Not sure if it was ever discussed here. I'm afraid that this might mean they were going to retire this year. I do remember reading somewhere that BJ's son was part of the 2013 graduating class. I just want to get it clear in my head. So, what are y'all's thoughts?
IlariaIDIOT Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 "This is a reference to frontman Billie Joe Armstrong’s eldest son, Joseph Armstrong, who was born in 1995 and will be part of the graduating class of 2013"
Guest Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Well I graduate from Uni this year so the song must be about me!
Bernie Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I got kicked off high school last year, then made one more year in school this year and so I'm in the class of 13 too !!! I'll start to work this August
IlariaIDIOT Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I purposefully missed a year of school so that I could be in the class of '13 and have this song be about me, too. I could be in the class of 13 too but I have to go still to school
green day is Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Yes it is about the year they will retire, it was confirmed in an interview. Expect it any day now.
Maddy. Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Yeah Green Day are breaking up this year. They've been dropping hints about calling it quits in 2013 since Kerplunk. Just look at the lyrics and it's all there, man.

So, what are y'all's thoughts? Billie mentioned in an interview that the class of 13 reffered to the year "someone close to him" (Joey) was graduating, and also mentioned at the same time that "someone else close to him" (his wife, Adrienne) was born in 1969, hence the line "raised by the bastards of 1969"
Neon Light Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I always thought it was referring to the superstition that the number 13 is an unlucky number. So "we are the class of 13'" meaning we are the unfortunate generation to be born into this era, not having done anything to deserve it.
The Grouch is Tracy Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Well I graduate from Uni this year so the song must be about me! Aren't all the songs about you?
Liam Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Alright guys, no need to be dicks. He just asked a simple question. Next time feel free to ask a small question like this in our Q&A thread
